About the home
La Cuisine d’Alice is a gracious one-bedroom house on the grounds of the French country estate known as Le Maine. Newly restored in the most pure Périgord tradition, this very spacious home has kept, in addition to impressive vaulted ceilings and exposed beams, its carved stone sink and its large original fireplace.
From the garden, a few steps take you into inside the house. The beautiful limestone walls, the softly colored limewash tones, and the natural materials make for a unique and inviting atmosphere. In winter, the heated floor warms the room and makes it cozy.
La Cuisine d’Alice boasts an open-plan layout. In the main living space, there is a sitting room with a comfortable leather sofa in front of the fireplace, and a dining area to enjoy your meals. The modern kitchen is complete with high-end appliances.
The bedroom is a few steps up from the living space. The openness of this room allows you to see the fireplace from the bed, making it the most romantic getaway for couples. All bed and bedding and linens are new and of the highest quality. The ensuite bathroom has a heated towel rack so you can enjoy warm towels after your shower or bath.
The living space has windows overlooking the private garden, where dining furniture and lounge chairs invite you to sit in the sun or spend wonderful evenings al fresco.
We, Catherine and Maxence, live permanently on site and are more than happy to welcome you to Le Maine Manor House, our family home for four generations.
Discover another Dordogne than the one on the holiday brochures. Our passion and local knowledge will allow you an intimate, authentic and unforgettable taste of the real Périgord.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Aquitaine region in the South West of France is one the most beautiful areas of the country and has much to offer visitors: unspoiled scenery, important architectural heritage, Bordeaux wines, an agreeable climate all-year-round, and it is a renowned gastronomic paradise.
The jewel of the Aquitaine is the Dordogne region of which the name itself evokes a way of life and an authenticity that has disappeared elsewhere, but remains true here. Although it has been inhabited since prehistoric times, its numerous valleys, dramatic cliffs and high limestone plateaus covered in dense oak forests have made it historically difficult to access the area, thus explaining why the region has changed very little and speaks of stories long since passed.
After Paris area, the Dordogne has the most historical monuments. At each turn of the road, you will be amazed by romantic landscapes offering views of small medieval villages, castles, fortresses perched on hilltops, and cliffs inhabited from prehistoric times. Not visible from the roads, but also noteworthy, are the caves covered in paintings dating back 17,000 years.
There is magic in the air throughout the region, but there are certain places that should not be missed while visiting Perigord. The medieval town of Sarlat has a very unique historic city center from the 15th century. The valley of the Dordogne River meanders peaceably below castles, seeming to not have moved for centuries. This valley is known for the fortress of Beynac, which has served as the backdrop for several films, the castle of Castelnaud; the village of La Roque-Gageac where the houses are built into the cliffs, and Domme, a “bastide royale” town of the 13th century.
The Valley of the Vézère River, also called the Valley of Prehistory, offers the original caves of Font de Gaume and Les Combarelles, in addition to the most famous painted cave of Lascaux, and the Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies. Also nearby are the cliffs of La Roque Saint Christophe which were inhabited until the end of the Middle Ages. Many castles are open to the public like Hautefort, which dominates in the middle of French formal gardens, one of the most beautiful in the Aquitaine region. The tour of the geological cave of Tourtoirac is an extraordinary visit to an unusual area which was formed by an underground river. Brantôme, named the green Venice of Périgord, is a city with Medieval and Renaissance influences, especially known for its abbey and an angled bridge of the 15th century.
The Perigueux / Cubjac area
Le Maine benefits from its unique location in the center of the Dordogne region, close to Sarlat and any major attraction the area has to offer, whilst being in the peaceful countryside, away from the crowds, a little off the beaten track. Guests really appreciate coming back to the peace and quiet of Le Maine after a day’s visit around Brantome, Sarlat and along the Dordogne Valley. After the buzz and activity of the major sites, the tranquillity of this traditional corner of the Périgord is invaluable. From Le Maine you can walk or go bike riding amidst the surrounding countryside and villages. The Auvézère river, which runs through Cubjac, is perfect for canoe rides. Nearby, children will love tree walking and aqua parks.
