History of the area
The peninsula of Peniche is a ancient island, joined to the mainland by a sandy isthmus, where lies the seaside town also called Peniche.
Close to the Atlantic Ocean, Peniche owes its growth mainly to fishing and canning industry.
The Berlengas islands, about six miles offshore from the peninsula, are part of the municipality. They are one of the world's first protected areas as a nature reserve. In summer, the islands can be visited by taking a ferryboat from Peniche.
Peniche, with its typical harbour, its white windmills, chapels and large sandy beaches has inspired famous artists like Maurice Boitel.
For millennia, the sea activities have been the engine of the local economy.
The village, Atouguia da Baleia, also has its history…
When in the XII century D. Afonso Heriques, first king of Portugal, gave these lands to the Corni brothers, they were known as Tauria. The name comes from the existence of a large number of bulls (Taurus/i)
São Leonardo's church is of the roman-gothic style, composed of three naves, the middle one standing. It has pointed arches and cylindrical columns surmounted by cubic capitals where there are fantastic animals, human heads, overlapping strings, etc. One of the side chapels has tiles from the seventeenth century, there is a 14th century bas-relief depicting the Nativity in white limestone, while the baptismal font is from 1562.
Other places of interest in the neighborhood : Óbidos with a castle village, Caldas da Rainha, golf courts in the Gold Atlantic and the Marriot hotel.
