Anna & David, a Greek-Irish couple renovated this Greek stone mansion over 5 years. It is located in the Pelion peninsula (location of Mama Mia) an area of outstanding natural beauty rising from the Aegean and forms an ideal & base for exploring a very diverse part of untouched Greece in comfort.

The house was built by a Greek tobacco merchant in 1884 & has a rich history with many items displayed in the house. It was renovated using local materials recreating the original house exactly in the Neoclassic style in which it was built. Additions for modern comfort were en-suite bathrooms and a large relaxation area with 5 person hot tub & tropical rain shower. A fresh homemade breakfast is served using local produce and WiFi is free. There are 7 double rooms & 1 triple. 2 of the rooms have interconnecting doors to accommodate family. Extra beds may be provided (maximum 1 per room) & baby cots are available for free.

Portaria is one of the 25 villages dotted throughout Pelion peninsula. A popular tourist destination for Greek visitors for over 60 years it is less well known outside Greece & well suited for families & groups wanting something more than the classic beach holiday. Although some of Greece's most famous beaches do lie at the foot of Pelion at 20 minutes drive, it is also possible to do horse riding, mountain biking, sailing etc. it is best known for the many forested paths enjoyed by hikers who return regularly throughout the year. Our recommendation is to do what the locals do which is to come for the scenery, the local food on offer at the restaurants which is very good value, to just enjoy the many spectacular views & do some touring of the many pretty villages. There are beautiful walking paths close by not to be missed & visits to the local crafts shops famous for producing sugared fruits and ornamental 'worry beads' as well as decorated local churches are of interest. A shopping trip to the Port city of Volos, home of Argonauts is worthwhile and for more activity the location is great for horse riding or mountain biking tours which are organised on request. Probably the best thing about the area is its diversity so its really up to the guest who has a very wide choice in the type of holiday they would like.
