The Paphos District

Paphos - the ancient capital of Cyprus - boasts a rich cultural background and natural environment and is a very popular place for holidaymakers. Its shops and restaurants overlook the crystal clear waters towards the historic Harbour with its fishing and pleasure boats. Overlooking the Harbour is the famous Roman Fort, Byzantine Castle and House of Dionysos with its archaeological finds, including mosaics and amphitheatre.
The Harbour’s tavernas, open-air cafes, and bars makes it an ideal place to relax in the warm sunshine. The 'Tombs of the Kings' with its subterranean burial chambers is a mere 10 mins drive from the apartment.

Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark: With the largest number of facilities and attractions in Cyprus, the biggest family rafting ride in Europe and virtually guaranteed sunshine for every one of its opening days, it's no wonder that it attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. Young or old, swimmer or not, there's something here for everyone – a refreshing and cool way to spend a hot day!

Paphos market is located in the old town area of Paphos .Buses regularly run from all areas of Paphos to the market .The market is held everyday and is full of new and traditional stalls selling everything from fruit , vegetables and fish to leather shoes and handbags. You will also find cafes and tavernas in which to refresh after a long mornings shopping or discover the narrow streets and alleyways of the old town.

Akamas: The Akamas peninsula is situated to the north west of Paphos and is a unique reserve with outstanding varied vegetation, wildlife, landscapes and coasts. The number of plant species found here are up to 600, there are also 168 species of bird, 20 reptiles and butterfly species and 12 mammals. In mid-summer, the Turtles come ashore at Lara Bay to lay eggs and hatch their young. The Akamas Gorge is an attractive and peaceful walk for those wishing to get back to nature.

Tombs of the Kings: The Tombs of the Kings is spread over a vast area containing impressive underground tombs that date back to the 4th century BC. The Tombs are carved out of solid rock, some with Doric pillars. Although being tombs of high officials rather than Kings, it was named Tombs of the Kings for the magnificence of the tombs.

Paphos Mosaics: One of the most historic sites on the island are the Mosaics of Paphos, located near the harbour in Kato Paphos. This world class site is considered to have the finest mosaics in the Eastern Mediterranean. They mainly show scenes from Greek mythology, dating from the 2nd to the 5th century AD, and are still in excellent condition.

Paphos Castle: Paphos Castle was originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect its famous picturesque harbour. Since 1935 it has been declared an ancient monument and is now considered as one of the hallmarks of the Paphos region. Just in front of the Castle, on the square, many cultural events take place, and during September each year the Paphos Aphrodite Festival takes place, which presents a different opera each year by famous artists who use the building as scenery.

Adonis Baths: Adonis baths, at a two level waterfall, is where Adonis the lover of Aphrodite used to bathe, according to Greek mythology. Here you will have the opportunity of swimming and swinging from a rope into the refreshing mountain waters.

Aphrodite’s Rock: On the south coast of the island lies “Petra tou Romiou” as it’s known in Cyprus, the location where Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love, was said to have emerged from the sea. Aphrodite’s Rock is a massive chunk of stone that marks the spot and her birthplace was a place of pilgrimage for the entire Hellenic world.

Paphos / Kissonerga area

Kissonerga village is situated between Paphos and Coral Bay,about 7km from Paphos and a 5 minute walk uphill through the narrow streets from the apartment. There is a bus-stop just 3-4 minutes walk away, which takes you to Paphos town centre, or Coral Bay in the other direction. There are groves of bananas, oranges, lemons etc providing shady lanes for a relaxing stroll.

On the coastal road are several hotels, mini-markets, several bars and taverns, as well as plenty of shops aimed at tourists. The nearest beach, Vardas Beach, offers free sunloungers on a grassy area to its customers. The attractive Sunday Beach is a few minutes in the direction of Paphos, while the larger main Coral Bay beach is 10 minutes going west. Here you have cafes, restaurants, nightclubs, pedalos and sun-loungers/parasols to rent.

Off the coast road, and into Kissonerga village you will find the main street with a few restaurants, several mini-markets, a bank, two coffee shops (one of which also operates as a sub post office), a bookshop, florist, and chemist.

Guestbook

Just writing to let you know we had a fantastic time at your apartment. The apartment was very spacious for the five of us and everything was lovely, clean and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the swimming pool and felt it was our own private pool as we were the only people to use it. We look forward to booking with you again next year and recommending it to our family and friends. Thanks again for making our holiday memorable.

Karen Fleming

We have enjoyed our ten days holiday in Kissonerga very much. The location of the apartment is fantastic as it is only a small drive away from the beautiful Coral Beach and only a stroll down to the rocky beach Vardas. There the kids enjoyed in a safe environment looking for crabs and small fish, while we were able to enjoy small refreshments in the 'cafe'. The apartment worked fantastically in view of having the spacial separation in the evening. The kids were able to watch a DVD or go into their room to play, while we were having a tasty bottle of local wine on the balcony watching the fantastic sunset. The pool was a highlight after a day on the beach and it was perfect for chilling out in the early evening, getting a beautiful breeze. Thank you for a relaxing holiday.
