The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region
The Dubrovnik-Neretva County is the southernmost county in the Republic of Croatia. It encompasses an area of 1785 km2 and has about 127,000 residents.
Territorially, it is organized into 22 local self-administration units, divided into 5 cities (Dubrovnik, Korcula, Ploce, Metkovic and Opuzen) and 17 municipalities (Blato, Dubrovnik coastal region, Janjina, Konavle, Kula Norinska, Lastovo, Lumbarda, Mljet, Orebic, Pojezerje, Slivno, Smokvica, Ston, Trpanj, Vela Luka, Zazablje and Zupa Dubrovnik). The centre of the county is the city of Dubrovnik. During its tumultuous history, many nations and maritime forces met and battled in this areas: the Byzantines, Saracens, Croats, Normans, Venetians, small princedoms and kingdoms and the Austro-Hungarian state, as well as the Roman-Germanic Empire, Osman, Hapsburg and Napoleonic empires. In the midst of these dividing lines, a small city such as Dubrovnik succeeded in using political skill to win a complete form of self-administration, such that it acted as an independent state, the Dubrovnik Republic, for centuries. The specificity of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County is in its narrow and heterogeneous coastline, separated from the interior by a mountain range, and divided at Neum by the state border with Bosnia Herzegovina, while it has a natural connection to the interior and the northern Pannonic part of Croatia in the area of the Lower Neretva Valley. Thus, the territory of the county is comprised of two basic entities: the relatively narrow coastal area with its series of islands near the mainland and in the open sea (the most significant of which are the islands of Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and those in the Elaphite archipelago), and the Lower Neretva Valley with its coastline.
The Peljesac / Viganj area
The Peljesac Peninsula is the second largest Croatian peninsula, situated half way between the cities of Dubrovnik and Split. The peninsula comprises a surface of 355 km² and spreads in length over 65 km. It is connected to land by a narrow isthmus of Ston. The territory of the Orebic comprises 14 municipalities and spreads from municipality Trstenik to municipality Loviste and includes vast territory with sandy and sunny beaches, a coastline which is low and well protected from bora winds, bathed in sun and much warmer than the northern side.
Viganj is a wonderfully picturesque place that is comfortably situated on the Peljesac peninsula. Viganj belongs to the Orebic municipality which in turn belongs to the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Viganj is located in a large cove west of Cape St. Liberan.
Above Viganj there are hamlets Basina, Kovacevici, Kraljevica village, Sapetino village Podac and Dol. The highest point of this charming place is occupied by cape St. John, with the old church near the road, and the remains of the old artillery position of the Austro-Hungarian Navy below it. This location is the final point of the Peljesac channel.
Viganj is place with long maritime tradition especially proud of its carefully cultivated and maintained orchard and botanical garden rich with variety of fruit trees and plants that were brought to Viganj by sailors from Peljesac. In addition to the botanical garden and orchard during your stay in Viganj you should visit Cape of St. John and the homonymous church with a beautiful view of the Peljesac channel, a hill resort St. Ilija and village Nakrana with exceptional panoramic view.
Peljesac has a long tradition of wine producing and growing grapes, olives, fruits and vegetables, so you can be certain that during your stay in beautiful Viganj you will enjoy unlimited amounts of traditional Dalmatian products such as dried figs, homemade olive oil and wine of superior quality. Viganj will spoil you with its gentle and pleasant climate, attractive pebble beaches, lush vegetation and rich shade of lush pine trees and olive groves. Viganj will also be interesting destination for all the lovers of extreme water sports because every summer here is held the windsurfing competition that gathers surfers from all around Croatia as well as from nearby countries.
