The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
Area: 25 809 km2
Population: About 1 622 800
Climate: Oceanic tempered
Capital city: Poitiers
Departments: 16 - Charente (Angoulême), 17 - Charente-Maritime (La Rochelle), 79 - Deux-Sèvres (Niort), 86 - Vienne (Poitiers)
On the Atlantic coast, between the châteaux and the castles of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes, one of the sunniest parts of the French western coast. Its mild climate - 2,250 hours of sunshine per year - makes it desirable to visit anytime from early spring to late autumn. A 300 mile-long coastline with fine sandy beaches, backed by fragrant pine forests, lively resorts such as La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide attractions to tempt everyone from the beachcomber to the bathing-belle.
Inland, the scene is one of serenity, with vast horizons and wooded valleys, the Poitou fens and Marais Poitevin, the soothing tranquillity of canals, the valley of Vienne, the foothills of Charente and the Cognac vineyards.
(this information is from the website francekeys)
Gourgé is situated in the Deux Sèrves Department, Poitou-Charantes Region. It is one of the most historical and picturesque regions of France. It is well know for its cultured walking and cycling trails along the Thouet Valley, also for the fabulous goat's cheeses that are made in the district.
13 - 15th Century Châteaux are a common sight, and in the village of Gourgé is one of the oldest Churches in France, Saint-Hilaire, which was built on the old roman way linking Poitiers to Nantes. The site was first occupied in Gallo-Roman times and the village was mentioned as early as the year 889.
There is also on the riverbank of the Thouet an 11th Century Romanesque bridge and a Medieval Water Mill. One of the Compostella Pilgrim trails (the Way of St James) came through the village of Gourgé and across the Roman Bridge.
In the village you will find the bakery (la boulangerie) with many delicious pastries and breads, a local store and a café/restaurant. There are markets held almost every day in nearby villages offering fresh vegetables, meats, seafood and clothing.
The city of Parthenay is only a 15 mins drive away and here you will find many shopping outlets to cater for all your needs. The seaside village of La Rochelle is a 2 hour drive and the Loire Valley with it's fabulous wines, is a 1 hour drive. La Grande Tablée du Saumur-Champigny, Loire Valley, is on every year in early August. A fabulous evening of French food, red wine of the region drunk from your own inscribed wine glass , great company plus entertainment provided by 3 live bands.
Other places of interest in the area:
Saint-Loup-Lamairé with it's beautiful Château, fabulous restaurant, river walk, historical Chemin de croix (stations of the cross) garden and Church.
Sanxay, in France's Poitou-Charentes region, is principally known for its Gallo-Roman Amphitheatre. Every summer in August, the age-old monument comes alive with the Soirées Lyriques des Sanxay - big budget operatic performances that make the most of the ruin's excellent acoustics.
Moncontour village is a gem hidden amongst a sea of sunflowers and melon fields. An attractive, historical village on the border of the Vienne and Deux Sèvres Departments. Watched over protectively by it’s 11th century donjon, Moncontour has a water sports lake, great fishing, beautiful forests and riverside walks that take you past the ancient lavoirs (wash houses found along the rivers edge).
L'église abbatiale Saint-Jouin at Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes. Dating back to the 6th Century. An amazing piece of architecture which overlooks the valley heading towards Moncontour.

"Au Pont - The best and most relaxing gite holiday we have ever had!"
Au Pont had everything we will needed for the best gite holiday we have ever had. Peter and Donna made us feel welcome from the very first emails we exchanged and this continued when we arrived. We have never felt so at home on holiday and have already booked again for the same two weeks next year!
The gite has everything you would possibly need, not that we spend much time inside as the weather was so good we had all our meals outside and spent all out lazy days in the garden, pool or down by the river fishing and boating with the amazing Roman bridge taking centre stage. There are plenty of places to cycle to so, either take your bike or borrow one of the four on offer at the gite. At the local reservoir there are bird hides to watch the bird life and down on the River Thouet three sets of stepping stones make a perfect place for a picnic.
There was far too much to do within 2 hours drive to do it all in the fortnight we had. From the emotional village museum at Oradore-sur Glane to the medieval walled towns or Niort, Parthenay and Saumur, plus the with regions of the Loire and Bordeaux there really is something to suit every taste. The big find was Parc Aventure in Chantemerle where we spent two fantastic days climbing and zip wiring through the tree tops - a brilliant place for kids for 6 to 60!! Chateau de Breze with it's underground tunnels makes a really interesting diversion.
Thank you Peter and Donna and we are looking forward to seeing you again in 2014.
We are very much looking forward to having you stay with us again in 2014!
So glad we could be part of your "special birthday" celebrations... Next year we will have a new pool, new boat and hopefully new fish for you to catch! See you in August 2014. Cheers Pete & Donna

"Well equipped, roomy, and comfortable gite with great showers!"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at "Au Pont". While we were just one couple we had planned for another couple to join us and the accommodation would have been fine; two discrete bedrooms with their own en-suite bathrooms on the top floor and a very roomy, comfortable and well equipped dining, lounge and kitchen area on the ground floor. Donna provided a very nice meal on our first night and she and peter were very helpful on suggestions on where to go and what to see in the region. Peter and donna live on site which is helpful and we did not find them to be intrusive. Garden is lovely. We found plenty to go and see in the area, although the Loire valley is around 70km away there are lots of other interesting towns to check out. The local restaurant unfortunately had just closed but we found a couple of other good options in St Loup. Excellent value for us, a mature (ie ageing) couple even though we did not use the second bedroom. WiFi worked well which was fortunate as like much of rural franc the mobile service was not too good.

