The Poitou-Charentes region
Area: 25 809 km2
Population: About 1 622 800
Climate: Oceanic tempered
Capital city: Poitiers
Departments: 16 - Charente (Angoulême), 17 - Charente-Maritime (La Rochelle), 79 - Deux-Sèvres (Niort), 86 - Vienne (Poitiers)
On the Atlantic coast, between the châteaux and the castles of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes, one of the sunniest parts of the French western coast. Its mild climate - 2,250 hours of sunshine per year - makes it desirable to visit anytime from early spring to late autumn. A 300 mile-long coastline with fine sandy beaches, backed by fragrant pine forests, lively resorts such as La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide attractions to tempt everyone from the beachcomber to the bathing-belle.
Inland, the scene is one of serenity, with vast horizons and wooded valleys, the Poitou fens and Marais Poitevin, the soothing tranquillity of canals, the valley of Vienne, the foothills of Charente and the Cognac vineyards.
(this information is from the website francekeys)
Gourgé is situated in the Deux Sèrves Department, Poitou-Charantes Region. It is one of the most historical and picturesque regions of France. It is well know for its cultured walking and cycling trails along the Thouet Valley, also for the fabulous goat's cheeses that are made in the district.
13 - 15th Century Châteaux are a common sight, and in the village of Gourgé is one of the oldest Churches in France, Saint-Hilaire, which was built on the old roman way linking Poitiers to Nantes. The site was first occupied in Gallo-Roman times and the village was mentioned as early as the year 889.
There is also on the riverbank of the Thouet an 11th Century Romanesque bridge and a Medieval Water Mill. One of the Compostella Pilgrim trails (the Way of St James) came through the village of Gourgé and across the Roman Bridge.
In the village you will find the bakery (la boulangerie) with many delicious pastries and breads, a local store and a café/restaurant. There are markets held almost every day in nearby villages offering fresh vegetables, meats, seafood and clothing.
The city of Parthenay is only a 15 mins drive away and here you will find many shopping outlets to cater for all your needs. The seaside village of La Rochelle is a 2 hour drive and the Loire Valley with it's fabulous wines, is a 1 hour drive. La Grande Tablée du Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley, is on every year in early August. A fabulous evening of French food, red wine of the region drunk from your own inscribed wine glass , great company plus entertainment provided by 3 live bands.
Other places of interest in the area:
Saint-Loup-Lamairé with it's beautiful Château, fabulous restaurant, river walk, historical Chemin de croix (stations of the cross) garden and Church.
Sanxay, in France's Poitou-Charentes region, is principally known for its Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre. Every summer in August, the age-old monument comes alive with the Soirées Lyriques des Sanxay - big budget operatic performances that make the most of the ruin's excellent acoustics.
Moncontour village is a gem hidden amongst a sea of sunflowers and melon fields. An attractive, historical village on the border of the Vienne and Deux Sèvres Departments. Watched over protectively by it’s 11th century donjon, Moncontour has a water sports lake, great fishing, beautiful forests and riverside walks that take you past the ancient lavoirs (wash houses found along the rivers edge).
L'église abbatiale Saint-Jouin at Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes. Dating back to the 6th Century. An amazing piece of architecture which overlooks the valley heading towards Moncontour.

Great place to relax and visit the surroudings, the Gîte is fully equipped and the garden very pleasant, with the river in the back. The owners are really, really welcoming and strive to help whenever possible. Overall a great place to be in, which is why we came back this year for the second year in a row !
Merci. It was our pleasure to have you stay with us once again! Our best wishes...

"Home away from home"
Our family of 4 had a wonderful stay in Gourgé. Donna and Peter were amazing hosts who went out of their way to make sure our young family were comfortable. It is a 2 level 2 bdr 2bath attached house with fully equipped kitchen, internet and satellite tv. The fireplace was exceptional on those chilly nights and the house was fully heated so there was never a cold night. There is a wonderful yard to relax and many places to find a quiet spot to read or throw a line in. There is a small restaurant in town - great for lunch and a small grocery store and boulangerie (open only some days of the week). Nearest big town was Parthenay which was a short drive (15mins) to get supplies (SuperU, E.Leclerc, Organic store and various clothing stores) and is an interesting place to visit in itself. Lots of historic sites to see in this area. Not many places to go by foot with the children but lots of farms to visit nearby and there's an aquatic centre in Parthenay. We could explore around the property and play games in the yard (basketball, table tennis, gardening) which always kept us busy. Everyone we met in the town was very friendly. Happy hours with a glass of rosé was always special.
It was a pleasure to have you stay with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Peter & Donna

"Great gite, perfect for our holiday!"
We had an excellent time at 'au pont' - Donna and Peter were exceptionally helpful, answering all our questions, pointing us to places to visit, and even arranging an extra bike so we could all have one to ride as a family. With the river and dinghy, table tennis, basketball and bikes, we had just the right mix of things to do, but also a relaxing garden and house to recuperate in, ready for everything that comes after our holiday! Thanks Donna and Peter!

