Self Catering Holiday Accommodation at our characterful Spanish Country Villa with large private swimming pool, set in the Andalucian Hills between Malaga and Granada.

Spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding unspoilt countryside look over towards Lake Vinuela and the Mediterranean Sea.

The accommodation is spacious, stylishly decorated and comfortably furnished, with 3 luxurious double bedrooms, a lounge with library and music and movie system, and a huge well equipped kitchen diner. Little extras we provide include Egyptian cotton towels and designer bed linen, a welcome pack with our own local olive oil and specially bottled wine, and a house book with maps and local information.

The pool is really large - 10 by 5 metres - big enough for proper swimming or for a large group to splash about in, and deep enough for diving. There are sunbeds and a cane shaded canopy, and fantastic views from the poolside "mirador" (viewing terrace).

There are acres of space outside, including your own private olive groves to explore, huge oak tress to laze under, beautiful sunny gardens and vine shaded terraces.

There is an outdoor kitchen with barbecue and dining area for eating alfresco and dining under the stars.

Secluded and tranquil, La Amapola is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all, an ideal retreat for outdoor pursuits like horse riding, bird watching and hill walking, and within easy access of the local village of Periana, local tapas bars and some excellent restaurants.

The beaches of the Costa del Sol, with water sports, ice cream parlours and some fabulous seafood restaurants are only a 20 minute drive. It's an hour to sightseeing at Granada's Alhambra Palace and the shopping, museums and galleries of Malaga's historic centre.

Recommended outings and expeditions include touring the white hilltop villages of the Axarquia, a visit to El Torcal national park, or a day trip to Cordoba, Ronda or Seville.

We can advise on trips, restaurants and activities and are happy to help with reservations for the Alhambra Palace. Just ask us for details – we are happy to help!

The Andalucia region

La Amapola is located in the region of the Axarquia, one of the most spectacularly beautiful regions in rural Andalucía. White hill top villages are dotted amongst gentle rolling hills filled with wildflowers and wildlife, and dramatic views sweep down towards Lake Vinuela and the Mediterranean against the backdrop of Mount Maroma and the Sierra Tejeda.

Andalucia is the land of Flamenco, the local music of the Spanish gypsies, and the people are famous for their fire and passion as well as their warmth and hospitality. Fiestas are the life blood of the people, with firework displays, bands and colourful parades.

Almost every week sees a fiesta in celebration of a local saint, the peach harvest, the olive oil crop - or just for the sheer joy of celebration!

The Alhambra Palace is Granada's Moorish jewel, with fabulous architecture, sumptuous gardens and Moroccan mosaics. The Arabic quarter features a maze of winding streets with little shops selling Moroccan glass and leather ware, and "teteria" cafes where you can sample peppermint tea and honey cakes.

Malaga is the birthplace of Picasso and features the Picasso museum, a wealth of artistic and cultural treasures, and lots of tempting tapas bars, little shops, cafes and restaurants.

Seville - the setting for Bizet's opera “Carmen” – is a beautiful, festive and romantic city, and Cordoba features the famous Mezquita, a medieval Islamic mosque that was converted into a Catholic cathedral, with intricate workmanship in ivory, jasper, gold, silver, copper, and brass.

As well as sightseeing and celebrating, the Axarquia is the perfect location for outdoor pursuits, with horse riding, rock climbing, mountain biking and hill walking all on the doorstep.

There is abundant wild life, including wild boar and Spanish Ibex. For bird watching enthusiasts, there are Hoopoes, Golden Orioles, Eagles, Bee-eaters and Roller birds.

Butterflies and wild flowers proliferate, making this one of the most beautiful regions for spring or autumn explorations.

Periana

La Amapola is located 4kms form the pleasant market village of Periana, with shops, tapas bars and some excellent restaurants. There are a number of nearby pretty hilltop bars and a fabulous Lakeside venue for romantic dinners or family get togethers.

The nearest towns are Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar on the Costa del Sol, about 20 minutes drive. Torre del Mar is a typical Spanish beach resort, with a pretty pal dotted promenade, ice cream parlours, water sports, and lots of shops and restaurants.

Velez-Malaga is a bustling market town which dates back to Phoenician times. Sites of historic interest include the Palacio del Marqués de Beniel (1610–1616), the Church of Santa María la Mayor (1487) and the Convent of the Carmelites (1699), in Baroque style with a Renaissance portal.

"Heaven in the hills"

La Amapola is one of the best villas we have stayed in on holiday. While some villas are comfortable but ugly, pretty but cramped, with shiny bathrooms but a kitchen with nothing in it, or noisy or - … More
