"Homely, and catered for all our needs"
First I must say Mariaambee and Said were the most gracious hosts - answering our needs and enquiries promptly when called upon and leaving us be to enjoy the rest of our holiday. We chose self-catering so we could come and go as we pleased and do our own cooking and "braai" (grill/bbq outside) when we wanted. Our child could also play in the enclosed garden without fear of her falling into a pool. The added extra was that Blue Sky Villa was off a little side street so was very quiet - except for the fireworks, which were brilliant from the rooftop of our place. If you love birds whizzing up and down, this is a lovely place to choose. It was also nice to live in a Mauritian neighbourhood rather than amongst other holidaymakers. The best time to swim was with the locals down at the local Pereybere beach (better than Grand Baie in our opinion) in the evening and to spot the family picnics above the beach with night lights in the trees. We enjoyed delicious coconut ice-creams, coconut and fruit juices and fresh pineapples eaten lollipop-style from the core. The highlight for the three of us (husband, myself and our 4-yearold) was a night swim at Pereybere on New Years Eve with fireworks viewed right above us. Other nights the stars were stunning. The accommodation, which is a few minutes walk to the beach and Winners supermarket, and very close to Grand Baie, the Grand Baie Bazaar, restaurants, night life, hospital and the beautiful Cap Malheureux, was furnished with everything we needed including a great wifi connection and comfortable firm mattresses. As it was so hot, we didn't need hot water at all so didn't even check to see if it was there. If it wasn't, I'm sure friendly Said would have been there like a shot to sort it out. During our stay, we felt the effects of a passing cyclone and though we didn't eventually need it, Said promptly brought us a landline that loved ones could contact us on if necessary. Aircon, TV, appliances, fridge, freezer, washing machine, etc. all worked perfectly. Mozzie repellent is a pre-requisite that time of year and Said provided a pack of mosquito repellent coils which did a great job at fending them off. If you like soaking up the local atmosphere of places you visit, Blue Sky Villa is a great option. Wherever you stay in Mauritius, take the time to go exploring and to really see it. We hired a car that had GPS so there was no way of getting hopelessly lost, even when we did venture off the beaten track. Snorkelling was fantastic and we recommend a local guy called Jean from BB Blue who knows and respects the reef and doesn't charge outrageous prices. The fish are stunning and we even saw trumpet fish and two large squid! Take a good mozzie repellent and wear your reef shoes wherever you swim. (Blue Sky Villa had outside taps to wash off our sandy reef shoes too). Enjoy!
