Home description
Up a quite lane, this house is spacious, light and bright, with enough room to sleep 6-8 guests if necessary. The top of the house is great for kids with it's own shower room, like a loft apartment because it's so big, and the views from there are stunning. You can almost see the spire of the 5 star Marriot Hotel which is about 5 minutes by car, with one of the best golf courses in Europe, and voted 8th best in the world. It's so easy to relax in Baleal, yet your close enough to wander over the road to the pub or down the road for a great meal at great prices. And walk to the beach along by the cliffs for some stunning scenery.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
As you drive round the area you get beautiful views of a land and coast line that's not yet been trampled on by progress, but it's coming. The Marriot Hotel and Praia Del Ray with it's first class golf course is less than 10 minutes away by car, and at least another 3 big hotel chains are moving in. Obidos is about 15 minutes away, it's a World Heritage site, and full of morish history.Obidos Lagoon is a big attraction in the summer, I found the water there a bit cold, but my daughter loved it, so I sat outside a bar in beautiful Foz do Arelho over looking the beach while she swam. Caldas da Rainha is great for shopping, about 20 minutes away. Peniche is an old fishing town which is growing rapidly and developing into quite a busy shopping and eating area. Baleal where our house is has great surfing beaches and the world famous Supertubo beach is 5 minutes by car. Surfing schools are busy all year round, and the main Baleal beach has a lifeguard in the summer months which is great for families.
Peniche / Baleal area
There are some great restaurants in Baleal for meat and fish eaters, my partner loved them . I'm veggie and found they done lots of salard stuff and fab omlettes, better than mine anyway. The food is so cheap it's amazing compared to the UK. What is a bit strange though is don't go anywhere looking for a romantic restaurant because a lot have lights on and the telly, mainly with football, my partner was completely in heaven, no romance, lots of Arsenal and beer the same price as bottled water in the UK. There are ofter discos at the beach bars in Baleal. For people who like to relax out our back windows you see the farms and the coast, beautiful. Our neighbours are locals and twice a week a farmer comes up our lane in his lorry and toots his horn and sells his fruit, fresh and delicious. There's lots of lovely walks and you can hire bikes in Peniche and at the Marriot hotel if you feel like a bike ride around. The weather is nice mainly all year round we had Christmas dinner in the garden and in t shirts in January on the beach.
How to get there
Lisbon is the nearest airport, and there are lots of car hire companies there, but I normally look on the net before hand and get what ever the best deal is. It takes about 50 minutes from the airport. When you exit the Airport if you have a hire car that you have hired from the car rental compound, you turn right from the car hire exit, and go through a small tunnel, you come straight to a roundabout, take the first exit right, follow signs for A8 Oeste and A1 Norte, and keep going till you see signs for Peniche on the IP6. Word of caution you have to pay a toll which is €4.10, so have the change ready. When you arrive at the first toll you only collect a ticket, don't go through the toll lane marked with a green V, YOU COULD GET A HEAVY FINE. At the second toll you pay. Follow signs for Peniche, another word of caution the slip road comes up very quickly for Peniche and the IP6 so don't go to fast as it's a tight bend. Keep going on the IP6, towards Peniche until you get to the roundabout which says Baleal to your right (first exit) Follow towards Baleal, it's a coast road, it bends round to you right after about 1 mile, keep going up the road, look out on your right for the Sports bar, slow down then because on your left just pass that is my turning. You'll see a painting on a wall saying "Secret Surf" and a picture of a sun, your turn left there, go a very little bit up the lane, and turn left, by the farmers fields, and you will come to my house on the right. Casa Huckleberry, it's written on the front wall.

