About the home
The house itself is set deep within the town walls, where the Italian resistance used passageways underneath the house to bring food and word into the village away from the gaze of the German guard. The passageway still exists, but now has a less exciting use..
Casa Liozzi is a beautiful, historic Italian townhouse set in the rolling foothills of the Macerata countryside. Over the last 10 years, a careful restoration of the property has taken place to bring us to where we are today, modern luxury and medieval charm.
Casa Liozzi is the birthplace of Antonio Liozzi, an 18th artist who studied in Rome under the tutelage of Marco Benefial during the early 1700's and whose work can be seen throughout the local area at numerous theatres and Cathedrals. Taking in the beauty of not only his home, the village of Penna San Giovanni and the surrounding natural area, it is easy to see where he found his inspiration.
The village itself is a charming hill-top town, with many a convenience that would surprise such as working bank, pharmacy, cafe’s, a pizzeria and numerous small shops which can sustain any want.
Le Marche is a perfect base for any holiday, offering culture, history and sports to relaxing beaches and lakes. We are not touched by the mass tourism of other regions and we still hold that real Italian feeling with many an unspoilt place to visit and attempting a few words of Italian will guarantee you a warm welcome and a friendly smile. Penna San Giovanni and Casa Liozzi provide a taste of the real Italy.

The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

The Marche region lies in the east of central Italy, bordered by Umbria and Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo. A long deep blue coastline to the east wild and mysterious Apennine mountains to the west.
The hills of the Macerata countryside are dotted with magical hilltop villages where you can admire the medieval architecture or simply sit outside a café, sipping a chilled glass of the local Verdicchio wine and watching the world go by.
A trip to Urbino, a pinnacle of Renaissance architecture and the birthplace of Raphael, is a must. The magnificent Palazzo Ducale houses works by Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Piero della Francesca. Other towns rich in art and culture include Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Fabriano, Macerata and Camerino.
For opera lovers, the wonderful neo-classical open-air amphitheatre in Macerata hosts an internationally renowned opera festival every July and August.
For the more energetic, the region is ideal for walking, cycling, mountain biking, watersports and horse riding. We are nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Sibillini National Park has peaks of over 2000 meters and is well worth a visit and the huge peaks visible from the balcony
The Penna San Giovanni area
Although quite small, Penna San Giovanni has a whole load of things you might not expect to find in a village of 500 people!
We have a bank open monday to friday, a butchers, a bakers, not sure if we still have a candle stick maker but Stefano is a carpenter and has hand crafted all the windows in Casa Liozzi!
We have 2 village stores, a pharmacy and a tobacconist, 2 bars and a fantastic Pizzeria. If you need a haircut then don’t fret, we have a local barber and a very busy and bustling hairdressers too. A petrol station and a florist, a few shops selling all sorts of wierd and wonderful and a fantastic Osteria, ‘Enoteca La Grotta‘ which opens in the summer with local wine, meats and cheeses, it is well worth a trip!
Lastly, the Teatro Flora, the local theatre which has to be seen to be believed, a most beautiful small theatre with paintings by Antonio Liozzi himself.

Guestbook for Casa Liozzi
“Hello Jon, I want to say a big thank-you to you. Our recent stay at your residence in Penna San Giovanni was most enjoyable. The house description was very accurate and lived up to our expectations. The character features, fine comfortable decor and view from the balcony all added to our relaxing evenings follow the challenging local hills. We will defiantly stay at your house again and recommend it to friends and family. Regards,”
Jamie Sanderson, Cheltenham, UK.
“Casa Liozzi is lovely and the village of Penna makes a great base for a training week. The ride down to Sarnano was done several times and is just fantastic, and can be the start of rides up into the mountains or valley rides back to the bottom of the hill up to Penna. We went for the roads above the valleys as the all round views were just breathtaking. April weather was not as hot as we expected, but was loads better than the UK and was sunny, so made ideal riding conditions. The last cobbled hill to the house is steep enough to finish the legs off completely, making a cold beer on the balcony the only reasonable response. The house is comfortable and we really enjoyed our stay. Paolo’s place does all you need for a meal out and is just a short walk.”
Duncan & Jane, Co. Durham
“We rented the house in may and had a really nice relaxing week. Great weather and made the most of the beach and the mountains too, cant wait to go back for more wine and Pizza! ”
Rob & Michelle Scott, Northumberland.
“The house is fantastic, you know you’ve arrived in a lovely area of the world when you walk out onto the balcony with its beautiful view overlooking the Sibillini Mountains ! It has been renovated to a high standard but still retains that historic charm. The Village (Penna) is also splendid and has a lovely pizzeria (Paolo’s place) which is so cheap and great for refueling after a long day in the saddle.
The area is great for cycling and visiting lots of rustic charming italian villages. Close by is Macerata for the opera and Lago di Fiastra for sunny some lake swims.
The owner Jon, a ‘wannabe’ cyclist is a splendid friendly chap and will ensure you have a lovely holiday.”
Ben Leaver, Yarm. (Cheers for that Ben! Jon B)
“Penna San Giovanni is the perfect location to be based for some serious training, whilst also being perfectly suited to more leisurely riding and a holiday and during our stay we managed to combine all three! The riding is fantastic, with very quiet roads, beautiful scenery and some great climbs, but don’t worry if you’re not a mountain goat, there are some flatter options too. However be prepared for at least one climb because Penna San Giovanni is built on top of a hill, as are most of the medieval towns in the area. The small town has everything you need whether you are buying food in for self catering or fancy a local restaurant, the local residents are very friendly and you will be truly immersed in the Italian culture. Casa Liozzi (the house) is a great place to stay with the thick stone walls keeping the building cool in hot weather and amazing views from the balcony over the valley below. Highly recommended!!”
