Home description
River Ridge B&B is an authentic 1854 farmhouse. Alternatively to the property being run as a B&B we also have the option to rent the farmhouse as a housekeeping style rental (subject to availability) as either a 3 bedroom 2 bath, or 4 bedroom, 3 bath unit
Combined, our 3 suites have space to comfortably accommodate up to 12 people with maximum privacy. Privacy, luxury, convenience and charm are represented in each of our three units, The Pinery, The North Wing and The Master's Den.
Imagine being able to access all that is exciting and of interest in southern Ontario while retreating to a quiet, tranquil, rural setting when you are not in the mood for sight seeing. Each bedroom suite is appointed with special touches that encourage relaxation.
Outdoors, plan to enjoy the heated swimming pool, hot tub, bicycles, fish or walk down to the river...all without using your car. Otherwise, we are only 3 km from a premium level golf course.
The African Lion Safari is a 20 minute cross country drive from us. Niagara Falls is about 90 minutes, Toronto is 60 minute drive and St. Jacobs Mennonite Village is about 40 minutes. We are very central and unique!

The Ontario region
We are tucked into a very central part of southern Ontario. Due to our location in the river valley our climate is very variable, even within a day. Typically July is drier and hotter than August but truth be told there are very few dependable patterns in the weather over the last few years. Our area is rich in aboriginal history and points of interest related to that. We are within a reasonable day trip drive to a variety of more celebrated points of interest such as the cities of Toronto and Hamilton, the African Lion Safari, Niagara Falls, and the historic villages of St. Jacobs and Stratford. If you are an aboriginal history buff, plan to come when they are having a Pow Wow in the area. You'll be so glad that you did.
Paris, Ontario area
The town of Paris has been heralded as the prettiest town in Ontario and has a vibrant downtown with a variety of shops and restaurants. It is nestled at the junction of two rivers, the Nith River and the heritage designated Grand River. We are located on the west bank of the Grand River and are about 5 minute drive from the town of Paris. There are lots of opportunities for rafting, canoeing and kayaking, not to mention fishing on these rivers. Woman flock from all over to visit the large Mary Maxim shop only minutes from us. We are only 5 minutes to a small but well managed Pinehurst Conservation area that has a small beach and picnic sites. In the nearby towns there are more unique shopping opportunities like Smitty's, Robert Hall Originals to name a couple. There are also a vairety of festivals in Paris, nearby Cambridge, Brantford and Six Nations. There are many to choose from in the months of July and August. We are also located directly on a cycling route and are only minutes from and 18 hole golf course.
How to get there
We are 35-40 minutes from the Hamilton airport which we understand receives flights from the UK on Mondays at discount fares. Car hire companies offer booths right at the airport but this is a very competitive industry here. Posted rates are mostly for corporate and we have found that they are willing to negotiate from their posted rates. Plan to ask for a better rate...speak to the manager whenever possible. We are about 60-70 minutes from Pearson International airport. Please note that in summer months Ontario undergoes a lot of road construction which can result in delayed travel time due to restricted lane access. Affected routes are usually identified by the Ministry of Transportation.

