The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

¨Tired of big noisy crowds consisting of mostly American tourists? Just head east out of Rome to come to Italy's rustic heart, Abruzzo, and in just a few hours you'll be in one of Italy's best kept secrets¨ Conde Naste Magazine
The Abruzzo region of central Italy often refered as ¨the Garden of Europe¨. Protected from the hords of tourists that overcrowd Tuscany every year, Abruzzo is virtually untouched. It has spectacular natural scenery, medieval castles and villages, monasteries, and Roman ruins. Two-thirds of the Abruzzo's land is mountainous with the rest being hills and coast. A third of the region is designated as national or regional parkland. Bordering regions are the Marche to the north, Lazio to the west, Molise to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east.
Main train lines run along the coast and from Rome to Pescara, stopping in Avezzano and Sulmona. Many buses run between large cities and from cities to small villages so it's possible to reach many places by bus. Since much of the Abruzzo is rural or scenic parkland, the best way to really explore the area is with a car.
Much of the Abruzzo region is in national or regional parks. Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo is a large protected area with good hiking and biking trails. Its seven visitor centers have trail maps and information. Gran Sasso, the highest point in the Apennine Mountains, has hiking trails, spring wildflowers, and winter skiing.
Pescara, on the Adriatic coast, is the largest city in the Abruzzo region. Although it was badly bombed during the war, it's now one of the best examples of a modern Italian city and still retains some historic elements. Pescara has a nice seaside promenade, 20 km of sandy beach, great seafood restaurants, and lots of nightlife. The Museum of the Abruzzi People has a huge collection of artifacts about life in the Abruzzo from prehistoric times through the 19th century. Pescara has a few other museums and several good churches and buildings, too. In July, Pescara holds an international jazz festival.
The countless small villages of Abruzzo celebrate many traditional festivals throughout the year.
The Penne, Abruzzo / Lago di Penne area
Penne is a town and comune in the province of Pescara, in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy. It sits in the hills between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea.
The economy of Penne is driven mainly by tourism, agriculture, the regional hospital and Brioni, the Italian fashion house whose suits are still hand sewn by Pennese women.
The town is very ancient, having been a seat of government of the Vestini people starting around 300 BC.
In the Middle Ages, Penne was under the control of the Lombards as part of the Duchy of Spoleto. Starting around 1130 Penne became part of the Kingdom of Sicily.
As a result of this rich history, it has many architectural treasures, such as the Church of San Nicola, attached to the tower of the ancient medieval wallsa, the romanesque church of Sant'Agostino, re-decorated in the baroque style
many fine Palaces as the Bono-Pilotta with Baroque portal and 18th-century frescoes, and the 17th-century Castiglione De Leone the Cathedral, which contains precious works of art, such as a 15th-century holy-water basin, a 12th century altar, and a crypt dating back to the early centuries of the Christian era, and the Museo Civico-Diocesano.
The house is situated within the Riserva Naturale Lago di Penne.
The Riserva Naturale Lago di Penne, established in 1987, includs a Botanical Garden and an Area where sick and wounded birds are looked after and then left free in the Reserve, which comprises the whole lake, its coasts and a part of the Tavo river, and hosts over 160 species of birds. It is also home to the unique ¨Butterfly Garden¨.
The Riserva is well equipped with a Visitor Centre, a hostel and a dining hall. Educational and study activities are organized by the Centro di Educazione Ambientale "A. Bellini", a Natural History Museum dedicated to Nicola De Leone, the Botanical Gardens, the Otter Centre and a Butterfly Garden, as well as some wildlife areas and hiking trails. The Reserve is involved in intense scientific research and has started up several important wildlife protection projects, of which the most famous is the Progetto Lontra, otter preservation scheme. For this purpose a special structure was created on the shores of lake Penne, where this shy and very rare animal can be observed, and where it can mate in tranquillity.
The environmental conditions and the protection afforded by the Reserve have made this lake a significant habitat for resident and migrating birdlife, who nest and reproduce here. The night heron, the symbol of the protected area, has been nesting here for a number of years, as has the dwarf heron. The Reserve is also a stopover for many migrant birds like rare cranes, of which over 1,000 landed in 2002, causing a major zoological event.
The are is also home to several weekly markets, water parks, and a wide variety of summer festivals.
