La Petite Maison
About the home
Designed with quality & comfort in mind this house has been lovingly renovated to a very high standard. This “small but perfectly formed” house retains all the old features whilst introducing a super mix of new and old furnishings. A couple of minutes walk down from the house is a picturesque picnic area next to the river, which backs onto the local vineyards.
The Minervois, this wine producing area of which Pepieux village is part of, is a large plain that sits between the Black mountains to the north and the Corbieres and Pyrenees to the south. The geography provides the plain with its own micro-climate which is greatly influenced by the Mediterranean. The locals claim that they enjoy 300 days of good sunshine per year.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

Everywhere there are vineyards and further into the foothills of the mountains the 'Garrigue' of the Languedoc provides a wonderful setting for cycling and walking. The Mediterranean is just 30 minutes away if you want sandy beaches and the Pyrenees and Spain are just over an hour away.
This magnificent 'terroir' is steeped in history. Ancient terraces lie all around and are visible in the hills along the roadsides and up into the mountains. Ruined windmils (there are also some renovated windmills that you can visit locally) and shepherds' bergeries are scattered around the landscape. There are numerous megalithic burial grounds that are free to visit. You can even picnic inside them!
Then there is Carcassonne and it's fabulous Citadelle which is only 40 minutes away - a great day out for shopping and site-seeing medieval style.
The Pepieux area
The nearest town is Olonzac (4 km), on Tuesday’s it boasts a great market which is one of the largest & best in the area. Olonzac offers a range of cafes/bars which in the summer months often have local musician’s playing and a few restaurants, shops and professional services doctors, dentists and banks.
Lac du Jouarres, just 5 minutes drive away, has a beautiful lake ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, wind surfing, or simply just a pleasant spot to relax or to enjoy a meal at the restaurant there.
Follow Rick Stein's voyage in Anjodi, along the Canal du Midi at Homps just 5 minutes drive away where you can enjoy a boat trip, hire bikes or take stroll under the tree lined banks of the canal, a Unesco World heritage site.
You will find dozens of small charming villages around Pepieux. Minerve is probably the most well known village in the Minervois - it literally sits at the confluence of two enormous river gorges - the Cesse and the Brian. It is primarily famous as being the site of one of the last Cathar strongholds held siege by the Crusaders but is also officially one of the prettiest villages in france - well worth a visit and only 10-15 minutes drive from Pepieux.
