The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Costa del Azahar region

The region is the home of Paella and fresh sea food abounds whilst lamb, artichokes and oranges are also associated with the area. Horchata de Chufa – a chilled, sweet, nut-based drink popular throughout Spain also emanates from this region and can be enjoyed freshly squeezed all over town.

Peniscola / Las Atalayas area

A truly beautiful and historic town situated on the Costa Del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) between Barcelona and Valencia. Peñiscola is famous for the 14th Century Papal castle of Papa Luna and the old town that surrounds it. To the north stretches several miles of perfect beach, family-friendly shallow waters and a wonderful esplanade. To the south are the fishing harbour and a small beach that leads on to La Sierra d’Irta a national park with many miles of natural coastline with small coves, fishing and diving.

All year round you are totally spoilt for choice with regard to the hundreds of cafes, bars and restaurants providing anything and everything from simple snacks to the finest quality cuisine. There is so much to see and do in Peñiscola; the castle and old town are an obvious must-see by day and night. The natural coastline and hillside walks to the south of Peñiscola (La Sierra d’Irta). Along north beach pedalo and jet ski hire, banana boat rides, cycle-hire and volleyball etc. Tourist train buses to four local excursions around the area – including the Las Atalayas complex!

In addition to the many traditional regional Spanish fiestas such as the world-famous Valencian Falles, Peñiscola hosts an International Film Comedy Festival and a Music Festival. Watch out for the fantastic firework displays from the Castle during the high season.

The Go Cart stadium on the CV-141 main road into Peñiscola (5 mins).
The nearby towns of Benicarlo and Vinaros with modern shopping areas and weekly street markets.

How to get there

Peñiscola enjoys an enviable microclimate that makes it possible to visit throughout the year. There are plenty of bargain flights available all year round from Ryan Air, Easy Jet and other carriers servicing Reus, Valencia and Barcelona. All options involve an enjoyable, panoramic coastal motorway journey of 1 hour, 90 minutes and 2 hours respectively.
Watch out for the opening of the new airport in Castellon (Aeroport Castello) - there should be plenty of bargain flights and it's just 25 minutes from Peniscola.
