The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District is England's largest National Park, home to it's highest mountain, it's deepest and longest lakes.

Ullswater is the second longest,at 7½ miles long. It's deep, too, with the high fells of High Street on its eastern side. Wordsworth declared Ullswater to be “the happiest combination of beauty and grandeur, which any of the Lakes affords”.

Glencoyne Woods have another Wordsworth claim to fame; perhaps the greatest of them all. Here,in April 1802, William and his sister Dorothy spotted swathes of wild daffodils at the lakeside and was inspired to write

“I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodills;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”

Ullswater is known as the most romantic lake, peaceful and serene, away from the madding crowds.

The local Brackenrigg Inn,on the lake road,is half a mile downhill from the flat, the Rampsbeck Country House Hotel a little further along, for fine dining - and the world-renowned Sharrow Bay Hotel, is just across the lake.

The picturesque villages of Pooley Bridge and Glenridding, at either end of the lake, offer shops, pubs, tearooms, and access to activities on the fells or lake - walking, climbing, cycling, riding, sailing, canoeing and more.

Ullswater Cruises operate two diesel craft 'Raven' and 'Lady of the Lake' during the summmertime and possibly the best lakeshore walk is found between Howtown and Glenridding - two of the three stopping points for the boats, with striking views across Ullswater.

You can launch your own boat at Howtown, only 10 minutes drive away, or take out temporary membership of Ullswater Yacht Club.

On the western shore is the renowned Aira Force waterfall, now in the hands of the National Trust. Aira Force has a 70ft drop through beautiful woodland. There is a good car park, café and facilities, and a marked half-mile walk towards the fall.
