About this location

The Cornwall region

Location and access

We have a very central location in Cornwall - most of what the county has to offer is within easy reach. We are on a quiet lane a mile or so from the A39, so very accessible by car. There is a bus stop a mile away with regular buses to Truro, Redruth, Falmouth and Helston. The nearest railway station is at Penryn, 3 miles away.

Our central location means you can access beaches on the north, south and west coasts according to the weather and your inclination! The beaches in Falmouth (15 mins) and south to the Helford River are sandy, bounded by rockpools, and renowned for their diving, sailing and kayaking. North coast beaches (20-25 minutes) are reliable surfing beaches, linked by stunning stretches of coastpath. To the west, the Lizard offers renowned beaches such as at Gunwalloe (30 mins) and Poldhu - perfect beaches that never seem overcrowded even on the finest day. For surf reports and beach cams -

The city of Truro and towns of Penryn and Falmouth are close by with abundant pubs, restaurants and shops. Penryn is the closest (5mins) - a small, quiet town with much character and history, and now the home of Tremough, Cornwall's university campus - Falmouth is a lively town (15 mins). It boasts the third deepest harbour in the world (after Rio and Sydney) and has a proud seafaring history. Now home to the thriving art college, and with its cinemas, and award-winning art gallery, it has an energy about it which sets it apart from more sleepy Cornish towns. Truro (25mins) is Cornwall's capital and home to its best shops and the Hall for Cornwall with its varied programme of theatre Other towns such as Redruth, Helston, Camborne, are all within half an hour. St Ives, Newquay and Penzance are only a little further.

From Higher Lidgey there are many lovely walks. Just walking up our lane Wood Hill is particularly lovely - it's a double avenue of mature beech trees and differs with every season as daffodils, primroses and bluebells come and go in turn and the leaves change their colour. Also from Higher Lidgey the walk to the old gunpowder mills at Kennal Vale is a popular choice - this deep wooded valley contains the ruins of a long gone industry and is very evocative with its many aqueducts and rusting water wheels. We are spoilt for choice for other walks, but walks around Flushing and Mylor, Trellissick, Mawnan Church, Porthtowan, Prussia Cove and Godrevy are among our favourites and in easy reach.

Apart from simply touring the lanes, there is a network of safe cycle paths following the old horse-drawn mineral 'tramways', which pre-date the railways. Bike hire is available nearby at Bissoe.

It's hard to know where to start. Surfing, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, kite-surfing, sea fishing are all available close by, with a choice of wild Atlantic beaches, secluded coves, rivers and estuaries, and of course the Carrick Roads, Falmouth's mile-wide harbour. We can advise on the best places to go to hire equipment and book lessons. We are also just two miles from Stithians Reservoir, a major centre for watersports in Cornwall.

Pubs and Restaurants

This part of Cornwall is well served for both pubs and restaurants. Our own local pub - the Stag Hunt in Ponsanooth - has a music night on a Thursday which is friendly and fun and even better, in walking distance! If you turn up without an instrument you will be in a minority but made to feel very welcome. Better known are the Pandora Inn at Mylor, The Ferryboat on the Helford River, The Golden Lion in Stithians, and in Falmouth the Chain Locker. Restaurants in Falmouth include Rick Stein's, Hunkydory, the Cove, Indaba Fish, and a recent discovery, the amazing Wheelhouse which specialises in local seafood.

Also very famous in this part of the world, the legacy of the Victorian plant collectors, and of the mildest climate in the UK. The National Trust's Trellisick, Glendurgan and Godolphin House are all nearby. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are a day trip (45 minutes). Also there are charming and less well known gardens like Trebah, Enys and Pottager.

Children and babies

One of our fields contains a treehouse, zipwire, trampoline and swing and there are plenty of trees to climb and good places to make dens. Higher Lidgey is the sort of place where kids don't want to come in for tea even when it's getting dark! Children are welcome to help feed the chickens and collect eggs or bring wood in - there is always something fun to do.

As well as the attractions listed above, for younger visitors there is Raze the Roof soft play in Penryn, Ships and Castles fun pool in Falmouth and swing parks in Stithians and Ponsanooth. Stithians (2 miles) also has a skate park. We can provide a baby-listening or baby-sitting service. Please contact us for details.

"Perfect Escape"

Bryony Cottage is wonderful. All the facilities you need for a really comfortable and relaxing break. Being able to sit on the decking on a September evening with a glass of wine and watch swallows was a real treat

Many guests comment on the "away from it all" feel of the cottage and conversely the accessibility of it to many great places to visit and enjoy.
The modern and comfortable design of the cottage enables you to relax quickly and enjoy the holiday in comfort.

"Wonderful cottage just perfect for the two of us"

We liked this cottage which is very well fitted with smart, modern furniture and fittings. There are large picture windows overlooking fields. Outside the large glass doors is a patio with barbecue where we could eat and relax in a peaceful seeing. Although you feel you are in the middle of nowhere your are very near many interesting places. In about 15 minutes you can be into Falmouth and in about 30 minutes to Truro. The beaches are lovely with clear water for swimming. The National Trust properties of Trelissick and Glendurgan are nearby and there are many other gardens in the area. There are also many lovely walks. We had a perfect holiday and thought it all super.

Our cottage is designed so that space and light are maximised. Our guests really appreciate the open views and private space that is created whilst also staying in an area close to many places to visit and enjoy.

"Idyllic rural retreat"

Highly recommend this holiday property set in a picturesque corner of Cornwall, accessible to a swathe of breathtaking beaches and fantastic local amenities.
The cottage combined stylish modernity with all the traditional comforts. We enjoyed excellent facilities and a warm helpful welcome from the owners.
Can't wait to stay again especially as you can collect fresh eggs daily from their hens on a nearby meadow.

We delight in being able to offer the cottage due to its location and carefully chosen internal design to maximise the light, space and furnishings. We're very close to many places to visit and enjoy that often there are too many choices! Instead you can choose to relax within the cottage's tranquil setting.

Lots of space both inside and outside give our guests the relaxation they often seek in a holiday place. Our wood-burning stove is very popular throughout the year and there's a free supply of logs outside for you to use.
The location of the cottage means that you can happily relax in its close environs but can easily visit other places throughout Cornwall.
