Buildings located outside the city center
Located a few kilometers from the historical center, where the city gives way to the campaigns of Parma, is the Cistercian Abbey of Valserena. Commonly and erroneously called The Charterhouse of Parma Stendhal inspired and is now the university's Research Center and Archive Communication. Its building started by Cardinal parmesan Gherando Bianchi in May 1298.
Close to the city, located near the northern ring road, lies another monastery, perhaps less well known but equally historical value: the Carthusian monastery, founded in 1285 by Rolando Taverna. It is a building full of works of art and fine workmanship architecture, in which the monks lived for 483 years, until 1805, when the Ducal Tobacco Factory in Parma settled there, now houses the School of Penitentiary Police instead.
And in Soragna "Rocca Meli Lupi", in Sala Baganza "Rocca San VItale" and "Torrechiara Castle" in Torrechiara very important for grotesque decoration.
Parma is one of the most important city of art in Italy. In the past is was residence of Farnese family and then residenca of Marie Louise of Austria (second wife of Napoleon). So it is full of historical buildings, with frescoes by Parmigianino and Correggio. And it is one of the capital of the opera as Verdi was born there and then guests can visit the Teatro Regio and the home of music. It 'also a city of the Food Valley so full of trattorias where you can eat Parma ham and Parmesan cheese. The surrounding area is full of small towns with castles and historic residences. In addition to 12 km (the Roccca Golf Club) is a golf course with 18 holes. Definitely worth a visit.
