Villa Degna
About the home
The Villa stands in 7 acres of beautiful, rural Italian farmland with many types of young trees: cherry, olive, plum, peach, walnut, almond and weeping willow. Once you navigate the half kilometer driveway from the single track road to the driveway, you will see the cherry trees on your left and a beautiful view to the right which over looks the valley and the river. As you approach the villa you will see the pool and patio to the left and a veranda and doorway to the house. In front of you to the right is the barn and old chicken coup to the left is the garage/storeroom.
The pool is 8x4metres surrounded by a large patio area, lounging beside which is thoroughly recommended with a Peroni or glass of wine. This patio area really comes into it's own during the hot summer months. The storeroom is primarily for garden tools (and wine) but also contains a table football and a selection of ball games.
There's also a working pizza oven and outside wash basin. The barn used to house donkeys, but is now home to a tractor and most enjoyably an owl, which you can frequently see flying at dusk, along with other birds of prey. These are not the only wildlife attraction; lizards are plentiful, frogs and toads can be heard, but rarely seen and magical fire flies at certain times of year.
Villa Degna is also a great location for spring or winter breaks. The magnificent scenery of the snow capped Appenini Mountains and the cosy wood burning fire make it ideal for a short break during the spring/winter months.
For those who are keen skiers, there is an abundance of high quality ski resorts all within an hours drive from Villa Degna. This is one of Abruzzo's best kept secrets! Passo Lanciano, Roccaraso and Campo Imperatore just to name a few of the well equipped resorts enjoyed by many Italians. If skiing is not for you, simply walking and taking in the fresh mountain air will regenerate and refresh you. Coffee Al Fresco in the winter sunshine is highly reccomended as are the many local restaurants offering traditional home made Abruzzesi dishes!

The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

Abruzzo, set between the Appenine mountains and the Adriatic sea, is known as the 'green region of Europe', with over a third of it's surface protected.
4 National Parks, high picks for trekking (Gran Sasso), skiing resorts (Maiella mountain and Campo Imperatore), sandy and stone beaches (Pineto, Torre di Cerrano and S.Vito Chietino), lots of medieval towns on top of hills, handicrafts, museums and a lot more. Local produces such as 'arrosticini' (skewered barbecued mutton), truffles, cheese (pecorino), hand-made pasta, liquors (ratafia, genziana, centreba), saffron and of course the Montepulciano D'Abruzzo and the Trebbiano white wine make it special from the "food and wine/enogastronomic" point of view!
In addition to all this, its central position makes it easy to reach Rome (about 2 1/2 hours by car) and you could extend your holiday to Croatia taking the ferry from Pescara!
The Penne, Abruzzo area
Villa Degna is approximately 40Kms north west of Pescara, set relatively high (300m), into the agricultural heartland of Abruzzo.
It's general location being between Penne and Teramo just off the SS81. It is perfectly situated in idyllic countryside. Only 2 kms away lies the small village of Piane where the are several shops including a supermarket, café and fresh fruit and veg shop and even a bank, a baby's clothing shop and ladies shoe shop. A further short distance away lies Cesi, which has a larger (cheaper) supermarket, with an excellent butcher, bar, pizzeria, fruit & veg shop and a florist. There are also many excellent quality restaurants in the local vicinity.
Nearby Castiglione M.R. (15" drive) has additional shops, including an excellent butchers and fresh pasta shop, as well as a bank and post office. Also, Penne (15" drive) has a good range of shops and a lovely old medieval section.
The sandy beaches of the Adriatic are just 30-40 minutes from our villa. Abruzzo has a very long coast line of pine-fringed, clean, sandy beaches that stretch for more than 15 miles. The shallow, warm waters of the Adriatic are ideal for safe family bathing (keep in mind Torre di Cerrano beach!).
Nearby is Pescara, a modern city with a full range of facilities including an outstanding international airport and a large tourist marina, considered to be one of the best marinas in Italy.
Walking/rambling:
You can reach the Gran Sasso & Maiella National Parks in just 40 minutes. The National Parks cover one-third of the territory of Abruzzo, so there is an abundance of walks and trails of various lengths and levels of difficulty. You can enjoy majestic mountain scenery with a wide variety of flora and fauna, and, if you are lucky, you may spot a wild bear, wolf or chamois.
Possible walks and visits:
- Atri and the Calachi reserve;
- tour of Loreto Aprutino and Penne;
- Castelli and its surroundings - pottery and high mountains;
- Calderone glacier (the southernmost glacier in Europe);
- Along the sheep-track;
- Monastries and Hermitages;
- the capital of the region: L'Aquila;
- Teramo.

Never before have we stayed in such a well equipped place! The pool was fantastic, the view superb and the surrounding towns a delight!
June 2010 Mylne Family from Brisbane, Australia
What a great find, we loved everything about Villa Degna: magnificent views, quiet and peaceful, beautiful gardens, extremely well equipped.
We enjoyed visiting the historic towns in the area: Atri, Farindola, Penne.
The drive up to the Gran Sasso National Park was amazing. We drove through low clouds and then suddenly we came to a beautiful valley surrounded by snow. The farmers in the area are very friendly as we were often greeted with "Buongiorno" and "Buonasera" on our walks along the country lanes, in the mornings and in the evenings.
Thank you so much for making our holiday here so enjoyable.
Wonderfully equipped kitchen, lovely bathrooms, DVD's and a washing machine!
Mila was very helpful.
July 2010 Paula Smith from Ireland
A beautiful home from home. We enjoyed our two weeks stay. The pool is great-our son took his first swim in it! We had a lovely drive to the beach in Pineto. We ate out a few times but mostly BBQ here! New Evo is a good restaurant in Loreto-Octavio runs it and he is a lovely man. There is a lot to see and do in the area - but we just stayed here mostly!! Drank vino and swam in the pool. Really hope to come back next year!
Everything was beautiful when we arrived and Mila was very helpful during the booking, arrival and departure.
My friends are all jealous of the photos up on Facebook!
July 2010 Kristof, Dorine and their three children Michelle, Xander and Charlotte from Belgium

The panoramic views are unforgettable, the swimming pool was very refreshing.
This place has a special place in our memories.
July 2010 Family Flacke from Norway
We arrived late Monday evening after a flight to Rome, so by car to this amazing place. The navigator took us straight to the door!
This place is just lovely and so peaceful!
We like all we see and are so thankful for these days we've spent here. We can see God in all the creation!
Some of the days we have traveled around visiting Silvi Marina, Silvi Alta, Penne and Montefino, but the best time we spent it here :-)
The pool is wonderful (it got fixed during the time we were here!). We spent a lot of time by the pool. It has been really hot weather during this week (35-38°C) and that is really hot for us Norwegian polar bears!
Thank you for this lovely week and we really would like to come back!
August 2010 Phil and Wendy from the UK

The views are outstanding from the terrace and the pool.
Of all the beautiful towns & cities that we have visited Atri is our favourite.
Great Pizza at the nearby place and if you ever decide to sell the villa let us know!
Enjoy your stay!
