The South East Brazil region

Paraty, also spelled Parati, is a lovely colonial town, 125 miles from Rio de Janeiro on Ilha Grande Bay, Brazil's southeastern coast. It lies on the border between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states.

It's a favorite with Brazilians and visitors who want to get away from it all in an historic town, laze on one of the many beaches, and indulge in a restful vacation.

Its landscape is comprised by zeniths, valleys and slopes, which spread into the sea as sudden promontories or smooth hillsides. The waterfalls lead to jagged beaches or mangroves where a significant portion of sea life abounds. Over sixty islands make up a real garden. The mere contact with this small universe is enough to behold the wealth of its biodiversity, which comprises plant and animal species that dwell in holes deep in the sea and peaks that are nearly 2 thousand meters high. Sea environments, especially the estuary systems in Parati Bay, Saco do Mamanguá and Parati-Mirim, are natural breeding areas for countless sea species.

Nowadays, the Atlantic Forest is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the planet, and the Parati area was deemed extremely important for the preservation of flora, mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as climatic, hydrological and geomorphological factors that support these forms of life.

These attributes were a justification for the area involving the whole municipality of Parati to be deemed by Unesco's MAB program as an integral part of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve in 1992.

"Breathtaking. Paraty is already a paradise, so this must be its crown jewel."

Claire and her lovely daughter Bianca are the perfect hosts - they've lived abroad, they speak many languages and are as warm and welcoming as you'd imagine the friendliest of Brazilians to be.

The property is extensive: virgin rainforest as far as the eye can see in every direction, your own private waterfall, an infinity pool that looks out over the mountains that descend towards the ocean, a truly unique octagon-shaped house with it's giant loft/atrium, barbecue and outdoor pizza oven, complete with modern comforts: wi-fi internet, a hard line telephone, a few TVs, many bathrooms, a warm shower and an excellent kitchen.

It really is a refuge - you must drive 20-30 minutes up the mountain from Paraty (there's a cheap van for R$3 every hour or so) and the last 5 minutes of road are truly steep and difficult. Easy in a 4x4, but I've definitely seen it done in a small Fiat - gotta love that Brazilian driving confidence and skill.

It's the perfect home base from which to explore all of Paraty, but it can also be a true destination unto itself - what started as a 4 day trip for us, quickly became 9 days. It's quite easy to lose track of time up there in Avalonia. We had grand outdoor lunches and dinners on that lovely mosaic table with its large candalabra in the atrium, spend hours lounging on the beds and in the hammocks, reading and watching the weather roll in and out and spent entire days in the wonderful pool, splashing about and getting some sun.

Put together a few friends, and all of a sudden, for the same price as a regular, boring hotel, you'll have an entire unique property and house to yourselves - a truly incredible experience!
