The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region

The main attractions of this area of France are the tranquillity, the countryside, the friendly people and its proximity to both historic and tourist sites.
The surrounding countryside is gentle and full of quiet lanes for walking or cycling which seem to go on forever.
Parthenay’s medieval St Jacques district is just 15 minutes away and is quite magnificent with over 100 timbered houses - from the 15th century – sitting alongside well-preserved ramparts. There are a variety of markets in all the surrounding towns.
Poitiers is just half an hour away, capital of the region with a vast architectural heritage with great shopping and many traditional squares, bars and restaurants. There is an annual Passeurs D’Images (Film Festival) between June and August.
The many attractions of the Vienne are within easy reach, amongst them La Vallée des Singes, Le Vieux Cormenier, La Planète de Crocodiles and L’ île aux Serpents. Try Les Caves de Norée or visit attractive Chauvigny and Montmirillon (La Cité de L’Ecrit).
Very local is Vasle’s own tourist attraction – the Mouton Village – a small park featuring over 20 different breeds of sheep with visitors strolling round with an audio guide.
Within an hour’s drive is Pescalis, the premier fishing resort in France. Spread over 150 hectares and providing everything a fisherman and friends/family could want from serious fishing, competitions, walks, shows and restaurants. There are many other fishing lakes spread around the region too.
Even closer, is the more sophisticated Futuroscope theme park which is just 40 minutes away, north of Poitiers. An all year round attraction with rides, shows and video attractions in a very attractive park with fantastic architecture and a fabulous firework show every evening.
The region’s other major tourist attraction is Puy du Fou, situated about 90 minutes away this is a unique experience combining historic recreations, battles, walks, shows and a night-time spectacular. Very much a full day out.
On a much smaller scale there are numerous chateaux, historical sites, museums, gardens and farms to visit. We can also recommend a day out at the Marais Poitevin – or Venise Verte.
Golfers are very well catered for as we have one of the region’s best complexes at Chateau des Forges just ten minutes away. There are three nine hole courses to play then a very nice 19th hole bar and restaurant. There are four other courses within an hour’s drive.
The Parthenay / Vasles area
Vasles is the nearest town just 5 minutes’ drive away; it has a Vival mini-market, boulangerie/patisserie, bank, pharmacy, hairdressers, petrol station, post office and bar/restaurant. The Mouton Village and its Gift Boutique are in the centre of town along with the large, reconstructed Eglise St Radegonde de Vasles.
