Home description

Los Parrales is a comfortable, spacious spanish style farmhouse/finca approximately 5 kms from the pretty hillside village of Periana, famous for its peaches and olive oil. The house is ideal for families or a getaway with friends, with plenty in the surrounding area to see and do. Quiet and peaceful, but not isolated, in a small hamlet of 6-10 houses around about, yet still less than 30 mins drive from hustle and bustle of the coast.
Laze by the pool with a good book, get inspired by the spectacular views, take a stroll round the tranquil countryside, or chill out in the evening with 'al fresco' dining. A true home from home, but with better weather. This house lends itself perfectly to experience a taste of the real Spain and to relax and recover from the stresses of everyday life!

The Costa del Sol/Malaga region

After a short drive east of Malaga you arrive in the region of the 'Axarquia'. Here you will discover the 'real Spain' a scenery of gentle, hilly countryside dotted with traditional white mountainside villages that have managed to preserve their culture and traditions. The region enjoys a tropical climate, one of the warmest climates in all Europe - the temperature rarely drops below 10º C, even in January - you can be swimming in early spring and late autumn, and sitting or walking under marvellously clear blue skies during 320 days of the year. In summer the climate is pure Mediterranean.

To experience a taste of the Costa del Sol a leisurely drive takes us to the seaside resorts of Torre del Mar and Nerja. Here you can enjoy sand, sea and sun, Torre del Mar's Aquapark, jetskiing or go-karting, and beach restaurants, perhaps some nightlife, before returning to the comfort of a house in peaceful, unspoiled countryside.


Periana area

Periana is situated about 45 kilometres from Malaga and 25 kilometres from the coast at Torre del Mar, at an altitude of 547 metres. It lies within the region of Andalucia called the Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Olive Oil and Mountains, and has a population of around 5,000.

Periana is a pretty village with stunning all round views. To the north there are fabulous mountain ranges whilst to the south there is Lake Vinuela and the coastline. The streets are steep and sometimes narrow in Moorish style, although the town was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1884. It has several supermarkets, banks with cash points, bars & restaurants (with fabulous food) chemist, town hall with small tourist office and everything necessary to a rural community.

Peaches are the main crop of the region and are said to be the best in Spain. A Peach Fair is held in Periana every summer, one of a series of fiestas and festivals held throughout Axarquia. Olive oil is another product for which Periana is reknowned.

Within easy walking distance of the house at Banos de Vilo, there are sulphurous Moorish baths. These continued to be used for their medicinal waters until the 19th century and have recently been restored. Take a towel and have a dip in the baths, you really will notice the difference on your skin!
From here you can walk to another very pretty spot, the source of the Rio Guaro which feeds Lake Vinuela.

*** Lake Vinuela ***

This magnificent lake lies In the heart of some of Andalucia's most spectacular scenery. It's only a short 20 minute drive down the mountain - why not take a picnic and enjoy the views and wildlife. Take a walk, or try canoeing, sailing, fishing or windsurfing. There are also picnic areas and barbecues with fantastic views all around. The stunning 'Hotel La Vinuela' overlooks the serene lake and provides an excellent range of traditional dishes.

*** Golf ***

If you enjoy a game of golf there are two excellent 18 hole courses on the coast nearby.
* Baviera Golf: Situated in Caleta de Velez with magnificent views to the sea and mountains, this course has
been designed for all types of player.
* Anoreta Golf: Opened 15 years ago, a mature golf course, For all types of player, its attraction is water
obstacles.


*** AquaVelis ***

For a great family fun day out wny not visit Aquavelis - the largest waterpark in the Axarquia region and located opposite the El Ingenio shopping mall in Torre del Mar, approx. 25 mins away. Great rides and pools for all ages, never overly crowded, even at the height of summer.

**** Torre del Mar ***

The main coastal resort. This bustling seaside resort has great beaches and a beautiful 5km long promenade. It is famous for its fish restaurants, where locally caught fish is cooked on barbecues on the beach. This is a very popular summer resort with spanish families and during the summer season there are activities on the beach during the day, evening entertainment and a night market.

*** Caleta de Velez Marina ***

At the quieter end of Torre del Mar you will find the marina - Caleta de Velez. Locally caught fish is landed here and there are good fish restaurants here too, still good value for money for both food and wine. Be adventurous and try the local delicacies!

*** Nerja ***

A little further along the coast is the famous resort Nerja with its picturesque 'mirador' Balcon de Europa.
Nerja, once a small fishing village has now expanded but still manages to retain a village feel, particularly in the old town. There are great cove-shaped beaches with beautifully clear water. Stroll along the Balcon de Europa and take in the fantastic views!

*** Caves at Nerja ***

Three kilometres from Nerja are the famous 'Caves' These are breathtaking beautiful, some of the best in Europe. Each July a festival of flamenco music and dance is held inside the caves.

*** Frigiliana ***

Just a few minutes inland from Nerja, one of the most picturesque white hillside villages in the region. Lovely to stroll around, have a drink of the local moscatel wine in one of its many bars, and admire the handy work of local craftsmen.

*** Velez-Malaga ***
Known locally just as Velez, is situated just 1 kilometre inland from Torre del Mar on the scenic Route of Sun and Avocado. It is the centre and capital of the district of Axarquia. Despite it's proximity to the coast it has not developed a commercial tourist industry and is a great town to stroll around and admire much of its recently restored architecture and old palaces. There is also a new tram link from here to the coast at Torre del mar!

The house is accessed directly from a main road. There is parking within the gates for 2/3 cars.

* The kitchen entrance leads off the main patio/terrace. It is modern and functional, complete with electric hob, oven, dishwasher, large fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, iron and ironing board, and well stocked with pans, cutlery, crockery, glasses and serving dishes. The washing machine in a separate room.

* Large through dining room / sitting room: extending dining room table and chairs.

* Good selection of dvd's, books and games.

* Sofa seating and open fireplace (plenty of olive wood provided for chillier evenings).

* CD player, TV and DVD player with a selection of films to suit all ages.

* All windows have mosquito netting and shutters.

* Bedroom 1: Double bedroom with wardrobe and bedside cabinet

* 2 further bedrooms and family bathroom up small flight of 4 steps

Los Parrales is set in its own olive grove. It has two terraces, one facing east, perfect for morning breakfast as the sun comes up, and a larger main terrace with a great 8 x 4 metre swimming pool and a poolside shower - which benefits from the sun until sunset - perfect for sunbathing! From here you can take full advantage of the stunning views of the surrounding hillside whitewashed villages.

The pool is fully tiled with steps, 1.4m deep in the shallow end and 1.8m in the deep end. It has underwater spot lights and colour changing lights for atmospheric night time swimming!

Inflatables and pool toys provided. There is also a football table, darts and badminton.

The large terrace provides a comfortable area in which to spend time relaxing by the pool and enjoying al fresco dining. There is a barbecue, sun loungers, parasols, garden furniture and two great old olive trees which provide welcome shade for lunch and look great illuminated at night. There are plenty of outside lights - eating al fresco in the cool of the evening is great - light some candles, enjoy a glass of local wine and marvel at the wonder of the night skies!

The house sits on a large plot which is dedicated to olive and fruit trees. There are pretty natural gardens around the house and although the terrain slopes down from the house, there are paths for exploring and discovering how many different types of fruit trees there are!

There are plenty of walks from the house, and is perfectly located for nature lovers and bird watchers. Down on the coast there is a large shopping mall with bowling & cinema complex, a waterpark for a great family day out, and lovely sea front promenade at Torre del Mar, with all that has to offer.
