The Cumbria/Lake District region
From roaming, to Romans and Reivers. Cumbria is an area rich in natural beauty, wildlife and history. You can relax in some of the picturesque and peaceful villages, get your boots on and take to England's highest mountains or stroll gently along the banks of bubbling becks. The Lake District contains most of England's lakes and from the Ulswater steamer, the Coniston Gondola or the famous Windermere ferries you can enjoy a leisurely alternative view of this outstanding area.
To the North of the county is the World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall, the limit of the Roman empire, where you can walk in the footsteps of the legionnaires and learn what the Romans did for you! This is the area of the Reivers, those border families whose main trade was stealing and killing from each other for almost 100 years until the unification of England and Scotland.. Find the Reivers surnames and see if you are related?
if you need refreshment you can find numerous friendly pubs and restaurants in the county and even England's highest cafe.
The Penrith area
Our area includes part of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of reasons to appreciate the scenery and surroundings. Our cottages are in the heart of the Eden Valley, an unspoilt haven, close to the Lakes but far from the crowds, with many types of attrations to suit all needs.
Penrith is a real town in a very convenient location - close to the M6 motorway and on the main west coast railway line. Although it is only 6 miles from stunning Lake Ullswater it doesn't live from tourism like Keswick or Windermere. It is a great place for food with lots of cafés, restaurants, pubs, a farmers market, old fashioned grocers shops and modern supermarkets. Near Penrith is the Eden Valley with Lacy's Caves, Long Meg & her daughters, Coombs Wood and attractions such as Eden Ostrich World, Penrith Laser Wars, Eden Soaring (gliding) as well as the South Tynedale Railway, the Hub museum & Nenthead mines up in the North Pennines.

Leave the M6 motorway at junction 40 - PENRITH and take the A66 east till the next roundabout where the A66 crosses the A6 and the A686 starts. Follow the A686 towards ALSTON - the North Pennines. After 5 miles you will reach the military-style bridge crossing the River Eden at LANGWATHBY. Continue on the A686 till you reach MELMERBY. Just as you are leaving the village you will see a minor road to the left signposted GAMBLESBY. There is a small caravan site on the left. Follow this road for just over one mile until you reach the village. Church Court Cottages are on the right hand side opposite St.John's Church.
