About this location
The Sicily region
Sicily's sunny, dry climate, scenery, cuisine, history, and architecture attract many tourists from mainland Italy and abroad. The tourist season peaks in the summer months, although people visit the island all year round. Mount Etna, the beaches, the archaeological sites, and the two major cities of Catania and Palermo are the big tourist destinations as are the Aeolian Islands, Erice, Cefalù, Syracuse, and Agrigento.
Marina di Patti is situated in a tranquil gulf of crystal clear water, surrounded by beautiful mountainous countryside. There is a real sense of community with friendly people in a small centre of fishing, boating, swimming, and water sports. You can even hang glide from the hills. The main centre is Patti Citta on the hill above (15.000 inhabitants), which has a beautiful Norman Cathedral and typical medieval streets. Patti Marina is a very attractive place, both for the beauty of its landscape and for its archaeological points of interest. Directly across from Patti's shore you can see the Aeolian Islands and you can visit these by boat. Lipari is the largest island of the Archepelago, next Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Filicudi ad Alicudi.
Patti has many local points of archaeological interest: (300 mt) a newly discovered site, "Villa Romana", IV Century AD, with mosaics; Tindari (9 Km) - a Greco-Roman archaeological site with an ancient Greek theatre (still showing classic performances from May through August,) and also the most recent discovery of an ancient street "il decumano."
The Black Madonna resides in Tindari's church (9 KM) and one of the best restaurants with a great ambience (and not too costly) overlooks the sea here.
Below Tindari is a nature preservation sanctuary, "Laghetti di Marinello" of salt water lakes. You can also go to the nearby Nebrodi Regional Park. If you like cities, you can visit Palermo (180 km) for local craft; Santo Stefano (45 minutes by car) for artisan made ceramics, Caltagirone (2 hours by car) for an international atmosphere, and Taormina, the most alluring famously known sea cliff town.
Cefalu (1.5 hours by car) is a charming distinctly characteristic medieval sea town. Patti is also close (less than an hour by car) from the town of San Marco D'annunzio with its twenty two churches.
Patti is still relatively undiscovered by tourists yet Patti and Patti Marina (2-3km away) are beautiful places to spend a relaxing holiday with lovely sand and rocky beaches and great bars, restaurants to enjoy, caves to visit and of course the islands to explore by boat. Be quick Patti won't stay a secret for long.
Things to see in Patti...
Ruins of Tindari
Remains of a Roman Villa (3rd century AD)
Cathedral (10th century), housing the sepulchre of Adelasia Countess of Sicily
In the immediate area (Patti Marina) there are several local bars serving good coffee, drinks, gelati and granita; restaurants, pizzarias, gelaterias, groceries, pasticerias (fresh breads and sweets.) Also there are three Lidos (outside bar/disco on the beach)in the gulf, and two discos (1km and 500 metres).
