The Paphos District
Paphos, the capital of western Cyprus, has some serious historical clout. Site of the vast fourth-century BC Tombs of the Kings, set high on a cliff above the sparkling sea, as well as a dramatic Byzantine castle and fine mosaics, it's also known as the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite. The population of 27,000 is swelled by a summer influx of beach-bound English, German and Scandinavian visitors. A beautiful old harbor awaits, while modern hotels and restaurants stretch along the promenade.
Paphos / Coral Bay area
Coral Bay is a small town about 15 minutes drive from Paphos in southwest Cyprus. Until the boom of the tourist industry hit Cyprus, Coral Bay was just that – a bay. It is now home to several hotels overlooking the best sandy beeches on the island with bustling cafes and restaurants. Dive Sites
Apart from shopping, or the beach, the major attraction of Coral Bay is its diving treasures. The dive companies in the town offer courses for beginners so even if you have never tried this, you are not excluded. The following are some of the diving sites of Coral Bay:
Maninji Island: Between 8 and 20m deep this is regarded as the most scenic dive on the coast with cliffs, caves coral and "swim throughs".
Akamas Peninsula: In the summer this site is frequented by turtles, which makes it extremely popular.
Wreck of the Zenobia: This is the fourth larges wreck dive in the world; it is usually a day trip, for experienced divers only.
Restaurants El Faro Restaurant - The menu here has something for everyone, with pasta, pizza and an assortment of good Cypriot cuisine. The value is really good and the staff friendly.
Tratoria La Vigna - Imagine sitting under a summer moon with palm trees accompanied by the sounds of fountains and gentle music wafting on the warm evening air and you will get a small idea of what this place is like. The menu is varied and the food and staff are great.
Seriani Restaurant - Coral Star Shopping Centre: This place is usually packed with people – a good sign for a restaurant, so book if you can. The food is not expensive and the service is friendly.
Bars & Clubs Kleos - A highly recommended cocktail bar. The music is good and the staff is friendly leading to an overall great atmosphere.
Blazing Saddles - An excellent choice for afternoon cocktails or drinks with this outside location. With plenty of free samples it is no wonder this place is popular.
Millenium Pub - Probably the most highly rated nightspot in town, this place serves amazing cocktails, they have karaoke evenings and they stay open as long as you want. This is also a good place to watch any major sporting event, which they screen.
Beaches Excellent, wide sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels and restaurants surround Coral Bay. If you prefer a quieter beach experience you can make your way to Cape Lara, which is the nesting site for Green and Loggerhead turtles. As mentioned above diving is a key attraction of the coast at Coral Bay
