The Aegean Islands region

The islands of Cyclades (pronounced Kyklades in Greek) get their name from the circular form that they engrave in the Aegean, surrounding the holy island of Delos.

Cyclades consist of 56 islands. Out of them, 24 are inhabited. Some are small and peaceful, despite others that are full of life and considered to be some of the most popular travel destinations throughout the world. However, all of them are beautiful and each one has its special, unique feature.

Everyone can find their own private paradise here in the beautiful Greek Islands.

Paros / Golden Beach area

Paros is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the Cyclades and due to this fact every summer it is full of life.

Its picturesque harbours, the traditional villages, the beautiful beaches and its intense nightlife make Paros one of the best choices for summer vacations. As a classic Cycladic island, Paros is full of white houses, which are surrounded by the red of the flowers, the green of the vines, the golden of its sandy beaches and the blue of its clear waters.

The capital and main port of the island is Paroikia. You should try a small walk through the streets of the old city with the white houses, the terraces and the churches. Make sure to visit the Medieval Castle as well as the church of Christ that is situated in it. At Paroikia there is also the Holy Temple of the Virgin Mary of Ekatontapyliani (or Katapoliani) that was built by Saints Eleni and Constantine.

At the north of the island is the fishing village of Naousa, the most famous place in Paros. Through to its white pavements that are surrounded by traditional houses and churches, you will go to the small harbour of Naousa. At its entry are ruins of the Castle that was built in the 15th century by Samaripas. The multicoloured small boats and the white houses make a unique landscape.

At the centre of Paros you will find the highest village of Paros, Lefkes. Its white houses, the churches and the pavements are combined harmonically with the eucalyptuses and the olive trees. There are the ancient quarries of marble from which was made the famous statues Venus of Milos and Hermis of Praxitelis. Marpisa and Dryos are two other villages of Paros, worthy to be visited.

PLACES OF INTEREST

The Medieval Castle, at the coastal hill, over the port of Paroikia.

The Holy Temple of Virgin Mary Ekatontapyliani, at Paroikia, that is said to have taken its name from the one hundred gates that it had. The church is built in traditional Cycladic style.

The house where Manto Mavroyenous, a Greek heroine, died, at Paroikia.

The carved places for the boats of ancient Paros, at the coastal Dryos.

The hundreds of white churches that are scattered everywhere in the island, shows the intense religious spirit of its residents

LOCAL EVENTS

The main feasts of the island are those of Ayioi Apostoloi on 29th of July in Naousa, of Metaporphosi tou Sotiros on 6th August at Marpisa, of Panayia Ekatontapyliani at Paroikia and Ayios Ioannis on 29th at Lefkes. There are also organized concerts and theatrical events.

Sport:
Windsurfing at Golden Beach (Hrysi Akti). The windsurfing world championship is organised there each year.
Swimming:
From Naousa, you can visit with a boat one of Greece's more well known beaches, Kolympithres. Light blue waters, sandy beach and enormous, embossed rocks in an incredible variety of forms. Famous is also the beach Hrysi Akti (Golden Beach), as well as Pounta Beach with its famous beach bars. Livadia, Santa Maria, Ayios Dimitrios, Parasporos, Ayia Erini, Ayios Fokas, Kaminia and Platia Ammos and other smaller beaches can offer you clear waters to swim in.

Fly Easyjet, British Airways or Olympic to Athens, there is the choice of flying to Paros from Athens airport or catch a ferry from either Piraeus, the main port in Athens (just 45 minutes from Athens International airport by metro train or 1 hour by the X96 bus service) or from Rafina direct to Paros.

Paros is located in the centre of the Cyclades, 90 nautical miles away from Piraeus Port. Usually, 1 out of 3 ferries that leave or return to Piraeus Port of Athens will stop in Paros. Depending on the type of ferry, the trip should take between 3 to 5 hours.

British Airways also fly to Mykonos until the end of October, which has a direct daily seaplane link to Paros.
http://www.airsealines.com/ as well as regular boats (2 hours). Easyjet have recently started several services a week from Gatwick to Mykonos and Santorini between May and early October.
