Unlike others we do not request any breakage/damage deposit to our guests.We fell in love with Perast, and Montenegro generally, and bought this apartment (two years ago) so that we could return to this ‘heaven on earth’ destination, as we suited. We have spent much time, effort and money to restore and bring it up to the highest standards. The Boka Kotorska Fjord region
Boka Bay is the only European fjord outside of Scandinavia, officially on the list of ‘The Fifth Most Beautiful Bays in the World'.
It consists of four connected straits featuring a large butterfly. High cliffs, rugged grey-green mountains (sometimes pine trees covert) surround Boka Kotorska from all sides, which reflect in the deep crystal clear turquoise waters of the fjord. Seven islands decorate the Bay : Sveti Marko, Mamula, Milosrdja, Ostrvo Cveca, Ma Gospa and, first of all, the stunning twin church islets of Montenegro, Gospa od Skrpjela and Sveti Djordje which are in front of Perast.
On the wonderful road around Boka Kotorska (50km coastline !), from the oriental Herceg Novi to the medieval and baroque Perast, there are a chain of nice little cities with an old ferry that cross the strait in Lepetane.
But it is really nice take a boat trip across the Boka aboard of the picturesque ‘Pajo’ (the Duck) from Herceg Novi, at the entry of the fjord, to Perast, in his bottom.
Kotor, the ancient capital of Boka Kotorska, is a lively medieval walled town and is only a 15 mins drive away (there are also regular local bus services) from Perast by a road that connects many of the little coastal villages with their old churches and ancient houses or old ruins.
‘Stari Grad’ (the Old Town), which prohibits access to vehicles, is a labyrinth of side streets in which you will find many churches and houses of the 12th and 13th c., shops and elegant clothing stores, it just oozes with atmosphere and history, like a little Dubrovnik. There are many squares and piazzas, each with its own pavement cafes and restaurants, which after exploring the town you can just sit eat and drink al fresco and watch the world go by. Among the numerous restaurants, ‘La Pasteria’, open throughout the year, located in front of the Cathedral, is the best and very reasonably priced, according to us,
Kotor offers also several banks with outside cash machines, two chemists, an internet coffee shop (in the main square just after the gates of ‘Stari Grad’), a late open supermarket … and vibrant summertime nightlife. Regular festivals take place in the Old Town throughout the year.
People of the Boka (‘Bocchesi’ or ‘Bokeli’) are welcoming, very friendly and helpful and (broken) English is widely spoken (first of all among young people), but not quite as widely as Russian …
Perast area
Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site situated in a strategic place in the fjord's bottom, and often described as the "Jewel in the Crown" of the coast of Montenegro, Perast represents the best preserved baroque place in the Adriatic. Due to it being strictly protected by UNESCO, Perast is completely preserved of any modern construction. This unspoilt, romantic and peaceful village of fishermen, plenty relaxing for people who live in a large city, is full of history, old palaces and churches from the seafaring days of the Venetian Republic when it was the home of wealthy merchants.
Opposite Perast there are the famous twin church islets – St George and Our Lady of the Rock. Legend has it, a Lady died while waiting for her sailor lover to return from the seas. The sailor’s tribute to her was by throwing a rock in the same place for 400 years.
Ideal for romantic holiday just for two …
Perast is reputed to be the sunniest place throughout the year in the Adriatic (270 sunny days in the year). One can bathe from May to the end of October in the deep crystal waters of the fjord. The property is just 30 seconds to the sea and a little fish harbour, with many small beaches and jetties available locally for sunbathing, swimming from or if you prefer a spot of fishing, enjoying the absolutely amazing scenery of this magnificent place.
During the summer months the small beach bar (‘Pirates’) is 2 mins walk from our house and is open from morning till night. The beach is part sand part rock, but has sun umbrellas and sun lounges for all day hire. Otherwise, reserve a seat at the Pirate Bar and go for a dip when ever you like. It’s magic here, especially during sunset...
Just outside the apartment it is possible to take boat trips across to the islands.
