The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

There is nowhere on the map officially called 'Southwest France'. But this is a large and fascinating corner of the country with an extraordinarily varied landscape: there are lushly wooded river valleys, vertiginous gorges, lakes, icy mountain tops, beaches, bays outsize sand dunes undulating fields or ripening sunflowers, maize and endless vineyards.

This varied landscape is dotted with shuttered villages sleeping in the sun and yet the more vibrant cities of Toulouse, Bordeaux and Pau are all within easy reach of your accommodation.

The region is steeped in history with its fine Chateaus and Bastides towns and this together with the breath-taking scenery, diverse wildlife, flora and fauna and many outdoor pursuits make this an ideal holiday destination for families and experienced travellers alike.

Nameless it maybe, but Southwest France lacks nothing else.

Pau

Crouseilles is nestled in rolling countryside filled with vineyards and fields of vivid sunflowers and towering maize. and yet despite its tranquil setting the area offers some great days out with numerous local and international festivals.

For those amongst you who enjoy walking and cycling then you will find numerous quite leafy lanes where tractors are the only traffic you are likely to encounter. Canoeing, kayaking are both available locally if however you want something more exhilarating white water rafting is available in the Lourdes area, a town more famous for Bernadette's vision of 'The Lady in White' in 1858.

Tennis and a open air pool can be found in Madiran, along with its Norman Church, bar and exclusive restaurant. Horse riding is also available locally.Further a field a 18 hole golf course is just a 30min drive away.

Enjoy the local food including Fois Gras and Brebis cheese at the numerous restaurants in the area, or simply drop into one of the many Chateau's to sample the local wines.

Take time out to visit one of the numerous local fetes or the two week international Jazz festival at Marciac with hosts an impressive line up of world famous artists. If you prefer Latin dance or Country and Western music summer events are also held in the area.
