The Normandy / Manche region
While the Old Bakery at La Clergerie is set in a quiet and rural position it is close to many amenities, including riding stables, golf courses and sailing schools. The region while offering a fine range of facilities for the discerning traveller, is relatively unexplored. Even in August the roads and beaches are relatively free of traffic with no difficulty in finding parking- which is mostly free. with parking close to beches. Yet nearby are some of the finest and cleanest beaches beaches in North-West Europe, with easy access from Ireland, the UK and Paris. On the sand dune lined coast to the west are a number of pretty seaside resorts, unspoilt and typically French, including the family resort at Agon-Coutainville, the cosmopolitan resort of Granville, and the fortified seaport of St Malo to the south, as well as the holy pilgrim island of Mont. St Michel.
A short trip to the east (30 mins by road) takes you to the famous D.Day landing beaches and museums. here you will find Idaho, Omaha and Sword beaches, and ithe town of St. Mere Eglise, where Tom Hanks carried out research for the film ,Saving Private Ryan and the TV series, Band of Brothers. The moving and beautiful US military cemetry at Colville-sur-Mer is not to be missed and the Peace Memorial Exhibition at Caen provides stunning insight into the events surrounding two world wars.
William the Conqueror was born in this region and his birthplace can be visited at Falaise, as well as the Bayeaux Tapestry which chronicles the invasion of England in 1066. There are a number of chateaux and abbeys to be visited, including the Abbey at Hambye in the pretty Vire Valley, and nearby, the Ville de Poele (the town of copper pots) , whose foundries produced many of the church bells still heard throughout France today.
Periers / Coutances area
Coutances is a tradional market town with a magnificent cathedral - built at th time of William the Conqueror though remaining unfinished until the 13th century. Designed by the architect responsible for Notre Dame in Paris, it contains many beautiful stain glass windows and is accessible in the very centre of the town. Coutances has a market on Thursdays - but each day in the region there are markets to choose from. Coutances has boutiques, pavement cafes and bars where you can sit and soak up the atmosphere, or sample local dishes, with the addition of a wide choice of seafood restaurants along the coast in July and August .
Nearby Blainville-sur-Mer provides some of the highest grade oysters in Europe, which can be bought cheaply in the markets, and it is possible to walk out to see the oyster beds at low tide.
In May ,Coutances hosts the Jazz Festival which includes many free events, The Jardin de Plantes has magnificent bedding displays in summer, open in July and August for moonlight walks. and there is an International Artists Festival in July. A typical market town, you can sample French culture from the pavement cafes and bars, or visit the boutiques and patisseries. Coutances is well equipped with supermarkets and banks.
Alternatively, these can also be found in Periers. From Periers to nearby Lessay, the abbeyhere hosts classical musicconcerts throughout the summer, with the famous Horse Fair in September, which sows everything equestrian as well as country arts and crafts.

On entering Periers you come across another roundabout with Champion supermarket on your right ( a good place to stock up groceries), cross the roundabout and a few hundred metres further on turn left at the first set of lights - this takes you on to the D900 towards St. Lo. After 7kms, you will find a right turn (D57) signed for Feugeres and Le Mesnilbus.Go through Feugeres (villahe shop and recycling point is here) and after about 1.5kms the road rises up a hill and La Clergerie is marked to the left, and is also signed for the Champs-Benoit Cider FarmTurn left here and the lane takes you through the Champs-Benoit cider farm and this takes you eventually into the little hamlet of La Clergerie (signposted) 500 metres further on. Your accommodation is the second house on the left and you can pak in the courtyard in front of the house.
