Le Cottage
£600–£1000 / week
About the home
“Le Cottage” was originally the farm workers house and has been beautifully restored to a high standard. The property is set in about 9 acres of mainly pasture land, it is no longer a working farm, though we have an Arabian mare and a donkey which may, or not, be here depending in which field they are in.
The garden is fully landscaped with a wealth of roses and flowering bushes. The property looks towards a beautiful unspoilt valley and faces south west. “Le Cottage” overlooks lawns leading down to the swimming pool and has a lovely view. The swimming pool has an automatic alarm in accordance to French law.
It is an ideal spot to "chill out" and recover from the mad world of work, there are many green/white lanes for walking or cycling, lot's of rare birds and we see deer on a regular basis.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Charente is a beautiful unspoilt area of France, unlike the Dordogne which has become so "English"! The landscape is varied and there are many splendid views. The countryside is rolling hills which are sometimes described as the "French Tuscany". The climate is generally very temperate, never too hot, never too cold, in summer I'd say the average is around 25°C, though sometimes reaching well over 30°C.
Angouleme is our nearest city, sat on top of what is called locally, “le balcon de l’Aquitaine” the balcony of the Aquitaine, it enjoys 360° views for miles around. It has been inhabited since at least the year 600, the Cathedral has an incredible carved façade, the ramparts go round most of the old quarters. It has a multitude of restaurants of every style, taste and price, a typical local custom is to go into town early, wander around looking at the terraces and choosing your restaurant on a whim! The old quarters show some fine examples of Renaissance buildings, wall art, trompe l’oeil, museums, chic boutiques and book shops.
Angouleme is famous for its' festivals which start in January with the cartoon/comic strip festival, the “Musique Metisses” in May, the "Fête de Musique" on the 21st JUne, the classic car race and rallye, “le Circuit des Remparts” in September and the piano festival, “Piano en Valois” in October just to mention a few…
It is a lively, innovative and still very French town! (Unlike places like Perigueux or Sarlat where you could be in the UK, judging on the amount of British nationals there!)
The Perignac area
Verine is 1.5 kms. from Perignac, which is a tiny village of around 500 people, in Pérignac there is a beautiful Roman style church dating back to the 12th. Century. A village hall, tennis court (free to use) and lots of charm, peace and quiet. It is situated on the top of a hill, 160m altitude, with beautiful views all around.
Blanzac is our nearest town at 6 kms, in Blanzac there are two supermarkets, a bank, post office, two restaurants, two or three bars, a medical centre with 4 doctors, nurses and a dentist. Also three “boulangeries”, (bread shops), a flower shop etc. The church is a fine example of the Roman style churches in this area. Blanzac is very pretty and unspoilt, it has a tiny market on Saturday mornings and on Sundays the oyster man comes and sells the oysters from Marennes.
Montmoreau is at 12 kms. it is slightly bigger than Blanzac, there are more restaurants and the Wednesday morning market is much bigger than the one at Blanzac.
Aubeterre is 20 mins south of Pérignac and is officially classed as one of the most beautiful villages of France! It is a great place to visit, for its beach on the river Dronne, (tennis, boules, canoeing etc.), lovely restaurants, Hostellerie du Périgord & Alba Terra are just two of them. The unique monolithic church, which both children & adults alike enjoy. The carved facade on the Eglise St Jacques and the delightful winding alleys in the village which is scrambling down a white chalk cliff to the river Dronne in the valley.
