Casa Amarilla is a dream three bedroom home with airy cathedral ceilings set in 6 acres of tropical gardens in the 150 acre Finca Estrella; home to monkeys, sloths, tayras and a myriad of birds and butterflies. The heart of the house has to be the vast terrace with its brightly coloured hammocks and leather rocking chairs. Begin your day by watching the lines by the shore indicate 'surf's up' and witnessing the rainforest come to life in the morning light then let it draw to a close with fairyland sunsets, fabulous light shows and finally star-gazing across the gulf.

The 18m pool with children's pool and barbeque rancho surrounded with rainforest flowers to attract hummingbirds, toucans and scarlet macaws is the perfect place to while away a morning or afternoon. Take the stone painting set with you and discover your creativity from a poolside hammock.

'Patas blancas' is available, with a guide, for horse treks to local waterfalls or beaches or simply wildlife/bird/butterfly watching around the finca.

Further details indoors

Both the master bedroom and guest bedroom have private terraces and king size beds. There is an additional single bed in the master bedroom and a further king size mattress can be placed on the floor to accommodate 9 guests. The third bedroom (children's room) has twin beds. The large master bedroom has its own individual walk-in closet and a second walk-in closet is shared by the guest room and children's' room.

The main family bathroom has a jacuzzi bathtub and a walk-in shower. There is an additional small cloakroom with hand-basin and toilet and an outdoor raindrop shower which is great for washing sand off after a trip to the beach.

The huge main room has the most amazing views of the gulf and the Osa Peninsula and has lightweight dining furniture that can be used inside or outside.

All windows are bug-screened.

Floors are either cool slate tiles or hardwood laid in beautiful designs and the doors are works of art themselves: hand-carved with rainforest views. There are fans in all rooms and the bedrooms also have air-conditioning, although it is rarely needed.

Further details outdoors

A wooden terrace wraps around the back of the house and you can chill out in the comfortable rocking chairs and hammocks whilst you admire the spectacular view.

The 18m swimming pool is a two minute walk from Casa Amarilla and is shared between our four houses. A waterfall flows from the small children's pool into the main pool when the pump is operating. There is a rancho with hammocks, dining furniture and a gas barbeque. The umbrella for the table is stored in the pool bathroom; there is also a refreshing outdoor shower and lights in the rancho and around the pool for evening use.

The Province of Puntarenas region

Puntarenas is the southernmost province of Costa Rica with a climate that is hot and humid for much of the year. Its rainy season peaks in October and, unlike other northern areas, leaves the rainforest a lush green for the rest of the year. The rainforest ends where the beautiful wild beaches begin. It is one of the least developed regions in Costa Rica and the wildlife hasn't been scared away by development and isn't limited to the national parks. Indigenous people can be often seen in their bright tribal gowns. There is a fabulous range of outdoor activities, from water-sports to gold panning and horse-riding to sport fishing. Panama is close enough for a day trip as is Wilson Botanical Gardens in San Vito and Kobo chocolate finca on the Osa Peninsula.

In the green season, the rains normally occur for an hour or so in the afternoon before the sun comes out again.

Pavones

For surfers, the surf can be up at any time of the year although the rainy season is usually best. Kite-surfing is at its best between December and April and you can stand-up paddle-board - dolphin spotting as you glide along - all year round. The nearest beach, Pilon, has a great surf break - usually quiet - and the famous world-class Pavones break is a 20 minute drive away. You can see the lines on the water from Finca Estrella.

To boost your spirit and fitness level, yoga classes in Pavones- 20 minutes away - are a must. Turtles nest on the local beaches, hike past giant bamboos waterfalls, take a cooling swim in the refreshing Cuervito river, a lazy boat trip down the Rio Coto from Zancudo or dolphin and whale spotting as you zip across to the Osa Peninsula, to where Corcovado National Park is located, is unforgettable or boogie board at the shallow sandy waters of Zancudo beach. Boat trips can also be arranged to the Orchid Gardens, through the mangroves, to the Wild Animal Refuge or to the Zipline Canopy tour, kayak the Rio Coto or you can even water ski....

If fishing is your thing then take a trip with one of the local fishermen or go sportfishing from Zancudo or Golfito, making sure to sample the quesadillas at Banana Bay Marina (Golfito) when you get back! If you want to eat it but don't want to catch it yourself then a visit to the fishermen (Macho Pulpo and others) at local Pilon beach, 10 minutes away, is the thing to do.

For wildlife, take a walk/ride with Freddy or Enrique early in the morning or late afternoon around the extensive finca bird/butterfly/monkey/wildlife watching amidst the exotic flowers and fruit trees - mangoes, papayas, cashews, a wonderful type of lychee, coconuts, guavas, cacao (yes you can make chocolate!), ice cream beans, citrus trees, or just sit on the terrace/balcony following the mournful cry of the toucan at sunrise and sunset. Watch for the giant blue Morpho Azul butterfly flap past, or the myriad of smaller colourful varieties crossing your path. A squawk overhead will be a scarlet macaw, look out for them on the wild almond tree above the pool. Sloths are spotted often, munching away on their favourite leaves. Head to the local waterfalls - walk or take 'Patas Blancas' - and lunch in the cool shade on mossy logs before taking the flunge or even clamber up the rocks to stand under the waterfalls' refreshing torrent. The 'pozo' - swimming hole - at the Cuervito River is a must on a hot day. Jump off rocks or fallen logs and relax in the perfect surroundings listening to the jungle 'music'. Gold has been found in the local rivers so let us know if you would like to try your hand at gold-panning.

On rest days, the hammocks by the beautiful 18m swimming pool await. Swing serenely listening to the toucans, clicking butterflies, the buzzing of hummingbirds' wings, the parrots' chatter - over 200 kinds of birds have been spotted at the finca. If you fancy being arty then you can use the house paints to decorate the fruits of any beach-combing labors - ornate seeds, smooth stones, even discarded flip-flips or let Grace paint jungle flowers on your toe nails so you can take a bit of your vacation home with you.

At certain times of the year the bull fiestas at nearby Conte and Naranjo are worth a visit as are the cabalgatas where locals show off their prowess on horseback. Eat churros (stick donuts) and sample local fayre from the buzzing stalls.

Of the local towns worth a visit - Paso Canoas is the Panama border town, an hour away, good for chaotic duty free shopping is that grabs your interest.
