2 miles from Parracombe, and 2½ miles from the little pebble beach at dramatic Heddon's Mouth, deep in a lush tranquil wooded valley, a 17th cent. farmhouse and two detached cottages which started life as grain and animal barns. All nestle in the shelter of mature trees and ancient hedgerows - full of wild flowers, birds and butterflies at the right time of year - and have lovely views to Trentishoe Down. There are 40 acres of pasture, streams, wild wood and moorland which you are welcome to explore. This is terrific walking country, far away from the hustle of modern urban life, and an ideal spot to enjoy its calm. Timeless green lane and woodland footpath (walking boots needed) to Hunters Inn, about 1½ miles. The farmhouse and cottages share use of a laundry room with washing machine and tumble drier and games barn (table tennis) opposite. Spring water. The Bothy: a private, single-storey cottage with French windows overlooking its little wild garden with stream. Approached by 80 yards of sloping path, there are 4 steps up to a glazed door to a large open-plan room with high beams, wood floor (rug), comfy sofa, TV/DVD, dining table/chairs, woodburner, imposing four-poster bed (5') and wall-hung tapestries; 2 steps up to little kitchen with combi-microwave and oven/ceramic hob, through to shower-room (suite). No children, except pre-crawling babies. A very romantic cottage.

The Devon region

Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).

Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.

Parracombe

Parracombe: tiny village (great pub, medieval church with famous Georgian interior, PO/shop, pottery) near Exmoor's dramatic coast in a valley midway between Lynton/Lynmouth, 8 miles, and Combe Martin, 6 miles. This is steep, dramatic, deep-valleyed, farming, wooded and moorland country: very beautiful. Wide sandy beaches at Woolacombe and Croyde, about 12 miles.
