The Paphos District

The city of Pafos, still usually written as Paphos, on the southwest coast of the island, is, according to legend the birthplace of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. It became the capital of the island replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic Period as its masters, the Ptolemy's, favored a location closer to their capital, Alexandria.

Paphos consists of two areas: the coastal resort area (Kato Paphos) and the town itself (Pano Paphos) which is slightly inland. Paphos is very popular with tourists. Among its attractions are its ancient mosaic floors, its beautiful old harbor, its modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the seaside promenade. Other sights include an archeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul's Pillar and the Temple of Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).

The city and district of Pafos (Paphos) had remained the most underdeveloped part of the island until 1974.
The Turkish invasion and occupation of the major tourist resorts of Keryneia and Ammochostos led to major investments by the government and the private sector in the district of Pafos (Paphos). There was rapid economic activity in all fields but especially tourism and the district's population stopped shrinking and indeed showed some signs of increasing. Today Pafos (Paphos) is a popular sea resort with a population of 39.500

Paphos / Coral Bay area

Coral Bay is popular with both local Cypriot families and British holidaymakers alike. The European Blue Flag awarded beach of Coral Bay is a 600 metre crescent of soft white sand which is blessed with crystal clear, clean waters. The popular beach offers sports such as parasailing, snorkelling, diving, sailing and sports fishing.

The night life of Coral Bay is always bursting with energy and there is so much to do in the popular town. There is a great variety of restaurants to choose from, including local Greek taverns, to Italian, Chinese, and many other international restaurants. There are many pubs and bars for your enjoyment from, Irish pubs, sports bars, music bars. Also there are wonderful local wineries to visit where you can try a drop of the local nectar.

One can enjoy mini - golf, hire a bicycle, play tennis, horse riding, go - carting and hiking. For those who love to shop, there a variety of shopping experiences from clothes, handbags, jewellery, souvenirs just to name a few of the goodies.

The two most popular historical sights is firstly the Wreck of Vera K and the Peyia Verisi (Fountain). The Wreck of Vera K is a Lebanese Freighter which grounded in shallow water. Sine then it has been used for targeting practice by the Cypriote Military. In 1974 the ship was declared a hazard to other ships and was blown up. Beside the wreck this dive site offers a unique and colourful archway. Peyia Vrisi, is a fountain found in the middle of the village of Peyia. This fountain was the only source of water for the whole village many years ago. It is a simple sight yet has powerful historical value.
