The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region
Peljesac peninsula can be explored independently or by organised excursions. Whichever you decide, it can be organised easily through local car, bicycle or boat hire, or by local tourist agencies which offer many interesting excursions. Peljesac peninsula offers beautiful scenery, excellent cuisine and wines, sports and adventure, nightlife, culture, stunning beaches and crystal clear sea water.
Some towns that you will come across on the peninsula are Viganj, Ston, Janjina, Trpanj and Trstenik. Where ever you decide to visit on the peninsula you will always be greeted with warmth and friendliness.
Viganj is a small village on the Southern slopes of Sveti Ilija mountain. Due to it`s geographical position it has, as well as Orebic, Kuciste and Perna, a very warm and pleasant climate. Viganj is a very popular place for people looking to do watersports particularly windsurfing, as Viganj is well known for hosting various Croatian, European and worldwide windsurfing competitions. Viganj has windsurfing schools, diving schools, some good restaurants and cafes and is in close vicinity of larger Orebic, where additional activities can be found.
Ston is a small, fortified town on Pejesac peninsula, well known for it`s medieval walls that circle the town itself. Ston is also famous for it`s oyster production and it`s still productive oldest and largest salt production facility in the Mediterranean. There are also many important building including palaces and churches built in Gothic and Renaissance styles.
Janjina is a village located in in the central part of the peninsula, along the main road from Ston to Orebic. It`s placed about 2km from Drace bay, a lovely little bay with clear sea water and small pebble beach. Janjina is a sleepy place, well known for it`s vineyards and olives.
Trpanj is a place located on the northern shore of the peninsula, about 11km away from Orebic. In the early days, Trpanj was built near a Roman villa of which fragments of mosaics and walls can still be seen in the old graveyard, as well as ruins of a medieval fortress that rise on the hill above the town. Trpanj is surrounded by nice beaches and pine trees as well as other Mediterranean vegetation and fresh water springs.
Trstenik is another small town about 25km from Orebic. From here you can get the passenger ferry to Mljet, where there is a national park.
Peljesac / Orebic area
Orebic is situated on the south western part of the Peljesac peninsula, in the county of Dubrovnik. This picturesque sunny townlet was the town of sea captains and sailors. Orebic offers the best of both worlds, being quiet and uncommercialised, but only ten minutes by boat or ferry away from one of the most popular islands in south Dalmatia, Korcula.
Orebic offers it`s visitors untouched nature and beauty. Orebic has many beautiful beaches, crystal clear sea water and offers many breathtaking views and stunning walks. Many activites and excursions are on offer including diving, snorkelling, water sports, buggy adventures, walking tours and tours to other cities and towns. The tourist agencies can also provide car, bicycle and boat hire. There are also several cafes, bars and restaurants serving great food and famous local wines. Orebic remains an attractive factor for tourists who like to be surrounded by beauty. On the hill above Orebic there is a Franciscan Monastery which offers impressive views. To this day, the ships passing through the Peljesac Channel sound their ship horns to greet the church of their patron saint and are replied by sounding of the monastery bells.
From Orebic, you can see about ten islands- the largest being Korcula, which has an ancient walled city centre built in the 10th century. Korcula also offers many restaurants, bars, shops and evening entertainment. You can reach Korcula by a very regular and reliable ferry service from Orebic, which will take approximately ten minutes.
