The road leads on to further beaches before terminating at the north tip of the island. The house looks out over a lagoon created by a small islet with tracesof a pre-Classical settlement connected to the beach by a sand isthmus. The house is 3 km from the exquisite fishing village of Naoussa which in summer throbs with nightlife varying from sophisticated harbour restaurants and bars to simple tavernas and cafes. The Aegean Islands region
The islands of the Cyclades are the tops of a submerged mountain range. Small and scattered they provide a constant backdrop wherever you look on a clear day. They are known for their benign summer climate with a fresh prevaling breeze as well as an occasional stiff wind, the Meltemi, which blows on summer afternoons in continuing brilliant sunshine, allowing Paros to host one leg of the annual World Windsurfing Championship.
The islands were the setting for an advanced Neolithic civilization, followed by Minoan, Mycenean, Archaic and Classical settllements and later occupations by Romans, Venetians and Ottomans.
Paros / Naoussa area
Paros was one of the most prosperous Greek islands in antiquity, due to its translucent marble (which made the Venus de Milo) and its harbours. It has a splendid early Byzantine church in Parikia as well as an icon museum and an archaeological museum with finds from the island. It is a classical blue and white rocky island with diverse and intimate sand beaches, pretty hill villages and ferry connections to Antiparos and Naxos as well as day excursions to Delos, Mykonos and Santorini.
Naoussa sits on a landlocked bay with a chapel-crowned island in the middle overlooked by the ruins of a Mycenean acropolis. Its tiny inner harbour is guarded by a ruined Venetian fort, and its narrow pedestrian alleways are now full of boutiques and jewellery shops. Across the bay is a watersports park, and at Santa Maria beach, 10 minutes from f rom the house, there is wind-surfing and a diiving school.
How to get there
EasyJet, BA and Olympic Airlines fly to Athens. A taxi or express bus takes you to Piraeus, the port of Athens, from where BlueStar Ferries (4 hours) and HiSpeed catamarans (3 hours) bring you to Paros. The small port of Rafina also has a ferry service to Paros.
Olympic has domestic flights from Athens to Paros but the small island plane is hard to book in summer.
Car hire is available from the port of Paroikia or from the village of Naoussa. The house is 3km from Naoussa.
