The Normandy / Manche region

The Marias National Park is a designated are of outstanding natural beauty on the Cotentin Peninsular of Manche. To the west you will find sand dune lined safe family beaches that stretch for more than a hundred kms between Mont St Michel and Cherbourg. The area is steeped in histo , being the home of William the Conquerer who defeated the English and took the throne in 1066His birthplace is at Falaise (one hour by car) , and the Bayeaux Tapestry Museum ( 40 minutes by car) still has the original tapesty telling his storuy.
.
To the East are the famous D-Day landing beaches - Utah, Omaha and Sword beach (35 minutes by car) - where US, Canadian and British soldiers and airmen fought bravely against incredible odds to free Normandy in 1944. Travellers around the region will note that each village celebrates D-Day on its own special day according to when it was liberated. The tranquil beauty of the US , military cemetry at Colville-sur-Mer should not be missed. Travelling north through Grand-Camp-Maisy and the recently disovered defence battery, the N13 (20 minutes by car from La Clergerie) leads to St Mere-Eglise where US paratroopers famously engaged in the first battle on D-Day, and where Tom Hanks based himself at the local museum for researching his part in "Saving Private Ryan", and the TV series "Band of Brothers".

Following the salt marshes to the East of La Clergerie are a number of pretty andunspoilt traditional French beach resorts, with seafood restaurants, bars and traditional French markets throught the week. The estuary at Agon point, near Agon-Coutainville is home to hundreds of skylarks nesting in the dunes in early summer. The area is also responsible for a lrge proportion of France's oyster farming and the beds can be visited at low tide on foot.

To the South is the more cosmopolitan resort of Granville and the grandeur of the holy pilgrim island of Mont St. Michel. Film fans can visit the renowned American Film Festival at Deauville in the late summer and brush shoulders with the likes of Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, just a few hours drive away.

Periers / Coutances area

Coutances is a traditional French market town perched on a hill , overlooking the Marais to one side and the beautiful east coast on the other. The beautiful Cathedral which began construction as William the Conqueror invaded Britain and was completed two centuries later, was designed by the same architect responsible for Notre Dame . it boasts someof the most spectacular stain glasses windows you will find.

Known as the Town of the Chimneys there are many original quaint listed stone town houses . With its boutiques, patisseries, bars, restaurants and coffee shops, and the Jardin de Plantes' spectacular summer bedding open in July and August for romatic moonlight walks, there is always plenty to do. The town hosts several festivals each year, including a Jazz festival in May and Festival of Art July and August - when artists take to the streets to paint and draw and hold their annual exhibitions. Local abbeys, chateaux and great churches in the locality hold music concerts throughout the summer for a few euros entrance, and travelling musicians can be found giigging in bars and restaurants along the coast throughout the summer.

Coutances holds its market on Thursdays. Parking is easy in the town centre and free for short stays, though parking passes can be purchased from local shops for longer stays for a very small charge. Nearby Periers hold its Saturdays as does St. Lo and Pirou on Sundays, where people can buy spit roasted legs of lamb to take home for lunch.

Turning here and round the outskirts of the town, you cross several roundabouts until you come to the cattle market (Merchesieux de Bestaux). Here take the route for Periers- some 18kms on. You will come to a large roundabout on the outskirts of Periers with the C hampion supermarket to the right - a good stopping point for petrol or groceries. Cross the roundabout and a few hundred metres further on you come to a set of traffic lights. Turn right here, on to the D900 marked for St. Lo. 7kms down this road Feugers and Le Mesnilbus (D57) will be marked on the right. Turn here and pass through Feugeres where there is a village shop and local recycling point. La Clergerie is situated in two acres of land which leads into wooded pastures and orchards. The land is bordered by a stream with its own small cascade and is a haven for wildlife, including birds of prey, heron and a wide variety of garden birds. Picnics can be taken on the lawned bank of the stream which is covered in daffodils in spring, or on the sundeck. An early supper can be eaten by one of the two landscaped ponds. where House Martins swoop to gather their supper or dragon flies settled for the night. There is an orchard and a large area of lawn for children to play, but we do ask our guests to supervise children at all times because of the proximity of water, which it is not possible to fence.

La Clergerie is also known for its beautiful night skies, free from residual background light, which makes it ideal for keen astronomers or just a bit of romantic star gazing. Our local astronomy would be happy to led you through the skies on request for a small fee.
