Home description
The classic Napoleon III Chateau Le Castelet is set in four acres of parkland just outside the cathedral city of Coutances and is ideally placed to visit all of Normandy’s top tourist sights, including Mont St Michel, the D-Day beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry.
The beautiful Le Castelet has six luxurious bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms or shower rooms. Downstairs there is a huge entertaining room (over 76 square metres) with a stunning white baby grand piano. There French windows opening onto a sun drenched terrace. There is also a large kitchen, library with UK tv and a laundry room.
The chateau can be rented on a self catering basis or on a B&B basis with daily cleaning. Whichever option you choose, we can arrange superb dinners, suppers, lunches and picnics each day. It is the ideal venue for celebrations, family get togethers or small business conferences.
The chateau is just over an hour from the ferry ports of Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo. Alternatively, you can fly to Dinard from Stansted, Bristol or East Midlands. By train it is 3 hours from Paris.
The chateau is just 20 minutes from deserted beaches with beautiful sand dunes. There are also stunning golf courses and horse riding nearby. Plus the chateau has two pet llamas that you can take for walks!

The Normandy / Manche region
Recommended: Bayeaux with its 1066 tapestry and cathedral; the stunning abbey at Mont St Michel; the D-Day Beaches, are the key highlights of a Normandy visit. You can also go on gastronomic tours taking in cider and calvados farms, a snail farm, a bee keeping farm, a fois gras farm, and a cheese factory. There are numerous chateaux, castles and gardens. Beaches are deserted and offer panoramic views.
- The D-Day beaches (You need at least a day to do them properly, including taking in some museums and exhibitions). - Mont Saint Michel. - Bayeux (for the tapestry and the medieval town). - Caen (for excellent shopping and museums). - Visit our local beaches (huge and sandy, and always empty). - Granville (our local seaside resort, pretty and very lively with a medieval fortified old town to explore). - The cathedral and botanical gardens in Coutances (with lights and music on summer evenings).
Periers / Coutances area
Markets: The following local towns all have weekly markets. - Monday: Carentan. - Tuesday: Saint Lô (much smaller than Saturday), Villedieu-les-poèles. - Thursday: Coutances (down the hill behind the cathederal). - Friday: Vire. - Saturday: Saint Lo (biggest local market – head up the ramparts), Avranches, Bayeaux, Granville. - Sunday: Hauteville-sur-mer (head through the town to Hautville Plage).
Both Coutances and Saint Lô have large and very helpful tourist offices, and there is also a small office in our neighbouring village of Cerisy-la-Salle. The tourist office in Coutances is behind the Hotel de Ville, opposite the cathedral. The tourist office in Saint Lô is in the town centre in Place Charles de Gaulle (under the bizarre metal viewing tower construction). The tourist office in Cerisy-la-Salle is in the Maison Cantonal, across the road from the main square and opposite the Post Office (opening times are limited in the Cerisy office).

The library has a large TV with satellite connection, DVD, and video. There are a wide range of books, DVDs and videos and Internet access is also available. The kitchen/breakfast room spans the width of the house. The kitchen includes a huge range which uses gas and electricity; there is also a large wood burning oven and hot plate. In additon there is a small electric oven and a microwave. Other appliances include a fridge, freezer, and dishwasher. In the laundry room there is a washer, dryer, and an American style fridge/freezer with an ice maker. There is also a cloakroom with a WC just off the hallway.
First floor: On the first floor there are four bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities. All rooms are individually furnished with antiques and are of luxury hotel standard. The Napoleon is a large double room with a sofa and very large en-suite bathroom. There is a bath in the centre of the room from where one can admire the great views over the garden. The Josephine room is a yellow silk-lined room with twin beds (120cm and 90cm) and an en-suite shower room. The Marie Antoinette room is a large double with an elaborately draped bed and silk sofa. There is a bathroom with a shower over the bath. The Louis room is a beautiful green silk-lined room with an Empire-style double bed and an en-suite shower room.
Second floor: The second floor has two bedrooms with en-suite facilities. The Joan of Arc room is perfect for families - there is a double bed and a single bed with room for a fold up bed or cot. It has a sofa, study area, and large shower room. The Dauphin room has a draped, half tester king sized bed. There is a claw foot bath in front of the window with great views over the garden. There is also an en-suite toilet and wash basin.
Further details outdoors: Le Castelet is set in four acres of parkland filled with trees that were planted at the same time as the house was built, in 1870. Many of the trees are evergreens of differing colours, giving a lovely backdrop at any time of the year. The grounds are surrounded by 30 foot laurel hedges, giving great privacy. There are two double gated entrances which allow you to drive in one and out of the other. There is also parking for dozens of cars, even more in summer when grassed areas can be used. In summer one can enjoy the 4.5metre splash pool available for use, cook on the barbeque, and relax on the deck chairs and around the seating/dining areas dotted around the grounds. There are also three swings in different parts of the garden.
