About the home

This tastefully renovated, 18th century stone farmhouse is situated between Biarritz (60mins) and Pau (20mins) with very large in-ground POOL with panoramic views in the far SW of France, near Spanish border, benefitting from both mountain and coastal easy access.

* STANDARD CONFIGURATION - 4 bedrooms with high quality mattresses and Egyptian cotton linen + 3 bathrooms arranged over 3 floors as standard configuration

* SMALL PARTY - 2 bedrooms ( 1 king- Opera, 1 large twin- Theatre) + 1 en suite shower room + 1 family bath/shower room. Top floor unused.

- private terrace, private garden and plenty of parking space.

GOLF - we lend our guests golf clubs/trolleys (note on your booking form and we can advise re booking tee times/course selection)
CYCLING- Try the local hills and Cols (many appear in the Tour du France)
RIVER- salmon and trout fly fishing and Whitewater rafting in our local well known river
WINE TASTING- Jurancon wine region- neighbouring vineyards ,
AND MORE walking and events such as Pau Grand Prix 3000, Pau Historique Grand Prix, Pau International 3 Day Event Horse Trials, and SKIING.

Whilst being very peaceful situated on the hilltop above historic Lucq de Bearn, it is easy to reach PAU and many other places of interest.

All bedrooms have views over distant high Pyrenees.

NO OTHER RENTAL PROPERTIES ON SITE . One of the owners does sometimes discreetly use the pool.

First night arrival supper option see below. Deluxe evening meals served nearby in a 17th century dining room are also available during your stay should you so choose. You can have your own chef and private restaurant, menus & booking info of these are left in the farmhouse for you to consider.

Secure garaging for motorbikes /classic cars/racing bikes available at no extra charge. Must be pre-booked.

The accommodation comprises up to 4 excellent-sized bedrooms with good quality mattresses and Egyptian cotton linens.

Theatre - Twin (two smaller (120cm/4ft) antique double beds), antique mahogany chest of drawers, wardrobe, armchair

Bedrooms for Larger groups on Top Floor:
Gallerie - Twin (standard singles), beamed ceiling, large wardrobe en suite bathroom (no shower)
Cinema - Double, beamed ceiling, wardrobe

The bedrooms have bedside tables, bedside lights, all have additional armchairs or chairs..They also have fans for those warm summer nights and central heating for the winter.

Additionally, there is a large family bathroom with bath, shower, handbasin and WC. Downstairs provides:
- fully fitted kitchen
- large farmhouse dining table & chairs
- comfortable lounge area with sofas, armchairs, fireplace, flat screen satellite TV and DVD and PIANO. There is a selection of books, DVDs and games in the house which you are welcome to use.

Further details outdoors:
The POOL (14m x 6m overall) which has extra large Roman steps is great place for cooling down and sipping a drink or two! There are wooden sun loungers with cushions and parasols around the pool.

Your private garden has a lovely old 18th century well house, large, old oak trees providing welcome shade in the heat of the day. There is a private stone terrace, with large terracotta planted pots, outside wooden furniture, parasol and a large stone built barbecue. Both the house and garden overlook the Pyrenees mountains and offers an excellent opportunity to have breakfast outside in the sunshine. The warm evenings are great for relaxing in the garden and cooking produce purchased at a local market, visiting a local restaurant or making use of the personal chef option.

Passing through a gateway in the old garden wall you find the large in-ground POOL (14mx6m overall) .
with views of almost 360degrees - mountains and valleys with the Jurancon vineyard .

You will often have EXCLUSIVE USE of the pool as the only other occasional user is one of the owners who live behind a courtyard in the adjacent property, however as the houses face different directions both are quite private from each other.

There are NO other rental properties here.

There is plenty of parking. MOTORBIKES & Classic cars can be secured in a locked garage, if desired (MUST be prebooked). Storage is available for golf clubs & bicycles. There are several sets of golf clubs available for guests to borrow free of charge on request. There is local bike hire in the nearby small town of Navarrenx.

LUCQ de BEARN (2 mins) is a listed village with beautiful church

MONEIN ( 5 mins) a Jurancon wine centre, many vineyards are open to the public. It has an important cathedral-like church (guided tours of tower giving access to spectacular roof structure), tourist office, restaurants, bars, shops, market, supermarket and banks. Offers horse riding, wine-tasting.

NAVARRENX ( 10 mins) Mediaeval walled town whose fortifications are well-worth exploring has also restaurants, bars and shops,supermarkets etc. Offers river rafting, tennis, bastide fortifications,riding.

PAU (20mins)- with its elegant boulevards, including the famous Boulevard des Pyrenees and famous chateau with some of the worlds best tapestries has vibrant cafes and many restaurants. Oldest european golf course.


ACTIVITIES:

GOLF- Pau-Billiere 1856 golfcourse, oldest course outside the UK, is on most golfer's must playlist with its traditional course layout and wonderful old clubhouse. Other courses are:
Pau Artiguelouve - 18 hole parkland course,
Seignosse- rated as France's no 1 course
Moliets - regularly holds challenge tour events
Lourdes- possibly the most scenic course we've found anywhere
Hossegor- old coastal course - along with numerous other excellent courses all within approx 1 hour

CYCLING & CYCLO_SPORTIVES - this is an outstanding to enjoy the hills and valleys, with near deserted roads as well as conquering various cols and mountains on the Tour de France

FISHING- The Gave d'Oloron and the Gave de Pau are both nearby which have seen both the World and French championships for salmon and trout fishing. The season runs from March 15th to Sep 15th. Fishing licences are inexpensive and can be purchased for a single day or the holiday duration. These rivers provide some of Europe's most attractive river fishing at a fraction of the licence cost in the UK.

ANTIQUE HUNTING- There are a number local antique shops and bric-a-braq places (maps provided) as well as various fairs throughout the year. We also run special weekends see our website.

WINE TASTING- The region has the famous Jurancon wine favoured by many top worldclass restaurants. It is made from the Gros Manseng and the Petit Manseng grape variety which is only allowed under the Appellation laws to be grown in this specific region. It produces an excellent dry white from the gros manseng and sweet apertif or dessert wine made from either variety or a mixture of the two, though experts consider the very best is made with just the Petit Manseng. It is not an inexpensive wine starting at 5 euro a bottle and rising to about 100 euros for some. Many vineyards are open to the public and sell wine, as do the local shops.
Red wine locally is from the Madiran and Saint Mont regions ( north of PAU)

Skiing - There are several resorts within one hour. All equipment can be rented by the day, and lift passes are very reasonable.

“Quality accommodation and service helped us have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday” We stayed at Les Vieux Chenes for a week in early June and found it a most relaxing experience. We had booked dinner for the first evening to save having to look for a restaurant. This was a good decision as the meal was most enjoyable, good value for money and a great start to our holiday. Additionally, the provision of a "Welcome Pack" of wine, beer and snacks certainly did make us feel welcome. The rooms were spacious and well-decorated. Overall, the house, while very traditional, has plenty of mod-cons. Even though the weather wasn't brilliant while we were there, we still managed some good walks, both directly from the property and further afield. We also found this holiday rental very handy for local towns, both for shopping and sight-seeing. Pau was especially attractive for both these activities. There are also vineyards and cheese producers nearby, a couple of which we visited. This is a lovely part of France with more attractions than we had time to visit this time. We will certainly be back and would be happy to stay at Les Vieux Chenes again.
