We are perfectly situated to explore this beautiful corner of France and we are equidistant between the vineyards of Bordeaux to the South and the Cognac vines to the North. Steeped in history and a "must" on everyone's agenda is Saint Emilion, a scenic 35 minutes South - while in the area visit the medieval castle of Chateau de Vayres at Libourne. Forty five minutes to the North, with its beautiful Saint Pierre Cathedral, is Angoulême and a little further on lies the "Venice of the Perigord" Brantôme. On the other side of Brantôme and about 1hr 15mins from us are the fascinating caves of Villars. An hour West is Blaye with its formidable citadel and ferry port to the Médoc region. Head East for an hour to visit Périgueux and admire the town's Roman remains and famous St Front Cathedral. Slightly South of Perigueux is Bergerac for a day of wine tasting and exploration. Whatever your chosen direction you are guaranteed to stumble upon an exciting bit of history...not too far from Maison Metcalf. It is the perfect place where the entire family or a big group of friends can come together for that special holiday or celebration.
We are situated in a rural setting, fulfilling that "let's get away from it all" desire, yet only a 3min drive to the nearest village, La Roche Chalais which has * a bank * a chemist * two doctors* a chiropractor * a physiotherapist * two supermarkets * a post office with hole-in-the-wall * a florist * a garage workshop * a car wash * a good restaurant & bar * bakeries and butcheries * a hairdresser * a beauty institute * a tourist office * a cinema * a weekly market. Five minutes in the opposite direction lies Parcoul, a sleepy village with a great tex-mex restaurant, a boulangerie, butchery, hairdresser and library with regular café lectures (in French only).
Wide, welcoming entrance hall with wc beneath the sweeping staircase
Superb farmhouse kitchen with handy island. It has everything required to cook up a storm for a crowd; a new Smeg cooker, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, enough pots and pans, numerous small appliances and gadgets to satisfy the fussiest of chefs
Dining room with a table that seats up to sixteen and a highchair
Lounge with ample space and comfy sofas. It has a TV/dvd, xbox, numerous books in English, French and Dutch, games, puzzles and a foosball table. The second wc is off the lounge
High ceilings, exposed beams, original fireplaces and an original quarry tiled floor add to the character of this lovely home.
Bedroom 1 with super king size bed (1.8 x 2m) and en-suite
Bedroom 2 with double bed and en-suite
Bedrooms 3 & 4, with their own entrance at the far end of the passage, share a bathroom
Bedrooms 5 & 6, with their own entrance at the near end of the passage and up a flight of stairs, share a bathroom (with separate bath).
An "apartment" like area within the house that is part of the house
The house is known to be a bit of a tardis. The apartment area is a large space within the house that has been quite popular with our younger guests. This large open plan area has a comfy lounge with dvd player, board games, puzzles and a children's pool table. A dining area with a table that seats six - also used as a creativity area by our smaller visitors, and a basic kitchen with a cooker, fridge/freezer, kettle and toaster. It is a large, additional space in the house that is ideal for those with little ones in a large group; breakfast can be served here and early risers entertained with no disturbance to the rest of your group. It is also a great, relaxed space for the mysterious species that is the "chilled teenager". Bedrooms 5 & 6 with shared bathroom are up the stairs and form part of this extended space.
Set in a one acre garden with lawned area, pool, orchard, veggie patch, goats and chickens, and a further three acres of open field, Maison Metcalf has all the outside space required in which to unwind and relax. Kids run free here while parents take in the country air. It is necessary to mention of the utmost importance to us is the security and safety of our visitors, in particular, our younger guests. Access from the garden to the parking area (and to the road) is through a latched garden gate (with lock). The garden is spacious with lots of room in which to run free, but it is fenced on both sides. The bottom of the garden is fenced and has a gate (with lock) to the lower field.
Pool: The large pool is fenced with a lockable security gate, and is for your sole enjoyment. It measures 10m x 5m with wide, Roman steps for easy access. The depth at the shallow end is just under a meter and the deep end is 1.4m. The surrounding patio has numerous sun loungers, deck chairs and umbrellas. An array of inflatable toys are available to provide many hours of fun in the pool. Pool towels are provided.
Games & Garden: Laid to flat lawn, the garden area is ideal to while away the hours on lazy days. Watch the children in the pool while making a start on the barbecue under the big cherry tree. The under-cover dining area just off the kitchen door makes dining al fresco easy. Alongside the orchard is the perfect spot for a friendly footie match or string up the badminton net between the trees and have a game.
