BookThe West Country / Cornwall region
Last year saw Cornwall, once again, fight off the competition from across the UK to be crowned 'Best UK Holiday County or Region' in the British Travel Awards, widely known as the 'Oscars' of the travel industry. If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can download a free app 'Resort Cornwall on the App Store. Cornwall is well known for its 'micro-climate' resulting from it's close proximity to the Gulf Stream and because it is is effectively a peninsula. So, when the forecast in England is poor it is often lovely weather in Cornwall, and even when it has'soft' Cornish weather (missling rain), it soon passes and the sun comes out. West Cornwall area is consequently a premier holiday destination and offers something for everyone. Take your time to relax and bask in the sunshine, enjoying many of the golden beaches that adorn the West Cornwall coastline or take a relaxing walk through the lush moorland or a more energetic hike through the clifftops which will give you access to amazing scenery and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the Ocean on the famous National Coastal path. The walk between Mousehole and Lamorna is one of the top 10 most popular walks in the UK, and has to be recommended because it is completely stunning with an amazing variety of environments in a short distance. The Spring flowers are spectacular and summer butterflys exceptional. Picturesque and historic villages can be discovered everywhere and there is always something happening in the summer months that range from local festivals, such as Golawen in Penzance held between 20 – 27 June, fish festivals, to outdoor activities including the famous outdoor Minack theatre, through to surfing and diving schools. How's this for a comment from a Cornwall visitor to the world famous Sennen Cove "For and ideal day out, I would arrive at Sennen Cove and park outside Chapel Idne surf shop. Soon we'd be in the pristine sea, with dolphins, seals and basking sharks, riding waves and chatting with the regulars. As the sun sets over the Isles of Scilly, there's no better place to be". There is an abundance of culture, heritage and spirit in this area, including the famous Newlyn Art Gallery and Barbara Hepworth Museum and Tate Gallery in St Ives. Sample the wonderful Cornish cuisine in one of the many traditional English pubs or watch the sun set whilst enjoying a cream tea and cakes in one of the many cafes. This area is also a must for shoppers with its mix of big name retail outlets and smaller eclectic shops. Whether you are looking for an action packed holiday, family holiday or somewhere to get away from it all, West Cornwall is an ideal destination for any type of holidaymaker.
The Penzance / Gulval area
The apartment is a perfect base from which to explore the delights of West Cornwall, because everything is within such easy reach. Gulval is just a few hundred yards down the hill, from the Manor, and has a post office and limited general store. The Church, dating from the 14th century, is surrounded by a unique exotically planted graveyard, where you can find the Pirate's Grave and a magical well. During the Summer months church goers offer home made Cornish cream teas in the church to raise funds to maintain the property. The local pub, the Coldstreamer Inn, opposite the church, serves an interesting menu based on local Cornish produce, and is currently widely known as one of the best restaurants in West Cornwall. Sitting on the shores of Mount's Bay an dominated by the majestic island castle of St Michael's Mount, is Penzance, a town surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. Crystal clear waters and award winning beaches, ancient moorlands and sub-tropical plants, secluded coves and cliff-top walks make this most westerly borough of Cornwall a true delight to visit. Penzance itself is a fascinating historic, arty and seafaring town which has now developed a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture. It also 'boasts' having one of the only outdoor Art Deco lidos, the Jubilee Pool, opened in 1935 - the year of King George V's silver jubilee. You can be sure this will be a focus of attention during our Queen's Golden Jubilee celebration in 2012. And, with other popular towns, top beaches and the "hidden" corners of the peninsula never being more than 10 miles from Penzance it makes an ideal centre from which to explore the west of Cornwall. From the grand entrance and long sweeping drive of Kenegie Manor you will see the fairytale St Michael's Mount Castle, the centre piece of stunning Mounts Bay and located just 2 miles from the Manor is a helicopter port where you can experience a day trip to the beautiful Isles of Scilly. Land's End, and the picturesque fishing villages of St Ives, Mousehole and Newlyn, with it's fish festival on the last Monday in August, are all close at hand. St Ives is a very popular Cornish resort town and is approximately 6 miles away and offers the world famous Tate Gallery and Barbara Hepworth museum. Holiday Haemodialysis is available in Penzance at a satellite hospital unit but you will need to book very early as it is understandably popular. For more information please contact holiday.dialysis@rcht.cornwall.nhs.uk The beautiful sandy and blue flag acclaimed beaches of Sennen and Gwithian, Hayle are both also within a short distance of the property. The area abounds with Theme Parks and holiday attractions such as Flambards, The Eden Project, Minack 'open air' Theatre and Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary. Great local events include the Helston Flora Day on 8th May and the Golawen Festival in Penzance between 21 - 30 June, with Maizey Day being on 29 June. 26 August is the Newlyn Fish Festival. An exceptional event is the Penzance Montol Festival between the 14 - 22nd December.