The Adriatic coast is 20 mins drive away with the famous sandy Jaz beach. Here you can hire jet skis at very reasonable prices and there are many small bars and restaurants. Or if you prefer quieter sandy beaches, these can also be found on Lustica peninsula with its beautiful wild landscape 20 minutes drive away from Perast. Blue Horizon is a large sandy beach about 30 mins drive away.
The peaceful Perast is a short drive (13 km) from the vibrant Kotor. Budva riviera and Herceg Novi are 20 mins away and Dubrovnik (in Croatia) only one hour away.
Perast suits the more discerning traveller who is looking for something special and it is ideally situated for all your sightseeing trips around this stunning country that is Montenegro.
Montenegro is still relatively undiscovered by western tourism but this is sure to change next years with the publicity it has recently been given.
It is a little country and distances are very short. Cetinje (1000 meters above sea level and 1 hour drive away), the historic capital of the former Kingdom of Montenegro (until 1919), offers faded splendour and charm. Venturing inland are Winter Ski Resorts (Durmitor or Kolasin) and Northern Mountains (2 hours drive away) for the more intrepid explorers or travellers. Drafting in breath taking Tara Canyon (about 90 mins drive away), ballooning in Northern Mountains (2 hours drive away); canoeing; hanggliding; paragliding; microlighting; rock & mountain climbing; mountain biking; twitching; sailing; snorkeling, etc.
Skadar lake, one of Europe's largest which stretches down into Albania, is approx 90 mins drive away and is well worth a visit. Here lives 200 wildlife species known nowhere else. There are some other wonderful places to explore ‘en route’. Little villages off the beaten track.
The climate in Perast is very pleasant with long hot summers and short mild winters.The locals see the ‘season’ as starting on May 1st and lasting until mid October. Our experience is that April and October can be wonderful too (17° to 21°C). A tranquil environment shared with the locals only, with weather roughly similar to UK Summers. In the peak months, Montenegro can get really hot (28-30°C in July & August), but it is not oppressive and there is always the opportunity to dip into the cool deep waters of Kotor Bay or swim off countless beaches along the very near Adriatic coast. Winter are mild and sunny (average temperature: 14-15°C from December to March) and make Perast an excellent destination for a winter sun break. On the first Saturday of February take place in the waters of Perast the famous Mimosa Day .
Many painters, poets and writers, the first of all was Lord Byron, find inspiration along the shore of the fjord …especially in winter when peace, splendour and the magic atmosphere of Perast are shared only with people living here, cats, seagulls, St George and Our Lady of the Rock.
In Perast there are 2 local stores where most essential items can be purchased. It stocks fresh bread, fruit, milk, coffee, famous yogurts, fruit juices, excellent local beer and red or white wine, etc.
There is also a Post Office as well as several cafes and an excellent restaurant, ‘Konte’, which serve local fish, excellent meats and salads and where you can dine by the waterside.
‘Otok Bronza’ is another restaurant, and wine bar, located at the end of Perast towards Kotor. It is a picturesque and genuine ‘Konoba’ (tavern) within a noble house built at the beginning of the 15th c., with original stone walls and a stunning ground of rocks with a little brook inside... Milian, a dreamer and a humorist, and his wife Sania, who is in love with Vincent van Gogh, serves seafood, salads and very excellent meats in a romantic traditional atmosphere and at reasonable prices. Both restaurants are late open and throughout the year.
One of the best restaurants in Montenegro (‘Stari Mlini’) is in Ljuta (5 mins drive away from Perast towards Kotor).
The locals are lively and friendly, wining and dining is very cheap in comparison to the rest of Europe (including the near Croatia) : the cost of living is approximately half of that in Western Europe. Holidaying in Montenegro is made all the easier because the currency is the Euro. Credit Cards are not yet widely accepted (except in several restaurants, many shops in Kotor and supermarkets), but withdrawal is very easy from the numerous cash machines (but exclusively in Kotor).
