Peniche is a busy fishing town with a large harbor and some excellent seafood restaurants also has a gorgeous beach.
In the main square is the baroque Misericordia Church with a painted ceiling depicting scenes from the New Testament, but the town's most famous building is an imposing 16th century fortress. It was once used as a prison controlled by dictator Salazar's secret police to incarcerate political opponents and today houses a museum about local history.
There is a fantastic sandy beach nearby, Baleal, Baleal Beach, known for its tranquil waters.
All the coast arround Peniche has ideal surfing conditions, especially, Super-tubos, Lagido, Ferrel, Almagreira, etc.
To the west is Cabo Carvoeiro, a rugged cape with bizarrely shaped pinnacles and sea caves offering panoramic ocean views all the way to the islands of Berlengas.
Accessible by ferry and with wonderful cliff and sea views, the biggest island is a magical place declared a nature reserve. It is home to thousands of seabirds, and Fort in Berlengas Islands the azure waters are ideal for deep-sea fishing and diving.
The surrounding weird rock formations and spectacular grottoes can be explored on small boats that pass through a breathtaking sea tunnel called Furado Grande. Only a handful of fishermen are permitted to live here, but the 17th century São João Baptista Fort, built to defend the area from pirates, is now a basic hostel.
The Dinosaur Museum in Lourinha a 15 minute Bus Drive from our house is a great place to take the kids.
The Obidos Lagoon forms a large coastal inlet from the Atlantic offering sheltered swimming for families and great sailing and surfing opportunities. It has the best of both worlds: wild Atlantic vistas of crashing waves and impressive cliffs, coupled with family friendly sandy beaches. You can truly leave your worries behind when you're here.
The Lagoon is surrounded by a cool green forest nature reserve and is blessed with truly breathtaking views. Close by is the beautiful walled town of Obidos. The town was originally a wedding gift bestowed by the King of Portugal to his new Queen and it certainly feels a very romantic spot. The cobbled streets are packed with bars and restaurants, shops selling local crafts and wines. Idyllic white houses with terracotta roofs, overflowing with vivid flowers are in abundance.