Orchard and Veggie Patch: Our orchard further down the garden has over thirty fruit trees. Feast on bright red apples and cherries or juicy plums & pears in the Summer season. Find that perfect, quiet spot to read under one of the many trees. The veggie patch is a new project at Maison Metcalf and turned out a good crop in its first year. Cook a wonderful meal for your family with fresh produce pulled from the soil by your hand. Plump, stinky garlic, bulbous onions and ripe, red tomatoes etc. Yum! Our young guests thoroughly enjoy potato hunting and digging for onions; half the fun is getting to sink their toes into the soil. Once the "farming" is done they're off to feed goats Rosalie and William a few apples and pears from the orchard.
Lower field and beyond: And if all the above mentioned land is still not enough...we have more! Beyond the garden, the orchard and the lower lawn area is open field. Three acres of it; where the energetic and somewhat adventurous can run wild, climb the bales of hay, or try their hand at fishing in the small pond. You may spot Rosy wondering about or our friendly farmer's sheep and horses. Remember to check for eggs at the chicken coop when passing by.
Wherever you are at Maison Metcalf there is a special corner for everyone on the four acre grounds. We encourage you to explore the grounds and to find an area suited to you. Whatever you do we insist you have fun!
We look forward to welcoming you upon your arrival at Maison Metcalf and we will be discreetly available should you require any assistance during your stay with us.

The Dordogne region
On the cusp of the Dordogne with easy access to the Charente, Charente Maritime and the Gironde, Maison Metcalf is perfectly positioned to explore not only the Dordogne, but also its equally remarkable neighbouring regions. Bordeaux, Perigeux and Angoulême are all under an hour's drive and promises great day trips for the entire family. The nearest beach is at the hidden gem, Le Paradou leisure park, within walking distance from us! The seaside town of Royan is about an 80 minute drive. Famous Unesco world heritage village Saint Emilion is a scenic 35 minute drive. Just over an hour is the village of Villars with its famous prehistoric caves. Many churches and abbeys are scattered in the countryside around us. Whatever the direction, you are sure to discover the hidden treasures of the four regions - not too far from Maison Metcalf.
With so much to see and do around us you are guaranteed a fun-filled holiday!
Wine & Cognac:
The vineyards of Saint Emilion is 30min away. In June we celebrate the Early Harvest festival and in September it is time to lift a glass to the Late Harvest...a great time to visit us and join in the fun. If your preference is a crisp, white then head to the Entre-deux-mers region, 40min from us, or go a little further afield and explore the Medoc area - 90min of which 40min is a wonderful ferry ride across the estuary. We are equidistant between Bordeaux and Cognac; a visit to one of the many Cognac distilleries makes for a great day out.
A plethora of historical villages and churches scatter the countryside around us - many within a 15 minute radius. The romanesque church with its magnificent XII façade in St Privat-des-Prés, Feseltemp's fortified church with beautiful frescoes dating back to the Renaissance and St Aulaye, the only walled town in the Périgord. Definitely worth a visit is the subterranean church at Aubeterre, the medieval village of Saint Emilion, Vayeres castle at Libourne and the abbey at Echournac to name but a few of the sites under an hour's drive from us.
If its a more action packed holiday you are after we are sure you will not be bored. On our doorstep we have: kayaking/canoeing down the river Dronne, Tarzan swinging in the trees and archery at Saint Aulaye. Horse riding, fishing, cycling and hiking at La Roche Chalais. Golf at Aubeterre (we have the clubs!), and Le Paradou pleasure park just up the road from us has a tennis court, table tennis tables, trampolines, a kids play area with bouncy castles, go-karting, mini-golf, pedaloes on the lake, boules pitch and so much more to offer the young ones.
Markets & Shopping
Almost every small village in France has a weekly market and our nearest village, La Roche Chalais has its on a Saturday. Chalais a bit further on is every Monday and of course, Riberac 30min away has the largest market in the Perigord....well worth a visit! Those after the quintessential French memento or gift will find an array of pottery studios, art galleries and a lovely home ware boutique in Aubeterre. Designer shops with fabulous French labels line the cobbles streets of Libourne, 35 minutes from us, Angouleme and Bordeaux.
We have numerous wonderful restaurants around us. Le Bontemps in La Roche Chalais offers delicious, traditional French food. Talleyrand Chateau in Chalais has an exquisite menu and is said to equal any 5* Parisian restaurant. We even have a great tex-mex restaurant in Parcoul, the Pink Flamingo, that serves good Mexican dishes - and cocktails too!