Le Maine is located at the edge of the tiny village of Cubjac. You are a short walk away from the center of this typical Dordogne village which features a picturesque stone bridge and old houses. Here you will find a bakery, a butcher shop, a small grocery store, a post office and a pharmacy. There is also a café with outdoor seating and a pizzeria. On Fridays, there is a farmer’s market with local produce, cheese, and more.
Perigueux, the vibrant capital of Perigord, only 20 km from Le Maine, is a city rich in art and history with much to see: a Roman villa housed by the magnificent museum designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, a medieval renaissance city center filled with narrow, cobbled streets, Romanesque churches and a byzantine-style cathedral which hosts a twice-weekly market with local products in its square.
Retaining its gastronomic traditions, this city offers a number of refined restaurants and wintners. In winter, the very special foie gras and truffles markets add excitement to the peaceful city. Some local producers are happy to invite you to hunt for truffles with them in their truffle fields. At any season, you can take advantage of a dedicated cooking class in a new and unique kitchen/restaurant, the only one of its kind in Perigord.

Guestbook for La Cuisine d'Alice au Maine
"Our stay in "la cuisine d' Alice" could not have been more perfect. From Catherine & Maxence's warm, friendly welcome to the luxurious towels and linens to the high speed wireless internet to the completely upscale kitchen -- everything was done perfectly to make our stay memorable. Maxence's "magic maps' guided us to interesting & beautiful Dordogne sights and Catherine's freshly picked heirloom tomatoes added the right touch to picnics in our private garden. Our expectations were exceeded and we will return!" Judith & Lawrence G. (Oakland, CA, USA) Sep. 6-12, 2011
This was our second and definitely not our last visit to Le Maine. (…) For us Le Maine really does tick all the boxes and we would strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for somewhere which really is a cut above the rest.
Caroline S. (London, UK) Aug. 20-Sep. 5, 2011
Kati H. & Holger B. (Deutschland) May 22- Jun. 3, 2011
The location is brilliant, within easy reach of all the fabulous Dordogne attractions, from the Lascaux and Les Eyzies cave paintings to the museums and markets at Perigueux and the charm of Sarlat. I can't speak highly enough of the Le Maine accommodations. Were were fortunate to make friends with the other guests and were able to inspect all three properties, and would recommend them all very highly. Catherine and Maxence are exemplary hosts - nothing is too much trouble for them. They are dedicated to the house and its grounds and can tell you everything about the locality. Both speak excellent English. They can organise a private cooking class, will take you to where you can get the best foie gras and show you local routes so you can avoid the autoroutes. Their charm and attention to detail make this a wonderful place to stay. Anne & Tom C. (Tasmania, Australia) Oct. 16-30, 2010
"Our four night stay in "la Cuisine d'Alice" was the highlight of our 23-day trip to Europe. Catherine and Maxence have created a "picture-postcard" setting full of French country charm. The property is stunning, and our accommodations could have easily been from the pages of architectural digest. The gardens were lovely, and the setting tranquil. Maxence and Catherine were extremely helpful, offering terrific sight-seeing and restaurant advice. They have obviously invested a significant amount of their love, time and energy in ensuring their guests have the best possible experience while staying on their lovely estate. The location is perfect for visiting the beautiful Dordogne-area highlights, including the Lasceax Caves, the Hauteford Chateau, the UNESCO heritage Sarlat market, the cliff-side village of Rocamadour, and roman ruins in Perigueux. It's the perfect location to enjoy the entire Perigord region, with it's winding roads, pastoral views and rolling hills. The village of Cubjac (a few minutes by foot) is charming and welcoming with an excellent bakery, and a terrific pizza restaurant. (…) I would highly recommend a stay at this wonderfully charming location, if only to meet Zebulon (the mule) and Rothschild (the sheep). My only regret -- we should have stayed longer than four nights." Trish C. (Ottawa, Canada) Sep. 9-13, 2010
