The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

The Le Marche region is located half way down Italy's eastern coast. With 180 km coastline of enticing beaches on the Adriatic Sea to the east, and the gently rolling foothills of the Sibillini mountains in the west, it provides an enchanting landscape. It is know as 'undiscovered Italy' It is rich in history with many areas of historical importance, cultural attractions, beautiful scenery and natural phenomena such as the Frasassi Caves. The countryside is not dissimilar to that which you would find in Tuscany or Umbria (but without the steep prices). It has many beaches to explore from the Conero National Park near Ancona to the more formal at Porto Recanati or Civitanova. Frasassi Caves - This 35 kilometre long wonderland of limestone caverns and caves is only 55 minutes North in the Frassi Gorge. Monte Conero and Beaches - Just south of Ancona the white cliffs of Monte Conero plunge straight into the sea, forming the northern Adriatic's most spectacular and enjoyable stretch of coastline. It is easily accessible, with the major resorts of Portonovo, Sirolo and Numana all within easy reach of La Serenissima. Civitanova Marche - Attractive seaside resort and colourful fishing port with a long gravel beach and promenade. An open air market is held in the centre of the town on Saturday mornings selling everything but particularly good for leather shoes.San Severino Marche - 12 kilometres north of Tolentino this pretty 6th century town features a blend of Renaissance and Medieval buildings and an elliptical town square, Piazza del Popolo, surrounded by porticoes.

Paterno, Marche area

Tolentino is a large thriving medieval town 10 minutes drive away. It is a mecca for pilgrims visiting the shrine of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino.
Worth visiting. Macerata - World famous for its annual open air opera festival in July and August, and is only 18 minutes to the south of La Serenissima.
Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Sibillini mountains by hill walking in the summer or skiing during the winter. During May and June there are some very rare and beautiful flowers to be seen in the foothiills. Jesi - To the North this town has an attractive blend of old and modern, with it's 14th century walls and lively cultural attractions. It is also the centre of the world renowned 'Verdicchio' wine producing region. Porto St Elpido - A long stretch of beach with bars and restaurants and unspoilt bits in between is the nearest beach with very easy parking. Porto San Giorgio - This is a small fishing and sailing port with a long sandy beach, palms, pines, oleanders and a sprinkling of Art Deco villas. Loreto - The most important religious centre of the Le Marche region, with the sanctuary of the Santa Casa, (holy home) which is visited by numerous pilgrims. According to legend this was brought here by the angels in 1294 and is covered by a dome and protected by marble.

The grounds are approximately 2000 sq metres and most is set to lawn with many fruit trees, nut trees and 32 olive trees. The house is not overlooked (the nearest other property being 1/2 kilometre away) it is 1 kilometre from the road, access being via a well constructed natural road.

There is no passing traffic as the house is at the end of the road, the farmer is the only person to occasionally use it to access the fields.

The swimming pool is 5 metres x 10 metres . It is surrounded by a paved area running onto grass which is ideal for sunbathing.

There are plenty of chairs, sun loungers and parasols, plus a collection of beach balls, lilos and arm bands for all to use and many areas to get away for a quiet sunbathe or read in a hammock suspended between the olive trees.

There is a pool house with kitchen and loo so you don't have far to go for a cool drink.

Guestbook for La Serenissima

La Serenissima is a beautiful house and each room wonderfully decorated and furnished. We also enjoyed the home cinema system when it was raining and the fridge freezer was well used. Even dining and going to bed by candlelight was fun. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing house with us. Hilary - Sept 2006
