The sitting room enjoys views over the garden and onto the fields beyond. A Library of videos is available for the winter evenings. The kitchen/dining room has a dining table to seat six. The West Country / Cornwall region

Cornwall is surrounded by beaches and cliffs, all joined one to the next by lovelly coastal & cliff pathways. We're situated not far from some of the most impressive cliff pathways in Cornwall.

Fowey:
Fowey is just 3miles from Hammermill by car. Or you can walk the cliff path stopping off for a drink at the pub in Polkerris. After that carry on and you come to the Daymark on Gribbin Head this is a point to help shiping along the coast line, on down into the bay at polridmouth with the boat house on the shore was inspiration to Daphne Du-Maurier in her book Rebecca. Moving on to Fowey the next cove is Readymoney cove, this being on the estuary to the Fowey river. You have now walked one of the best parts of our coast path, and arrived in Fowey. In the southwest we are surrounded by old working ports, some fishing ports, others like Fowey, are a little bit bigger and handle a slightly wider variety of shipping. The river Fowey has a beautiful estuary, coupled with the village of Polruan across the river, makes for an interesting and relaxing day out. Why not hire a small boat and take a look at Daphne Du-Maurier's house on the river. Then go on up river past the docks and on to Golant for a drink in the Fishermans. The Daphne du Maurier Festival will take place in the early spring. With plays and all kinds of things of interest going on in the area. In summer there is a ferry from Fowey to Mevagissey.

Mevagissey
Mevagissey is a village and fishing port situated six miles south of St Austell and just 9 miles from Hammermill.
It is a working fishing village with narrow streets leading to a quaint harbour from which you can take a boat trip around St. Austell bay. Just up the road from Mevagissey is Heligan Gardens.

Heligen Gardens
Heligen is a old country estate that went into disrepair at he time of the war, as many of it workers had to go to fight. Now the formal Gardens and surounding wood and parkland has been restored to its former glory. Tim Smit took up the challenge to carry out the running of the work. After which he made his dream of the Eden Project a realty.

Eden Project
The Eden Project is just 3 miles from Hammermill and well worth a visit. I could not start to tell of the wonder of Eden, It has to be seen.

Par area

We have a beautiful rural setting near the beach, and there is plenty more to do in the area as well. The Eden project is a short ten minute drive away - being dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World it is well worth the trip. Fast track tickets are available in the village.

Lanhydrock House and Garden are a mere 10 minutes away and the literary port of Fowey and the coastline towards Par are about 5 minutes away. There are also several superb gardens within a short distance: Marsh Villa, Pine Lodge, Tregrehan and the Lost Garden of Heligon, to name just a few.

The Tall Ship Company is based In Charlestown, this picturesque old port plays host to tall ships, some of which are resident in the port. Step back in time as you make your way down onto the harbour and have a look around these old giants of the sea.

Dear John

Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our week in Cornwall. Your warm welcome, together with the information pack and pen was a great start, (not to mention the cream tea), and to cap it off you had organised good weather for us too. We thought the cottage, which was very comfortable, was in such an ideal position for sightseeing being within easy reach of many interesting places plus, of course, the beautiful coastline. We had some great walks which we and Barney enjoyed very much. However to finish off a busy day relaxing in the summerhouse was just great. Our dog Barney was in his element being able to wander about and both he and we just fell in love with Molly.

Thank you for your hospitality and I am sure we will be back.

With best wishes

Stan and Janet (and Barney)

Guestbook for Hammermill House

HAMMERMILL HOUSE---THE POEM

When we arrived we were greeted by the pets

And ever since we’ve been glad we met!

The Summerhouse was lovely on a hot summers day

And even when it was raining you can hide away

The traditional Cornish pasties always delicious

With the fillings they were always capricious

The local Royal pub was welcoming and warm

The food was fantastic and always on form

With the big bio domes and a high wire ride

It was warm hot and humid and raining inside

The weeks gone so quickly shame it can’t last

The best times always seem to go in a flash

When we arrived at Hammerhill house after a very long drive from Germany over to Cornwall we had a very warm welcome by John. We had Scones, clotted cream, marmalade and fresh flowers on the kitchen table and it was a brilliant start for our holiday. The house has a lot of space, is very charming, well equipped and is a perfect location to start all the trips to the marvellous Cornish countryside and the “must have seen” places.
The brand new sundeck is perfect for breakfast outside and even when it rains perfect for cream teas inside the summer house. John gave us lots of help and hints and our dog Olmo also got new dog friends. Thank you very much indeed for the wonderful time and see you next time in Cornwall…

best regards

Olmo, Bea and Michael

Dear John,

we came as foreigner, gone as friends. Thanks a lot for making our holidays such a success.

Hammermill House is much more than ever we could expect. Now we know and could see that you did an excellent job when making Hammermill House as a comfortable place as it is right now (house, sundeck, internet access, every thing worked perfect).

Every advice from you was much more than helpful. Cornwall with Eden Project, Lands End, Mineack Theatre, Tintagel, Truro and Fowey, and not to forget Falmouth with it Tall Ships event are places must seen. But also the next surrounding area to do a walk or jogging is perfect.

What more can we say, than “A big, big thank you for a lovely stay”.

Petra and Achim from Willich, Germany

kind regards and again thank you for our holiday

Petra and Achim

We visited Hammermill in July 2009 finding it on www.holidaylettings.co.uk and not really knowing what to expect we were a bit apprehensive, we have experienced some poor accommodation in the past and it's always a gamble trying somewhere new, even though I had spoken to the owner (John) a couple of times before the holiday and found him to be very accommodating and helpful, it's still a worry. John even went out of his way to help us find alternative accommodation for some friends who wanted to join us for one of the weeks.
We found Hammermill house to be a warm, welcoming and very homely place, and after the long drive the Cornish cream tea waiting for us in the cottage was a real treat.
Hammermill House is well placed for visiting all the major attractions that Cornwall has to offer. While there we visited places all over Cornwall from Bude in the North to Lands End and Falmouth in the West and South.
The accommodation is spacious and comfortable, and use of the computer and free internet made it possible for us to check the weather feed daily and avoid most of the rain in what, weather-wise, was a poor first week. There is a delightful summerhouse with barbecue on a deck in the garden, and there are beach toys, beach shelter and wind breaks in the summerhouse which John kindly allowed us to take to the beach.
Our dog Freddie has made a new friend in Molly, the resident Collie, he enjoyed playing in the garden and recommends the place to all dogs, he says the 15minute walk from Hammermill to Par sands is nice around the duck pond. Most of the beaches, pubs and a lot of the shops all over Cornwall are dog friendly to which he is very grateful.

We leave feeling that we have not only found a wonderful holiday cottage, but that we have made new friends in John, Molly and his cats. We will definitely be returning in the future.
John - Thanks for making ours stay enjoyable. You couldn't have been a better host!
Ian, Maria, Madeleine, Rhianna and Freddie.
