Home description
Casita Amarilla is one of 6 casitas constructed by us, but keeping to the typical mountain hamlet style. Built on a hillside, from the track through the village 3 casitas are visible as 3 little street houses, but down the hill and beneath them there are another 3. So viewed from the gardens and pool one sees 6 casitas each with south facing terraces.
This area is one in which you can forget your problems and sink into another life-style, enjoying, the sun, the pool, the bar, easy strolling, more strenuous walking, climbing and horse riding through the countryside of olive and almond groves.
Should you want to venture further afield we are surrounded by white washed villages, towns with their weekly markets etc. and larger towns with castles, bullrings, churches and fortresses. All worth exploring. Not forgetting of course a couple of the most beautiful buildings ever to be seen, the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque/Cathedral in Cordoba.

The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
It would be unusual to spend more than a day or two here, even in the winter, without having some glorious sunshine. At 850metres it can be cold in the winter months but nevertheless clear skies and sun make it heavenly all year round.
Spring weather temperature are about 60-75 degrees 15 - 23 Celsius; summer between 23 - 38celsius. (95 degrees).
El Canuelo is a terrific area for strolling, trekking, climbing and horse riding through rural Spain, olive and almond groves and peaceful countryside.
Even if bird watching is not your fancy you'll be intrigued by the different birds you'll see here. Eagles, Hoopoes, Chough, Nightingales and endless others including plethoras of Swallows and Bee eaters.
Periana / El Canuelo area
One of life's great pleasures surely is eating and we are fortunate in El Canuelo to have a very good Bar/Restaurant serving coffee's, light snacks or lunches and if wanted long leisurely dinners by candle, moon and starlight. the two small towns, both 3 kms away have a variety of bars serving food.
Periana feast and fiesta days are:
Fiesta of Green Olives with tasting of typical mill breakfast 23rd March Fiesta of San Isidro & Flamenco Festival 14th - 16th May Peach Fair with various tasting of local food 22nd-24th August
El Canuelo has the benefit of having cultural activities not too far away and holiday type activities close at hand. Velez Malaga (20 mins) has an aqua park, Torre del Mar has a very long beach with nice beach bars for lunch. You can rent pedalos, wave riders, shade and sunbeds.
Further along the coast at Nerja (40mins) you' ll find Nerja Caves, which are one of the most important Prehistoric archaeological sites on the western Mediterranean. Dating back some five million years, they are notable for the large chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, and the immense length, over 4,000 metres. Well worth a visit. Beyond Nerja by another 10kms or so there are some lovely Cornish type coves, one a beach called El Canuelo, with a couple of nice beach bars.
Going towards Malaga you can visit, the port, the cathedral the old part of the town with its lovely buildings, see the Picasso museum, visit the fortress and look down over the fabulous panorama of Malaga city, seeing the port and the bullring spread out below you. A bit further south-west beyond Malaga there is a very good Zoo called Selwo Aventura occupying over 100 hectares of land on mountainous terrain near Estepona. It's part Zoo, part Safari Park and part Adventure Park. Still further South West in Algeciras or Tarifa you can join a boat trip to go whale and dolphin watching on the stretch of sea between Spain and Africa.
How to get there
Fly to Malaga or Granada airports, both are about an hour and quarter drive from El Canuelo. A bit further away, at about 3 hours' drive you could fly to Seville or Jerez or Gibraltar
Easyjet, Monarch,Thomsonfly, Ryanair, BA and Iberia all fly regularly into Malaga airport.
Ryanair flies to Granada from Birmingham, East Midlands, Liverpool and Stansted.
Ryanair flies to Seville from Stansted and Liverpool and to Jerez from Stansted.

Further details indoors: Our houses are all finished to the same high standard. We've kept the outsides white or yellow and the interior walls white and all floors tiled in a variation of terracotta tiles bought from the makers in Velez Malaga river bed area, where you can see the whole process, from the mixing of the various soils to making the shapes in their moulds to the drying and then baking.
We've used local Granada tiles in the bathroom and Granada glass shades on our wall lights. There is also quite a strong Moorish influence which one sees everywhere in the architecture of Southern Spain and we have used artefacts brought over from family trips to Morocco to add a further Moorish touch.
Further details outdoors: The main part of the swimming pool is 2 metres deep and 7 metres wide, It's shaped like a Micky Mouse head with each ear being separated from the main head by underwater arches. One ear is a metre deep and the other is just 20-25cms.
Bar El Canuelo has a pool table, and a sauna. There is a 'games room' with a table tennis table. The gardens and pool areas have plenty of shaded places to lie, children see-saw and swing seat. The terrace faces the gardens and so you can keep an eye on your children from your terrace.
Parking is about 30 steps away!
