The West Country / Cornwall region
Cornwall is an enchanting county, or Celtic country as Mebyon Kernow would say, with a distinctive culture that makes visiting it almost like going abroad while remaining in England. The west of Cornwall, west Penwith, has numerous stunning, unspoiled sandy beaches and wild inland moorland. It is a marvellous area for walkers, swimmers, rock climbers, birdwatchers, naturalists, surfers and for all sorts of boating. There are two golf courses in this area at Lelant alongside the estuary and at Cape Cornwall.
Artists and potters are naturally drawn here in part by the quality of the light and towns like Penzance and St Ives each have many art galleries. As the most temperate area of Britain, the gardens (including the NT gardens) on the mainland and on the Scillies have a number of semi-tropical plants, with distinctive and prolific wild flowers in the hedgerows and along the cliffpaths. Its an area to fall in love with!
Penzance / Mousehole area
The West Cornwall area is a great holiday destination and has a lot to offer all age groups and types. There is much to see and do from sunbathing on the beautiful beaches and in the coves to walking through the wonderful moorland and clifftops enjoying the stunning scenery of this area to enjoying the small villages and towns. For those seeking more water based activities and thrills try surfing, windsurfing, diving and snorkelling in the azure waters which surround Penwith.
Visit the cathedral city of Truro just a few miles from Penzance and popular for shopping and sightseeing. Other places of interest include the Lizard peninsula and St Ives with the beautiful Tate gallery overlooking porthmeor beach.
Every June Penzance hosts Golowan a festival filled with colour and music. Mousehole itself has a summer carnival in July and an internation music seminar in April and September. From May to September the outdoor Minack theatre overlooking the cliffs at Porthcurno stages plays.
