Bruges is situated just south of Pau in the Pyrenees Atlantique. The Pyrenees-Atlantique is made up of the Bearn and Basque country both areas have strong traditions in their architecture and agriculture, and cuisine and dialects. Pau is a beautiful city with a lot of tall elegant architecture from the Victorian times when rich British used to visit the area for the temperate winter climate and spas. There is a chateau of the French King Henri VI, the boulevard with fantastic views of the Pyrenean range and parks to wander through, along with some great shopping. The mountains of the area offer numerous ski resorts as good as the alps only not as busy or expensive. Coastal resorts of Biarritz and St-Jean de luz are elegant and great for surfing.
