The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The dordogne area is one of the most popular destinations in France offering the holiday maker plenty of interesting things to do and see.
Brantôme is known as as the Venice of the Dordogne, the River Dronne encircling the small town, linked to the outside world by five bridges. Excellent restaurants. Lovely market on Fridays and in the summer always painting exhibitions in the Abbey. A fun place for children, too, with canoe hire. Its gabled belltower, rising from the rock, is held to be the oldest and one of the finest in France. The original Benedictine Abbey was founded in 769 by Charlemagne. The Abbey as it is today was rebuilt in the 18th Century and now houses a museum with prehistoric remains and a permanent exhibition of the mysterious trance paintings, engravings and drawings of the medium-cum-artist Fernand Desmoulin (1853-1914). In the summer it also shows the work of living artists, which are offered for sale.
Brantôme offers the family a lovely day out for there is something for everyone. You can explore the River Dronne in a hired canoe, or in a pedal-powered boat. There are numerous, cafés, bars and restaurants to suite all budgets, art galleries, arts and crafts shops, antique shops and a wonderful farmers' market every Tuesday and Friday in July and August. For budding artists some wonderful scenes to paint. It's not uncommon on lovely summer days to see people with their easels precariously placed along the river bank endeavouring to capture the moment.
Don't forget to visit St Jean de Côle en route there or coming back, one of the beautiful villages fo France.
BOURDEILLES
Continuing west from Brantome on the D78, following the Dronne, some 10kms away is Bourdeilles, on the banks of the Dronne with two castles side by side. Next to the feudal fortress is the superb 16th Century Renaissance palace, built and sumptuously furnished for Catherine de Medici, who never set foot inside it. Fortunately, the public can enjoy the fine collection of early Spanish, Dutch and Italian furniture and admire the décor in the lady's bedroom.
THE RIVER DRONNE CANOEING
The source of the 178 kilometre River Dronne is in the forest of Cars in the Haute Vienne. Part of it is tidal and salmon have now reappeared here. It flows through magnificent scenery, past Brantome and the caste of Bourdeilles. Canoe enthusiasts will find the Dronne, with its weirs more of a challenge than the Dordogne or the Vézère, which, in summer, are particularly suitable for beginners. Depending on your route, the canoe centre will deliver you by minibus to the start of the route, or come and pick you up at the finish.
Canoe hire at Brantome, Grand Brassac, St Front la Rivière, St Antoine Cumond, Bourdeilles, Ribérac and Aubeterre
The Perigueux / Sorges area
Sorges is the closest village to the property ,famous for its Truffles , visit the museum and walks around the Truffle groves. The Auberge de la Truffe is famous for its gourmet food.
St Jean de Cole is a 20 minute drive away known as one of the beau villages of France.
Many historic caves are within easy driving distance.
Postcard perfect
Périgueux was founded around 0 AD on a hill shaped by the curving River Isle. Its population of 35,000 have a reputation for their friendly natures and cheerfulness. You'd probably be the same too if you woke up to such a fantastic setting each morning! A lot of work has been invested by the city council into restoring the Mediaeval and Renaissance quarter, Puy St-Front, with its distinct white limestone buildings.
A market town
The town was originally inhabited by a Gaulish tribe called Petrocorri. It was the Romans, however, who claim the credit for developing the town into the department’s prosperous capital. Today it is still a major market town, although many people choose it as a more relaxing alternative to Toulouse. The market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays when people come from all over the region to display their goods and browse for the latest bargains. The local specialties are truffles and pies.
An extraordinary collection
The Roman part of the town is known as La Cite. Within this area you will find the Musee du Perigord with its extensive display of local findings. There are a number of fantastic frescoes, mosaics and jewellery items on display but it's most impressive possessions are the alter dating from 2 BC and the three skeletons, which are ranked among the oldest ever found.
A towering cathedral
Périgueux is the proud owner of the largest cathedral in southwestern France. The Romanesque Cathedrale St-Front was only completed in the 19th Century when the architect Paul Abadie oversaw the restoration and embellishment of the building.
The shopping quarter
Around the cathedral you will find a number of winding lanes from the 15th and 16th Centuries. Follow them down to the pedestrianised Rue Limogeanne and you will find where the locals have been doing most of their shopping since the Middle Ages.

This was our third visit to La Petite Maison. Each visit has been fabulously relaxing. Each time we arrive we find we like it more than the last. Glenn and Roma are always welcoming and friendly and each year make improvements to the gite. We spend our days getting up late, fetching the french bread, eating, drinking wine and swimming in the pool (which is virtually our own). There is plenty to do in the area and lots of lovely walks through the woods by the gite. The children enjoy the badminton and collecting the wood for the bbq. We head home relaxed and ready to face 50 weeks until the next time! We make our journey part of the holiday and take two days to travel down, stopping at Orleans on the outward journey and an hour or so from Calais on the homeward. We drive along the Seine through Paris with fab views of the Eiffel Tower. We all look back with fond memories of our idylic holiday in heaven. |

The gite is lovely and well equipped. The owners of the gite live on site and are welcoming, informative and friendly. The pool was a particular source of enjoyment and was always readily available for our use. The gite is in very rural, typically French, countryside which is peaceful and picturesque. The City of Perigueux is fairly close and is a beautiful city with both an old quarter and a modern shopping area. If you like peace and quiet but with access to some beautiful rural towns and villages, then this is the place for you. Response: Thank you for your lovely comments, it was nice meeting you and hope to see you again in the future. |