Further details indoors: A brand new three storey traditional house with central heating for the colder evenings. Sleeps up to 6-8 people. The top of the house is like a big open plan loft space, great for children & it has it's own children's size shower and toilet with great views for miles around and a secluded balcony area. There are 3 single beds up there with a double futon & lots of room to spare
Coming down the marble staircase from the attic entering the first floor bedrooms you will find one has a grey slate tiled en-suite shower room with views out to the sea, the fields, even the spire at Praia d'el Rey on the Marriott Hotel. The other two rooms have there own balconies, they all have fitted wardrobes & cupboards. There is also the family bathroom with bath & fitted shower
Coming down to the ground floor you immediately enter into the living room which is very light & spacious with stone flooring, easy to sweep clean with all the sand from the beach. The living room has a real fire with a glass front door which is made to keep shut once alight. There are two sets of patio doors in the living room which open out to the front of the property & that has a little patio area to sit at if someone wishes to. It's very quiet up our lane, you see the occasional surfer coming back from the beach or the local farmer selling his fruit and vegtables.
Back inside is the down stairs shower room & toilet, easy access from the beach to shower off the sand. Through to the open plan Kitchen & Dining room with lots of Kitchen utensils & enough tableware & glass to cater for ten people. The Dining table seats six but extras can be added on with the garden furniture which is stored in the garage.
Further details outdoors: In the garden is the patio area & barbeque. There is also outside lighting, to sit out under the stars and relax. You can reach the Marriott hotel by driving up the beach road at the back of the house in just over 5 minutes. The road way to Praia D'el Rey and the Marriott, is 10 minutes for great pool facilities from 10€, and the water park is 5 minutes away in season, which I think is around June. You can also hire bikes at the Marriot Hotel and then there's the golf, the course was voted 2nd best in Europe and 8th best in the world. Our house is right on the doorstep of all the windsurfing schools also, it's great for surfing at Baleal. We have internet or you can get it just over the road in the "Game Bar" which is a local bar with big screens for all the footbal matches and snooker and a snack bar. It's very family friendly and they make a great veggie omelette (I'm veggie)
There are lots of Golfing opportunities locally not just at the Marriott Hotel in Praia d'el Rey. Also at the Marriott besides the great indoor & outdoor pool, there's a fitness room as well as spa & leisure facilities, tennis courts, football pitch, you get alot of famous football teams go there to train. They are very welcoming at the Marriott
There is also tennis courts in Peniche. Down on Baleal beach the bars often have discos & live music. Caldas da Rainha is bigger than Peniche for shopping, about 20 minutes away passing the beautiful walled city, world heritage site of Obidos, a must visit for holiday makers
Obidos lagoon is a big attraction in the summer I like to view it from Foz do Arelho sitting in one of the relaxing bars especially at sunset. Sintra is also a magical place to visit with it's mixture of fairytale & gothic palaces, beautiful woodlands & streams. And of course you can't go to the Silver Coast and not visit Lisbon. Jumping on and off a plane at the airport is not good enough. A bus goes frequently through out the day to Lisbon for 7€ and the open bus tour of the city is highly recommended, as well as the Zoo with the dolphin and seal show, the kids will love that, and the Oceanarium at the Vasco de Gama centre is a must
And then there's the shopping. If you like to shop till you drop then go to Lisbon in your most comfortable shoes. It has everything from the old town & designer shops to the great big Columbo Shopping mall. On returning to Peniche on the bus relax in one of the bars or highly recommended fish restaurents for a beautiful meal and wine which won't cost you much more than a Mc Donalds (yuck) in the UK
The Portugese people of this area are warm welcoming people and normally from Peniche the Taxi driver only charges 4€ home, bliss.
Further details
I would need to be asked about pets? Strictly No smoking allowed on the property. Someone with a wheelchair would certainly be able to have access to the house because we have two french window doors at the front of the house, but the stairs could be tricky unless someone was prepared to bring the futon bed down stairs, it's a possibility, which I would be open to. Guestbook
When we were told it was a beautiful area with stunning view of the coast just 2 minutes walk or from the balcony, we though "heard that one before", but it really was stunning views and a most relaxing holiday. We're planning to go back next year to Fiona and Marks house and even look to buy something in that area ourselves. The Sullivan Family, Carol, Kevin and Kids.
