The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo is in Central Italy, on the Adriatic coast and is recognised as the greenest region of Europe. It has been given this title thanks to its high mountains, undulating hills and wonderful nature. It has 3 National Parks, 2 Regional parks and about 20 nature reserves created to protect the fauna and flora of this wild region.

In Abruzzo you can experience breath-taking scenery that renews the body and soul. Beautiful rivers and lakes, snow capped mountains, verdant hills and a sparkling azure sea. The fertile land provides all sort of fruits and vegetables, excellent wines and some of the best olive oil in the world. The villages seem to have stopped time and the people still have time for each other. You can enjoy swimming, fishing and sailing in blue-green waters. Skiing in the Winter and long lazy sunny days on the miles of sandy beaches in the summer. Whatever you want you can find it in Abruzzo.

Every season is the right for a visit to Abruzzo. Winters for skiing, springs for walking and sight-seeing, summers for enjoying the beach or the mountains and autumn for admiring the changing colours of the landscape while picking olives and grapes.

Abruzzo offers something for everyone. The beaches stretch for 120 km. The mountains reach up to the sky the Gran Sasso peaks at 2915 and the Maiella at 2794. In the parks and protected areas that extend over a third of the region's territory, you'll find wonderful flora and fauna. The peaceful countryside offers vistas across the rolling hills and the towns and villages a range of archaeological museums, ruins of old castles and wonderful places to eat!

Everybody! There really is something for everybody in Abruzzo. There is warm weather, relaxing countryside, safe, sandy beaches with low water that are ideal for children. In summer the coastal towns offer a vibrant mix of restaurants, pubs, wine bars, and discos while inland the hill towns offer a shady tranquil retreat from the summer sun. The food and wines are delicious and eating out doesn't cost a fortune! Sporty people can enjoy skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon, or go off hiking, climbing or horse-riding. For those who prefer art and culture the Abruzzo is full of museums, theatres, historic churches and archaeological sites to visit.

Penne

Farindola lies beautifully on top of a hill. It's a historical village with lots of old houses. There are nice bars and restaurants. Also there is a bank, a post office and shops.

The historical city of Penne is worth a visit and is about 15 minutes drive. There you find everything you need. Between Penne and Farindola you find Lago di Penne, a lovely lake in protected area. The lake provides the area with water.

Going up you find half way the mountains the lovely Rigopiano. Here you find lovely places to pick nick. Going further up you find a large plateau with small restaurants where you often can buy meat to grill it yourself on the BBQ outside, together with the Italians.

There are lots of nice historical villages in the neighbourhood like Loreto Aprutino, Collecorvino, Castiglione Messer Raimondo etc.

Also you can take a swim in the lovely Adriatic Sea and enjoy an excellent fish lunch at the beach. It will take about 40 minutes drive on quiet roads through lovely nature. At the coast it's still possible to park also in summer.

For excellent shopping you go to Pescara. There you find all luxury brands and a lot of choice.

Restaurants you find everywhere. Just go to places where are also Italians and you will certainly have a good meal.

In a bar you often can have breakfast. A cappuccino or espresso with a cornetto or panino will make a good start of your day.