"au pont is fantastic"
Had a magnificent few days at au pont. It's located in a lovely and peaceful village called Gourge and is the perfect place to get away from the rat-race and soak up some of rural France. The hosts, Peter and Donna, were really friendly and they have a clean, warm, and charming place. All in all I would highly recommend au pont to anybody wanting a great, relaxing holiday.

"Beautiful and peaceful surroundings, what more could you want?"
The hosts Donna and Peter are very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. The guest rooms are beautifully presented and comfortable. Staying at 'au pont' is like stepping back in time and the magnificent bridge, river and water wheel set the backdrop for a relaxing and peaceful afternoon of fishing or just simply enjoying the ambience with a glass of wine. We loved our stay at Gourge and beautiful historic towns of Parthenay and St Loup.

We could not have faulted our stay at Au Pont. We wanted to have a lovely relaxing week in the French countryside after an enjoyable and hectic week in Paris. We got it. Lovely weather, birds singing, glasses of wine with the wonderful hosts and French friends. What more could you want. Oh yes, lovely walks in the countryside and lots of wonderful medieval buildings. Did I mention our wonderful Hosts Donna and Peter Hein. All in all it was perfect. Thank you so much Donna and Peter you made our stay one we will not forget in the best possible way.

"The ideal base for a genuine 'French village' holiday"
Au Pont is a lovely gite in a great location. The accommodation itself is large and comfortable (our room had one of the best beds we've slept in). The gite has a beautiful garden right on the river - which we found ideal for a late afternoon aperitif - but there are other options such as fishing and kayaking for those who are more actively inclined. In the mornings my husband and I wandered up to the beautiful little village of Gourge (about 7 mins walk to the boulangerie) for fresh baguettes and croissants, and then we'd stop for a chat (employing our very basic French!) with the friendly locals fishing from ancient Roman stone bridge. We headed off exploring in a different direction each day (really having a car is a must in this region - there's a lot to see). Hosts Donna and Peter provided us with great ideas and information. Not to be missed is the beautiful village of Saint-Loup Lamaire (the village itself, the Chateau and the Stations of the Cross and Roman underground crypt nearby), St Jouin de Marnes Abbaye, Moncontour (especially the walk along the waterway here to see the old wash houses) and Parthenay (castle ruins and large supermarket for supplies). We love Paris but also wanted somewhere we could experience village life in France. Au Pont delivered in spades. Donna and Peter were friendly and welcoming and very willing to help when we needed advice but otherwise they left us in private to just enjoy...and we did. We'll definitely be back for more.

"Au Pont - The best and most relaxing gite holiday we have ever had!"
Au Pont had everything we will needed for the best gite holiday we have ever had. Peter and Donna made us feel welcome from the very first emails we exchanged and this continued when we arrived. We have never felt so at home on holiday and have already booked again for the same two weeks next year! The gite has everything you would possibly need, not that we spend much time inside as the weather was so good we had all our meals outside and spent all out lazy days in the garden, pool or down by the river fishing and boating with the amazing Roman bridge taking centre stage. There are plenty of places to cycle to so, either take your bike or borrow one of the four on offer at the gite. At the local reservoir there are bird hides to watch the bird life and down on the River Thouet three sets of stepping stones make a perfect place for a picnic. There was far too much to do within 2 hours drive to do it all in the fortnight we had. From the emotional village museum at Oradore-sur Glane to the medieval walled towns or Niort, Parthenay and Saumur, plus the with regions of the Loire and Bordeaux there really is something to suit every taste. The big find was Parc Aventure in Chantemerle where we spent two fantastic days climbing and zip wiring through the tree tops - a brilliant place for kids for 6 to 60!! Chateau de Breze with it's underground tunnels makes a really interesting diversion. Thank you Peter and Donna and we are looking forward to seeing you again in 2014.
We are very much looking forward to having you stay with us again in 2014! So glad we could be part of your "special birthday" celebrations... Next year we will have a new pool, new boat and hopefully new fish for you to catch! See you in August 2014. Cheers Pete & Donna

"Well equipped, roomy, and comfortable gite with great showers!"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at "Au Pont". While we were just one couple we had planned for another couple to join us and the accommodation would have been fine; two discrete bedrooms with their own en-suite bathrooms on the top floor and a very roomy, comfortable and well equipped dining, lounge and kitchen area on the ground floor. Donna provided a very nice meal on our first night and she and peter were very helpful on suggestions on where to go and what to see in the region. Peter and donna live on site which is helpful and we did not find them to be intrusive. Garden is lovely. We found plenty to go and see in the area, although the Loire valley is around 70km away there are lots of other interesting towns to check out. The local restaurant unfortunately had just closed but we found a couple of other good options in St Loup. Excellent value for us, a mature (ie ageing) couple even though we did not use the second bedroom. WiFi worked well which was fortunate as like much of rural franc the mobile service was not too good.