Further details indoors: Looks can be deceiving. Almost everyone that comes here comments on how large the home is inside! The home has been furnished to be consistent with a farmhouse without feeling too rustic.
The large deck overlooks the Grand River Valley and horse paddocks, tress galore! The dining room is large bright and houses lots of interesting memorabilia from days gone by. It can be used for dining or playing cards or board games as desired (provided by hosts).
The large family room has a fireplace and an authenic wagon wheel table. The compact kitchen is fully stocked with dishwasher, utentsils, dishes, pots and pans, cutlery etc.and also has an authentic country feel.
There is a total of 5 televisions on site, so there will be less change to fight over what to watch. Laundry is available set times as negotiated at time of arrival.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'The Pinery'
This is an L-shaped, upper floor suite offering bedroom, attached, private sitting room, en suite bathroom with full tub and shower, all enhanced by the many windows permitting the opportunity to enjoy the scenic view of the 'Paris Plains'. There is a queen size pine cannonball bed, with a thick, pillow-top mattress surrounded by many pine furnishings in the main sleeping area of this unit.
The sitting room (with double pull out couch as required) could sleep another two people, but also offers additional comfort and ambience with fireplace for a couple on a romantic getaway. For that added touch, the fireplace can be controlled by the suite occupants to offer just flame, just additional heat for added coziness, or both. As with all our rooms, the room is air conditioned with guest control capacity, and has a small bar fridge. The colour television also has VCR/DVD capacity and receives individualized satellite programming.
The double occupancy rate for The Pinery is $99.00. For three people in this unit the rate increases to $114.00. For four people in this unit the rate would be $124.00, making it a very economical $31.00 per person. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
'The Master's Den'
This very large room is located on the main floor of the property, just inside the front door, so it has close proximity to both the entrance and the dining room. It is perfect for visitors with limited mobility or who will be needing to come and go often during their stay. This room can only accommodate 2 people but does have space for a cot if necessary.
This high-ceiling room with large windows offers a great view of our pool, hot tub and horse paddocks. It even has personal access from the room to the pool cabana that can be used to come and go with even more privacy.
This room is furnished with very unique pieces incorporating the use of imprinted tin combined with many functional antiques. There is a two person desk dating back to the original Toronto business school and rocker that Cathy's great grandmother used to rock her infant grandmother! The extreme comfort of the queen size bed leaves many to marvel how it could possibly be a murphy bed but when not not booked for guests seeking this superior comfort, we have the power to make this bed disappear...this bed has been written up in many magazines and ones just like it are owned for daily use by many famous people.
The bathroom is the most luxurious one on the property. It has a marble, double sink vanity with brass water pump style fixtures and a tub and shower in the bathing area. The toilet is housed separately in a water closet style to offer maximum space in the bathing area while creating privacy within the unit.
This room has television with satellite reception and DVD, fridge and will be equipped with a self-contained air conditioning unit. We are currently on a hunt for an electric insert that can go where the old coal burning encasement now fits in the fireplace mantel. (If any one can lead us to a Canadian source of something suitable we will give them a complimentary night's stay in the Master's Den!)
The double occupancy rate for The Master's Den is $89.00. The charge for an additional guest with the use of a cot would be $20.00. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
'The North Wing'
This is our largest suite and is located on the upper floor of our property. It has three luxuriously comfortable beds, two doubles and a queen, so in total can accommodate up to 6 people. We think it is perfect for families, women's groups or even fishermen to occupy for comfort, convenience and cost savings! It has been set up to offer both spaciousness and privacy, even from co- occupants of this wing!
The unit is arranged with two sleeping areas, a full bathroom (complete with tub and shower) and a kitchenette with small fridge, sink, toaster, coffee pot, kettle and even a microwave. We only ask that guests use our dining room to eat so as to keep spills in an area where they can be easily cleaned up. Cleanliness of the kitchenette, i.e. cleaning of any dishes used for snacks etc., during a stay is the responsibility of the guests who have used it.
The first sleeping area is very large and was formerly referred to as 'The Brass Hollow' to honour it's furnishing style. It houses the two double beds, a Victorian, velvet upholstered rocker for moments of quiet contemplation, as well as a velvet upholstered side chair. This area even boasts a corner fireplace. As with all our rooms, the room is air conditioned and has a colour television/VCR combination in the room.
The second sleeping area is actually referred to as 'The White Nook'. It is a quaint and cozy home for a queen size bed, tucked under the eaves. Nonetheless, it still offers it's inhabitants, all the amenities of it's River Ridge counterparts with television, fireplace, air conditioning and privacy too!
This suite can only be booked in its totality and the rate is based on a per person occupancy scale set up as follows:
# of occupants per person charge: 2 $54.50 3 $50.00 4 $40.00 5 $35.00 6 $30.00
These rates include accommodation and breakfast for the occupants.
Further details outdoors: In addition we have an old tire swing, croquet, lawn darts and volleyball as requested at time of booking.

Guestbook for River Ridge B&B
Our family spent 3 nights at the River Ridge B&B last Aug. We all agreed it was a great ,relaxing, scenic spot. Paris is my hometown, and it's still as pretty, if not more so than wnen I grew up there as a child. Cathy and Paul and their daughter made us feel right at home. The breakfasts were delicious and filling and presented so appealingly. Our hosts were always available to give advice on roads to take , sites close by etc. but never intrusive. Canada's Wonderland was a must see for our older teenage sons and the days journey was not overly long from River Ridge. The bedrooms were comfortable, and decorated in a warm and inviting style. We all agreed we'd stay there again and would recommend it highly! Nancy Montgomery - Martel
P.S. Our sons loved Pauls movie collection! ----------------------------------------------------------------- 'A wonderful country home in a picturesque setting. Comfortable cozy spacious accommodation and delicious breakfast. A friendly home that will be a place to come back to.
Barb and Rick, Burlington, Ontario -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you so much for making our "Girls Same Time Next Year Weekend" so special. It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you both and your B & B is wonderful. You have put a lot of thought into your decor and your food and its presentation.
