The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region
Southern Dalmatia is the smallest and the most southern part of Croatia it includes the area south of the Neretva River, the Peljesac peninsula and Dubrovnik which borders with Montenegro in the inlet of Boka Kotorska. The city of Dubrovnik is the main centre of the Dubrovnik – Neretva County as well as the main tourist centre of Southern Dalmatia and Croatia. Dubrovnik is a fascinating city full of historical and cultural heritage and lies under the protection of UNESCO. Its beautiful natural surroundings and well preserved architecture have made Dubrovnik one of the most visited cities of the Adriatic Sea. The Old Town of Dubrovnik is surrounded by a monumental wall which is 1940 m long and 25 m high. The oldest and most well-known street within the old town is Stradun. The Peljesac peninsula, along with Istria, is the largest peninsula on the Adriatic coast. - it is known for it's wine-production, shell ranching and fishing, as well as tourism. The larger towns on the peninsula are Orebic, Trpanj, Ston and Kuciste. Southern Dalmatia also has the islands of Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and the Elafiti islands. The island of Lastovo is separated from Korcula by the Lastovo canal. Among its lime-stone hills lie rocky fields as well as many caves, Raca being the largest. Along the north-eastern coast of Lastovo there are around 40 inhabited islands and cliffs which are called the Lastovo Archipelago.
Peljesac / Viganj area
Viganj is a quiet pretty village with a small harbour on the Peljesac Peninsula. It is a perfect place to relax and unwind with the crystal clear seas and sunny weather. Diving, windsurfing and a wide range of water sports are on your doorstep. Viganj is famous for its windsurfing and the National Championships are held here annually.
It is also an ideal place for cycling and hiking with many remote paths through pine woods and rocky hillsides or there are quiet roads and tracks along the coast. The more adventurous could visit the mountain excursion area to the north east of Viganj.
Bikes, boats and water sports equipment can be hired locally. Viganj also has a number of bars, restaurants and a supermarket.
There are lots of places to visit within easy reach of the apartment. Orebic is a picturesque town only 7 km away. It has the best beaches in Southern Dalmatia and some delightful bars, cafes and restaurants.
Boat trips are also available locally to the nearby archipelago of Peljesac Channel, consisting of 20 islets, some of which are the most breathtaking in the Adriatic. Badija, with its 15th century monastery, Vrnik, is famous for its two quarries of white stone, and Majsan with it's prehistoric remains, are among the best known islands in the archipelago. Most of the islands are uninhabited, the vegetation is still naturally lush, and the water is blue and crystal clear.
The island of Korcula is only 15 minutes away by foot ferry in Viganj or the car ferry in Orebic. it is one of the most beautiful and interesting Adriatic islands. . The old town of Korcula has narrow streets, beautiful churches and magnificent palaces. According to legend Marco Polo was born here and his house is still standing. It is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean.
Korcula produces Croatia's most famous white wine, the Posip
The Neretva delta is a one the best preserved wetlands in Europe. It is around 90 minutes away from Viganj on the mainland. It is a completely untouched natural environment offering shelter for numerous birds, fishes and other species.
The Peljesac peninsula is famous for its wines, among them "Dingac" and "Postup". These wines are very similar to American Zinfandel and they can be purchased directly from the producers.
