The West Country region

Visit West Cornwall, the end of the land, with its ancient heritage and remarkable rock formations. You can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the fascinating landscapes and coastal views from the famous bustling town of St Ives to the unspoilt wilds of the Lizard Peninsula.

Cornwall has a rich smuggling and wrecking history with tales of murder and deception. Along this coastline you can enjoy a Cornish ale or cider where smugglers once gathered or head out along the coastline to explore the caves that hid their contraband.

For an alternative experience visit the Minack Theatre, carved into the coastal cliff overlooking the glorious Atlantic Ocean. Exposed to the elements, it will be a moment of your life you'll never forget. The charms of the sea tempt a distracted glance from even the most gripping performance.

St Ives, well known for its brightness and clarity of atmosphere, even on a cloudy day has artist's flocking to the area to capture this beautiful town in watercolour and oils. Explore the many giftshops, galleries and great restaurants located throughout the cobbled streets.

For a great day trip stroll across the causeway or hop on a ferry to discover the medieval castle that is St Michaels Mount.

As has been the same for hundreds of year's fisherman still head out to sea daily from sheltered harbours of Mousehole and Mullion into the unpredictable seas of the English Channel and return back home with boats laden full of fresh fish to sell to the local restaurants.

Penzance

Penzance, an ancient market town with fine Georgian and Regency architecture, hosts a good selection of interesting shops, restaurants and cafés. The town is also well served with two major supermarkets. Set in the sheltered corner of St. Mount's Bay the area is dominated by the historic St. Michael's Mount and it offers one of the most temperate climates in the UK. The restored art deco Jubilee Pool located between the promenade and harbour is the UK's largest open air seawater lido and is wonderful safe place to relax against a stunning backdrop. There are many fine beaches on the doorstep including Sennen Cove renowned for its surf and the unspoilt beaches at Porthcurno and Praa Sands. Penzance is also ideally situated for Truro and Falmouth and The Eden Project is less than an hours drive away. Both Penzance and nearby Newlyn have a thriving arts scene with several art galleries. Good links to the rest of the UK are provided by the mainland rail network, of which Penzance is the southernmost station. A reliable local bus service also gives holiday makers alternative options for exploring the area.