Nearest market is 5 mins drive away in Risan where there are supermarket and daily market with fresh products, eggs, fruit, vegetables, cheese, olive oil, honey, ham, fish, etc. Also Kotor (10 mins drive away) offers an old picturesque and coloured daily fresh market (until one o’clock).
How to get there
Although Dubrovnik is in Croatia (not Montenegro), it is an easy drive (45/60 minutes) from Dubrovnik Airport (Cilipi) to the property. There are also flights into Tivat Airport (in Montenegro), which is just 25 minutes from the apartment. Up to now, we have not found the Tivat option convenient, but we are led to expect a wider range of direct flights in 2008 and beyond (Ryanair is soon planning into Tivat).

Car is not necessary (because regular local bus services in Kotor Bay) but required if you want to visit the stunning inland.
Car hire is available from the airport. The journey from the Dubrovnik airport to Perast is very easy and straightforward (along the stunning Kotor fjord) and should take approx. one hour, depending on the border crossing with Croatia - Montenegro. The border is approximately 20 mins from the airport. Our preference has been to hire a car for the full duration of the holiday. We are not great taxi users and baulk at the (one-way) taxi fare from the Airport to our property of up to 100 euros. We consider that this 200 euros cost could best be put towards a hire car that can be used throughout the holiday - and so avoid more taxi fares too. We book our hire car in the UK, via the Internet :Holiday Autos; Auto Europe; Alamo; SIXT; Europcar; etc (but we have found Economy Car Rental .com. particularly helpful).
If you can persuade your hirer to find you a car that automatically switches its lights off with the ignition off, this will help you. Lights are required for all driving in Montenegro, so this simple tip saves you the risk of an on-the-spot fine of 30 or 40 euros. When booking the car, you must check that there is no restriction taking it from Croatia to Montenegro. Usually, this is fine, but occasionally there might be an extra charge of a couple of euros per day.
Also, you can use local bus services or collective taxis from Dubrovnik Airport to Herceg Novi (in Montenegro) or Kotor.And if you land at the Tivat airport, we can contact for you our personal taximan (Branko) who will drive you directly at home for € 20.

Further details indoors: Our home offers a bedroom with wooden hand made double bed (with large storage space under for luggage or other things), very large wardrobe (inside a high wall stone 'niche'), board with internet access (ADSL), and … stunning sea view from two arched windows to the near famous twin islets. If necessary, the bedroom can be fully isolated of the rest of the flat by means of a strong wooden sliding partition (sea pictures). If not closed, one can enjoy during whole the day a very large (40 mq) and airy and sunny (6 windows) open space. There is a comfortable lounge area with double sofa bed, armchair, coffee table, TV and a dining area with table for 4 people and large stone bar that can seat 2 persons for easy eating. Old family coats of arms can be seen in the living area.
A well equipped modern kitchen plenty of storage space, with electric cooker, fridge/freezer, kettle, coffee and fruit juice machines and toaster etc. All crockery, cutlery, glasses and pans provided. Also cleaning utensils. A modern bathroom with semi circular shower enclosure, wash basin, WC, large bathroom mirror and vanity unit. There is a reverse cycle air conditioning in the living area enabling heating and cooling as required and an electric heater in the bedroom, making it a true year round destination.
In this house was born in 1680 one of the most famous great men of Perast, Admiral Count Matja Zmaievich, who can be seen in picture in the bedroom. His family coats of arms decorates the façade of the house.
Our neighbour Mrs Slava (Gloria), a genuine Mediterranean black dressed widow (77 years old), is a strong character, but she can be very sweet and helpful if you bring her some goodies from England. She lives with a beautiful speaking bird, named Sheesho …
Last but not the least, for those who are in love with cats, they will also see pictures of our three own (but Nikita, Ramses and Pavla are not living here) …
All linen and towels are provided, but you are expected to bring your own beach towels. The apartment will be cleaned (free of charges) before and after your stay.

Apartment is cleaned weekly before and after your stay and should be vacated by 11am and arrivals should be no earlier than 3pm to allow for cleaning.
You will be met by our local agent (Goran or Dragana) on your arrival and they will familiarise you with the apartment.