"Lovely haven in a cute French village"
Gite Du Pont is a lovely place to come and chill out and enjoy the French countryside. The property itself is immaculate, with all the comforts of home that you could want. Donna and Peter are excellent hosts, and they work very hard to make sure your every need is taken care of.
Enjoy walks, sitting by the river and enjoying the surrounding landscape and history.

"A charming and historic country retreat with friendly, helpful and gracious hosts."
Without Donna and Peter's knowledge of the local area, we would not have seen many of the interesting and historical attractions the region had to offer, all within one hour's drive from Au Pont.
A perfect place in which to recharge the batteries. Many great, inexpensive auberges (Inns), at which to dine eg. € 11. 50 for three courses including cheese, bread and wine. The local bakeries (Boulangeries) served a wide range of breads and pastries also at very reasonable prices.
Our only regret was not being able to stay for a second week.

"The Ozzy Experience in France"
Peter,Donna and Matt could not have been more welcoming. Friendly, helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They made me feel 'part of the family' for my two week stay. I was invited to a number of social functions with their friends in the immediate neighborhood.
The property was spotlessly clean and tidy with everything I needed for my stay. It was full of character and superbly furnished and converted to the highest standards with a huge lawn and garden stretching down to the river overlooking the Roman bridge. The location was an excellent base for visiting the Loire chateau's of Saumur, Breze and Chinon (in my case). Many many thanks to the Hein family for a memorable stay. Gud on yer mites!!!!

"Fab place, Fab village location, fab people"
Great property in lovely gardens and setting, River at bottom of garden was relaxing and had great fun on the boat, should have been relaxing but with the table tennis and basketball and boules spent a lot of time in competition mode.? bakers and shop only a 10 min stroll up the road which catered for most basic needs but plenty of markets and bigger shops in surrounding area. Nice resteraunt in village, great value lunchtime menu and great food served in evening, would suggest prior booking if arriving on Saturday as fully booked but Pathanay only a 10 min drive away and full of different types of resteraunts.
Great place for couples ,families or friends and hosts made us feel at home with warm welcome and great tips and advise.

"Not what we expected"
After reading all the reviews we were really looking to staying at "Au Pont". After a very long drive we arrived and were greeted by Donna and Peter , we were shown around the gite which was… More
Yes thank you, all our past 13 reviews have been very positive. As per your contract you were advised well in advance that you could leave the Gîte the way you found it (clean and tidy) or pay the 60 euros cleaning fee upon your departure, which is a normal practice for Gîtes. As you mentioned, this was the first time you stayed in a Gîte. The local village store is an 8 min walk and the larger supermarkets at Parthenay are a 15 min drive. Before we organised the village fête in our garden, you were asked well in advance if this was OK with the family, and your response was positive with the opportunity of getting to know some of the locals. At the end of every evening we tidy up the gardens and the garden furniture, putting the cushions away to ensure they are not wet the following day. The guest book is a guide on how to make your stay easier, in particular with the possibility of calcium build up over a longer period of time. If you remember, when you had difficulty finding places we physically took you there. What is surprising is that you did not mention any of this to us whilst you were here and you told us you were enjoying yourselves and had to leave because of a family emergency with your business partner. We even followed up with an email to ensure that everything was OK with you upon your return to the UK, and received no response or feedback then? This is "not what we expected" also. Regards Peter and Donna

"Great holiday retreat"
It was easy to find the Au Pont using SatNav. There was a welcome pack on our arrival - bread, cheese and wine. Instructions and guide about the house, local area, markets, etc., were available in the house too.
The gite is very nice & clean and well maintained with all the facilities one would need while on holiday – washing machine, satellite tv, wi-fi, microwave oven, toaster, fridge... Although advertised, there was no dishwasher. Once we settled in everything felt well organised and thought through. Downstairs area (living and dining rooms) is very spacious with plenty of space for 4-6 people without feeling on top of each other. The house stayed nice and cool even on hottest days.
Both bedrooms were comfortable, but we found memory foam mattresses a bit too hard for our liking. But other than that everything was clean and fresh.
The garden is huge with plenty of space to run around. There was a basketball court, table tennis and boules - all for us to use. Although advertised, gym was not available either. The pool (large size inflatable type) was regularly cleaned and treated. Not big enough to swim in, but we enjoyed playing and splashing - it was perfect for our 3.5 y.o. little boy.
Donna and Pete are genuinely nice and friendly people.
We would have no reservations recommending this place to others.

"Our relaxing Honeymoon in the French countryside."
After a hectic time in Paris, it was fantastic to relax at Au Pont! A great river front garden with magnificent views of an ancient Roman bride. Just a short walk (across the bridge!) to the village… More
Merci, this place is certainly designed to cater for all types of holidays. Relaxing down by the river in the warmth of the sun, reading, painting and/or fishing is one of them. We thoroughly enjoyed having you here whilst you were on your honeymoon. Cheers Peter and Donna
