Home description
This tastefully renovated, stone farmhouse is suitable for up to 8 adults with 4 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms arranged over 3 floors, with private terrace and garden and plenty of parking space. It is ideally situated for GOLF, fly fishing, wine tasting, walking and events such as Pau Grand Prix 3000, Pau Historique Grand Prix, Pau International Horse Show.
The 18th century 'Les Vieux Chenes' (the old oaks),situated between PAU and BIARRITZ, has been carefully restored to offer quality accommodation to visitors. For those choosing to fly it is well served by Ryanair and Easyjet low cost flights from LONDON, BRISTOL, BIRMINGHAM, DUBLIN. It is well away from noisy roads (guests are often surprised it is so peaceful - lie by the pool and all you can only hear the buzzards crying as they circle above). However, the house is also surprisingly convenient to nearby small historic towns (NAVARRENX, MONEIN), elegant city of PAU, the Pyrenees mountains, the Pyrenees National Park, the atlantic coast towns of BIARRITZ and ST JEAN de LUZ as well as local restaurants, markets, shops and festivals.
With 4 excellent sized bedrooms & 3 nicely fitted bath/shower rooms (2 en suite) plus open-plan, well fitted kitchen, dining area and sitting area (3 sofas, 2 armchairs, piano).
25 mins from the chic and vibrant boulevards of PAU one hour from BIARRITZ (beaches &surfing) less than one hour to SKIING resorts but only 5 mins to shops and restaurants.
All bedrooms have marvellous views over distant high Pyrenees.
The private garden and terrace (with large stone built BBQ) overlooks the Pyrenees mountains and offers an excellent opportunity to have breakfast outside in the sunshine. The warm evenings are great for relaxing in the garden and cooking produce purchased at a local market or visiting a local restaurant. Passing through a gateway in the old garden wall you find the large in-ground POOL (14mx6m overall) .
The owner lives behind a courtyard in the adjacent property, however as the houses face different directions both are quite private from each other. There are no other rental properties here.
The area is ideal for GOLF (nr Pau, the oldest course in mainland Europe), outstanding FLY FISHING (salmon & trout river very nearby), Walking, WhiteWater Rafting, Wine Tasting, Antique & Bric-a-Braq Hunting, Beaches, SkIING (alpine and cross country, a number of resorts are nearby).
Deluxe evening meals are available on request. Full details/menus of these are left in the farmhouse for you.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Pyrenees Atlantiques region
This region is a favourite for the French and only recently been re-discovered by English visitors although our Victorian ancestors were very familiar with what the area offered favouring both Pau and Biarritz due its climate here in the far SW of France. There are so many places to see, but some of the major ones are
Navarrenx and Sauveterre for magnificent views of the river below from mediaeval ramparts Salies de Bearn - with its thermal baths, the many local VINEYARDS, the National horse stud in Pau Biarritz and the atlantic beaches for swimming and surfing St Jean de Luz -pretty fishing port , St Jean de Pied Port - pilgrims town Jaca ( citadel town) in Spain.
Pau area
LUCQ de BEARN (2 mins) is a listed village with beautiful church, shop and post office
MONEIN ( 5 mins) a Jurancon wine centre, many vineyards are open to the public. It has a cathedral like church, tourist office, restaurants, bars, shops, market, supermarket and banks
NAVARRENX ( 10 mins) Mediaeval walled town whose fortifications are worth exploring has also restaurants, bars and shops
PAU- with its elegant boulevards, including the famous Boulevard des Pyrenees and famous chateau with some of the worlds best tapestries has vibrant cafes and many restaurants

Prices from £35 per person per day. Please see our website.
FISHING- The Gave d'Oloron and the Gave de Pau are both nearby which have seen both the World and French championships for salmon and trout fishing. The season runs from March 15th to Sep 15th. Fishing licences are inexpensive and can be purchased for a single day or the holiday duration. These rivers provide some of Europe's best river fishing at a fraction of the licence cost in the UK. Ideal for the elusive salmon as they are fast flowing and a relatively short distance from source to the sea. Catered short breaks are available prices from £35 per person per day please see our website for more details.
ANTIQUE HUNTING- There are a number local antique shops and bric-a-braq places (maps provided) as well as various fairs throughout the year. We also run special weekends see our website.
WINE TASTING- The region has the famous Jurancon wine favoured by many top worldclass restaurants. It is made from the Gros Manseng and the Petit Manseng grape variety which is only allowed under the Appellation laws to be grown in this specific region. It produces an excellent dry white from the gros manseng and sweet apertif or dessert wine made from either variety or a mixture of the two, though experts consider the very best is made with just the Petit Manseng. It is not an inexpensive wine starting at 5 euro a bottle and rising to about 70 euros for some. Many vineyards are open to the public and sell wine, as do the local shops.
Red wine locally is from the Madiran and Saint Mont regions ( north of PAU)
Skiing - There are several resorts within one hour. All equipment can be rented by the day, and lift passes are very reasonable.

Guestbook
'I just love waking up and seeing the mountains...I've had a wonderful time'- J.G from Devon
Many thanks for a wonderful stay in this great house, the facilities are great and there's planty of space for all of us. The meal on arrival was excellent and the birthday cake for 'trout' (my mother-in-law) was fanastic. A great place to have a peaceful break and get away from it all. Pool was great, hoping to come back again soon. Bonner family, UK ' It is so peaceful here, can't remember when I slept so well... I really loved St Jean de Luz with its cafes, boutique shops and street artists around the port. ' A B nr London
Many, many thanks for such a lovely place to stay for our week of househunting. If only we could have found somewhere like this. I'm sure we will be back for more. The Mundi family, London
Thank you for a wonderful stay- such a beautiful place- Nero family, Ontario, Canada
