About this location
The Ile-de-France region
Take a walk to Place du Châtelet, Tour Saint-Jacques, Place du Louvre, the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, Quai de la Mégisserie, La Samaritaine, Les Halles in the process of renovation, Fontaine des Innocents, Rue de la Ferronnerie, Tour Jean-Sans-Peur at 20 rue Etienne Marcel, the amazing Rue Montorgueil, the church of Saint-Eustache, Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, Quartier Saint-Merri, the Pompidou Centre and everything around it: restaurants, bars, etc.
The heart of Paris, like a mosaic, retains scattered remnants of these historic areas, splendid remnants, it must be said, that represent the best of an epoch. The Tour Saint-Jacques proudly bears elements of gothic architecture in an area designed according to the strict lines of Baron Haussmann. Les Halles boldly confront their postmodern architecture against the Renaissance façade of the church of Saint-Eustache. The modest back streets of the Sentier end along Rue Réaumur, the newspaper district in the 19th century and temple to eclectic architecture. The Pompidou Centre of contemporary art, with its millions of visitors is the star of the show and the Musée des Arts-et-Métiers is its erudite counterpart. The whole scene is set to music by the incessant rumble from the cosmopolitan crowd that criss-crosses the surrounding streets of the great sites discovering a secret garden here, aParisian passageway there, all bearing witness to the history of the city.
Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Quartier de la Madeleine. Les Grands Boulevards as far as Richelieu-Drouot. Quartier de l'Opéra. Le Palais de l'Elysée.
Saint-Honoré, Madeleine, Opéra...so many names that are so famous: these three quartiers that are spread over the 8th and 9th arrondissements account for most of the luxury brands that are associated all over the world with French luxury and chic. Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, beautiful 17th century and Second Empire mansion that now house government ministries, embassies, and the headquarters of big companies while the stately buildings of La Madeleine and the Opéra are full of busy offices. A walk around this area is a real pleasure, however. There are many shops, art galleries and antique shops to satisfy the most ardent window shoppers and dreamers. There are brasseries that are ideally located for watching the teeming life of the Grands Boulevards, plus theatres and cinemas. There are so many attractions in these three typically Parisian quartiers both for locals and tourists alike.
